Very interesting preview, well written I would say and a very intuitive perspective.

I only read a few paragraphs, but it seems to be a very accurate portrayal of the game. In other words, he must have played more than enough to say all that (roughly speaking, atleast 40 hours and up if not even 100+...)

Nice review, finally someone without  a mention of WoW in their review!

  • GylfiGylfi Member UncommonPosts: 708

Wow, after this preview I really start to see why ppl are criticizing the game, and a friend of mine in beta says there's just nothing to do but shoot damn mob.

Ive been awating this game for 2 years, I can't believe it's really just about shooting damn things.

It's awful, please someone tell me it's not like that, help !

As I said a pal of mine in MSN tells me everything... He's disappointed of the boring "collect a number of" type of quests we hated in WoW, and the fact that there's not much to do but shoot and shoot brainlessly.

Someone please tell me it's not true. I've been praising and defending this game forever... what i liked the most are the ethical parables but i heard they're rare and they don't have a real impact on the overall game.

No ethical consequences to your character's personality and abilities, á la "the gypsy questions" of the Ultima saga...

Well one thing you have to remember is that not all of the missions and parables quest are going to be in the beta right now. A lot of times they'll do a character wipe on each server and you have to start all over again. But open beta should be better as for as questing goes I'm sure, I'm still waiting for a beta key myself but I think by the time open beta hits most of the questing system will be in place. I'm sure the dev's don't want the testers to run throw to much of the quests, there has to be some surprises in the retail game version.

Let's see.  You carry a gun.  There are creatures to kill.

    That pretty much is it.

You are at a loss.  Sorry you waited for 2 years to figure that out.

Tabula Rasa is a fast-paced, combat-focused, shootereque, sci-fi MMORPG. I say "shooteresque" because, firstly, I like making up words. Secondly, it's not a "first person shooter", as you shoot from a third person perspective, so the term "FPS" is not applicable and will only inspire a 5 minute long semantical discussion in global chat, should you foolishly choose to apply it there. Thirdly, I use the term because it's possible to nitpick your way into the position that it's not really a true "shooter", in that your shots are not all absolutely traced in real time to physical hit locations, as they could be in a much smaller MP shooter game consisting of 16 players or so. This is something that would clearly be impossible for purely technical reasons in a game consisting of hundreds, or thousands, of players on a server. Instead, TR assembles a clever array of game mechanics and illusion that captures the essence of the shooting experience in the game better than any other MMO I've played. It just sort of works.

Finally, someone who gets it.  I'm sick of all the FPS comparisons.

EDIT: So basically it's SWG combat?

You can take the basic premise of SWG combat and apply it to TR, but, and I strees the but there,  TR takes it to a whole new level that SWG could only wish to achieve. As the article says the developers chose to make it a fun game first and an MMO second.

You guys tend to forget that the term FPS is used for its meaning of action shooter, not for type of interface... after all, that's just camera position, while FPS  used NOT as acronym but as a genre implying not the camera view (who cares about it) but simply A LOT OF ACTION, fits very well TR, from this point of view.  Yeah right like most of you peeps would understand this concept.

It's just like the usage of the term RPG. People define many horrid games (like Oblivion) as RPG, tho there's no roleplaying in them whatsoever.

Btw I like action, but as long as it's intelligent. Ok TR is surely loaded with action, but i hope it has depth, that it's not JUST shooting and killing, like any console-boy retard would do.

Who knows, tho, maybe if the game miserably fails, they'll take it off to radically change it, and make it turned based like Fallout. Now that would rock

Maybe some people use the term in an uninformed way, but I don't see how that changes the term's meaning. For a game to be a First Person Shooter, it *has to* provide a first person view mode. If you see your character on screen, we have another term for that: Third Person Shooter.

  • GylfiGylfi Member UncommonPosts: 708

and who said that's not true ?

but sometimes when people said so TR is FPS they probably meant most of all that there's a lot of shooting time in it, not implying that the stupid camera is behind the character's butt, which btw is a big who cares, let's talk about the damn gameplay mechanisms

I think its the minimalist U.I and faster pace with guns that make people think its a FPS.

To me a FPS has not only a first person view, but is twitch based. Both of those are missing from T.R which is RPG calculation based. Your skill at aiming wont determine a hit, but can affect the damage you do.

Exactly and it's just in those elements that people name FPS, in the fast pacing, not the camera which is the last thing.

And also they're wondering about the twitch or skill based mechanism.

Isn't that A LOT more important than where is the bloody cam positioned ?

    Anyways...

People are saying that since the game seems to be all about shooting, that's that, it's all you do. Personally I don't think so, even if it's a mmo packed with action doesn't mean you're not gonna use the brain. O'course I would have preferred a game based on politics, diplomacy, negotiation, discussions and all that's ethics, but who knows, there might be some of that between all the shooting.

Ehm so the shooting bit is kinda clear now... Well what about the story the lore and the MMORPG bits ? I have only seen the logo-language so far and that got me pretty interested... anything else?

  • okrosokros Member Posts: 3

Don't be so critical towards the game, it's actually pretty good.

Yes, there is a lot of shooting

It is on the other hand, very much like an fps.

The game has a lot of great features i can not get into, but it will definatly be fun to play once they add some more quests.

They have a very nice combat system that is worth looking forward to ;-)

Decent little preview.  No mention of classes or class trees but I'm guessing that is still NDA.

well the lore is that the Eloh were a super advanced race that discovered logos and travelled around the universe uplifting other races and teaching them logos etc.

Then one day one of those uplifted races (thrax) turned on them and tried to destroy them. After winning that war the Eloh split into two factions over what they should do - The Eloh wanted to continue uplifting races, and the other faction the Bane wanted to suppress any race that could be a threat.

After a civil war the Bane won, the Eloh were all but eliminated. The Bane now travel around wiping out any race that could be a threat.

So this is what happened on Earth. We are the survivors (rescued somehow) and now members of the AFS. So we are Foreas and Arieki helping the native races on those planets to defeat the Bane.

You play as a logos receptive human survivor.

There are different human and alien factions. So some want our help, some dont. The Bane use their subjugated races (Thrax) as shock troops.
