Awnser this question for me please:

WarblazeWarblaze Member UncommonPosts: 178

I heard that the devs are going to implement space stations where people can actually walk around with a character and interact with eachother. First of all, is this true?  If so, has a ETA been set?

i'm asking this question since i played the trial a while ago... i thought it was a awesome game but i just could not identify myself with only a flying piece of metal alone. If this is true i will most definitely subscribe to this game so please let me know guys.

Thanks in advance

Aye its true, your looking at the end of the year, probably next year.

They've mentioned this is purely for aesthetics, no space station combat.

First of, I want to stress that we intend to build the world and experience inside the stations incrementally. The first release will have limited functionality and is expected as a more of a socializing forum than a place for brutally strangling your rival corp members or tossing handgrenades into a crowd of newbies, although both would be rewarding experiences for many players ( not the ones being strangled or blown up, though ).

Let's not forget the video from this last GDC that showed the alpha state of 'Ambulation' and the graphics update.

I never really understood the need for this, I played EVE for 3 years and had no problems with that, infact I think the whole thing about walking around in station is just stupid and unnessesary...

Will it make the game better ? no, will it make any difference ? no ... is it just eye-candy .. probably..

if it was planetary or even station combat then yeah sure it would have been awesome...

If I want to play a game with a character walking around I play WoW (wich I actually do hehe) or Battlefield ..

It's a nice feature, now if they can only implement a twitch style combat system to make combat more interactive (not to mention allow you to actually fly your ship, not just double click somewhere, press your gun1 to 8 buttons once, then sit back and wait) - and do away with the whole "the more you pay us, the more skills we'll let you have" scheme, it would turn into the perfect game.

i think the thing is they needed to make an avatar type engine for a new world of darkness game anyway so they figured what the hell lets put it in eve too just for fun.

Well, I wouldn't mind if combat could be more interactive, ala the old Wing Commander games, but I hope they never touch the skills system, its my favorite feature of the game.... (but I can see how some folks would see it as the games greatest curse)

SWG does many things wrong, but its space system is nice.. Something like that (to give a modern example) is what I would have liked to see in an EvE style enviroment...  Imagine actually being able to dodge those pirates trying to shoot you?  Right now in EvE the AI does most of the combat, you give give it some general instructions and sit back.  Not to mention swg made farming asteroids more fun than moving mats to a container ever few minutes heh.

The main problem I have with the skill system though.. is it doesnt have anything to do with gameplay.. in that you can buy your account, pay it for a year, set some skill, and not play the game for the whole year, and still have the same skills as another player who has worked hard for that whole year.  (assuming say you sold a timecard for the isk to buy the skills, of course, for the non-player).  That sort of thing takes away from the whole feeling like you earned your skill aspect.

Obviously I couldn't expect them to do away with the current system.. there would be too many complaints etc.  What would be nice though is to add a mechanic where you can earn your skills/advancement through gameplay, even if at a much slower rate.. for instance half an sp per action or some such.  That wouldn't be any more of a grind than the game currently is.. (grind rats, grind roids.. grind is grind, be it for isk, mats or sp)

Yes true but dont forget a typical server on SWG holds around 5-10k people eve holds 30k Its all a matter of keeping lag to a minimum. A twitch base system would unfortunalty introduce a lot of lag to the server cluster.

I disagree EvE needs a greater way of socilising and providing a real degree of self tot he game.Right now all we ahve is the static portrait and a ship which is very impersonall. In the end i see the current ambulation as just the begining in time more will be added to it so it will become more.

This is one of the common misconceptions that people make when they look at EVE. You have to remember that none of the ships you are flying in the game are small. In fact they are quite large, the smallest of ships, the frigate, are about the size of a house and they get exponentially bigger from there.

For an appropriate example let's look at starwars ships, you never saw a deathstar dogfighting with another like-sized ship did you? Well that's essentially the scale of ships that players are flying in EVE, not the x-wing or fighter plane sized ships that everyone always mistakes them for.

Now as for having manual control on ships and manual aiming, it's just not really feasible with the type of server structure they have. The latency on MMO's to begin with is already typically 200-300 ms and for twitch gameplay that's just too high. Combine that with the fact that you're also going to have 100's or 1000's of players on the server as opposed to dozens on most FPS servers, and twitch gameplay is just not realistic with current net tech. Hell even the twitch-like MMO's today are still just using dice rolls to determine a hit or miss, they just hide it in different ways.

Ac tully If you look at the ship size comparison poster you will see that a frigate is about the size of a 2 storry mansion rahter than a house.

Well thousands of players did manage with just that and enjoyed EVE as it was even that you could not do something stupid as just walking around in the station.

If CCP did make it as Assault on a station where you had to physically fight at the station to take it over, or walk in the ship then yeah sure it would have been a great feature.

But to only be able to walk around on the station and well.. "socialising" is pretty useless feature made to satisfy gamers who come from games like WoW and so on...

Yes the thousands of players DID manage, but now the hundreds of thousands, including many of the original thousands, want to see this added to the game for several reasons. First and foremost is that while the initial implementation will mainly just be for socializing, it can be built on in the future to encompass more. Personally I can't wait to be able to walk out into my hangar and stare at all my beautiful high-res full scale versions of all of my ships.

Oh and the other thing you are missing is that this whole thing is not taking any devs away from the other parts of the game as they have a whole new team dedicated to that area alone.
