I don't think you can really catch up with the veterans concerning the amount of skillpoints. But there are so many skills that take so long to train that it would take many years for a character to train all skills to lvl5. So most probably you'll want to specialize your character. For example if you want to make your character a fighter you'll have a much more limited number of skills to train (spaceship, gunnery, electronics, engineering skills and some more).

It's a good system imo, I don't think you should be able to catch up that easily. The veterans had to invest a lot of time to get their skills where they are now and so will you.

This is where you fail to realize something. Just because you're a veteran player and have been playing for more than a year and have tons of skillpoints, it doesn't mean that people who have only been playing a month or so have no chance of beating you. Sure, you may have higher level this and higher level that but if your equipment is wrong, you WILL lose. This game isn't based on playing more = better character. It's based on knowing what skills to train and what modules and weapons to equip. That's why there's no such thing as power-leveling and that's why when people play this game they don't get bored for months and months. In this game you won't be creating a new character cuz 'you're bored of playing your character', and there's always skills to train.

In summary, if you like to powerlevel just so you can say you're l33t or better than everyone else and have a superiority complex, go away. We don't want you ruining our good game. Go play Everquest where that actually means something. But if you wish to play a deep immersive game with an excellent community and actual TEAMWORK instead of 'hey let's team up together and go kill monsters together', this is the game for you.

80 days for heavy drones? Here is s helpfull hint to help you speed up your learning. Train 5 of the 6 learning skills up to level 4 first before you start anything else. I know it is boring and you wont get to use anything new for a while, but you will thank me in the end. Dont worry about the learning skill that boosts your charisma. When I trained Learning from level 3 to level 4 it shaved 2 days off of learning drone 5.

lol, i have 10million sp. does that mean a 2 month old character can be ganked easily by me? nope. millions of them are in industry skills, useless in combat. millions moe in skills unrelated to combat in battleships. any 2 month old character with some focused training and a scorpion could probably rock my megathron with the proper in-game skill at combat, which is whats more important, actual ability :).

The time it takes to train skills increases exponentially. That means the time it takes to train from level 1-4 is the same amount of time it takes to train from 4-5.

Also, the bonus from skills is merely linear. That means that the bonous from training level 0-1 is the SAME as the bonus from training level 4-5 mmmkay? kthxbye

I just started yesterday and I already have a new frigate and over 450,000 Isk.

I did play this game when it was BETA, and it's changed a lot.  I like the skill system... while you're waiting for only a few hours [for the first few skills], you should mine or do agent missions.

I did this one mission, took the package and opened it...  I sold the materials inside and made 400k Isk.  I'm going to be a trader type player... so having an uber battleship isn't going to be my main goal.

As long as I don't die if pirates attack me and I can get away safely... that's all that matters, doesn't it?

Got to agree with some of the people here as Eve skill training works well lvl 5 is alot of time invested for 5% more of something and as a rule lvl 5 takes as long if not more then lvl1-4 put together. Eve was my first MMORPG ever and ive been here since Sept last year.

I know people who have been playing for a month or less are still loving the game even with 1/10th or less of the skill points of the guys here from the start, its now alot easyier to be a noob in eve than it was when i started playing (IMHO).  Just give the 14 day trail a blast see what u think im addicted.

I can remember in BETA when you started to dock with a station you hit the ESC then ESC again and it would dock you...

So many exploits have been fixed.  It is a good game.  I've always liked sci-fi better...  it's just my cup of tea.

Plus the music... it's... creepy.  I love it.

I came to Eve when Earth & Beyond announced it's closing.I had a beta acct during the 2 or 3rd phase of beta testing, it was way to buggy & server was always down when I had time etc...

all i know is now i am kicking myself for not sticking with it, it is everything E&B was and way more. and there is no way to ever "catch up" with the vet's but a few properly trained skills and some pvp xp and you'll be able to hang with the Vet's .you loose a few ships along the way but after a bit you can  survive  fleet battles and smaller fights ,i have and i'm having a blast doin it.

Maybe you can't catch up old player in general , but if you specialize yourself you CAN catch up veteran players...If you want to train an "allround-character" you will never have the chance to catch up and that is OK...e.g. if you're 30 years old you never catch up a 60-year old person...and you will never gain the experience of that "old" person....The veterans should always have an advantage because they're the more experienced players, spend much more money on the game and much more play-time....In my opinion new players should never ever have the chance to catch up!

The key here is you don't NEED to catch up to the vets.  If your concerned with taking out older players in bships train up bships and missles.  Heavy missles takes about 4 days to train to total...Cruise and torps will take you longer but the hardest part will be your bship skills.  I figure if you really wanted to you could get a bship with heavy missle loadout in about a month.  From there you can hold your own in most battles.  What the vets have over you is experience...they have been around a while and know the best tactics and the loadouts that are the most efficient in pvp.  Though there are so many options that there is no best setup for your ship.

They are talking about allowing a way in 6+ months from now for new players a chance to catch up with veteran player in skills.  Not totally but to close the gap because as of right now there is no gap closing,  and in 80% of the cases they are even trianing faster then you.

The idea was that they were going to slow your skill training based on how many sp's you had.  So if your just starting out you will blaze.  If your an old veteran you will train slower but will always be ahead,  but new people will get close until they too start to slow.

Overall it should balance and veterans will alwyas be veterans.  UNless they decide on a new system to help new players then the idea they brought out for feedback.

sorta weird line of thought ....  why should new playeres be able to catch up to veteran players ?

if everyone was the same then there would be no advancement at all, might as well make everyones skill maxed out from the get go. which would be lame.  im of course biased as i have been playing since release, and would be pissed if someone joined a year later and caught up to me in a few months.

as alot of peopel have mentioned though, you can catch a veteran player in a particular skill.. as lv 5 is a max skill level atm.. so i might have engineering 5, but so can anyone after a few weeks of training.

so the answer is a yes and no.

additionaly, being able to play with the veterans is not an issue, there are a miriad of roles that can be filled by any player, in industry, commerce and/or pvp.  specialising in one area of the game in terms of skills learnt works great if your part of corporation, thereby relying on your corp mates to work the areas your weak in.  in this regard a new player can be of use to a corp within a few weeks of playing.  one of the most common starting roles would be as a low end hauler, or a scout.  playing solo on the other hand is very hard if you want to be able to compete with veterans, without specialisation there is no way to "catch" up to veterans skills.

Personaly i love this style of xp, or lack there of.  One issue i had with some mmpogs is that those with no jobs, no rl, no sleep, can move so far ahead of everyone else that it just sucks.  Eve allows a player who plays a few times a week, to keep up with those that play all the times, at least in the skills department.  They can not keep up with the isk (money) earning, mineral earning, agent mission progression, personal relationship building, and game experience.  In this way someone who has been playing for 2 month can, theoreticaly, be advanced to someone who has had an account for 4 months but plays irregularily.

You cant catch up, but once you get to a certain point (~6m skill points), the increases begin to matter less and less.  Its not something to worry about, everyone starts when they do, and there are many places to go with the skills.
