What free game should I play with my nephews

Greetings all and thanks for taking the time to read this topic

I've played most mmorpg and I simply love them. Recently my two nephews have turned 10 and now I found out that they play "runescape" a very simple mmorpg. I tried it, just to play a bit with them, but the game lost it's appealing fast, due to bad graphic and game play.

So I thought to myself. Why not invite the two kids over for a weekend with their uncle pleying mmorpg.

I've looked at quite a couple of free games, but not found one with appealing.

So I thougth, why not ask this great community:

So hence I ask, what game would you suggest for an uncle soon turning 30 and he's two nephews around 10-12 (yeap can't remember their exact age). But it has to be free (both free to download and free to play, since it is a poor uncle *grins*). I dont mind if you can buy extra "something" for money, but in the start it has to be free.

Thanks for all the suggestions people  Cheer's

Yours Sincerely,

Dalamor Dracon

With my experiences, trying quite a few of them myself, this is unfortunately the experiennce you will encounter in all free to obtain and play MMOs.  If you can, try and obtain some used guild wars accounts, that might be your best option.  You might be able to get some for only a few bucks a piece.

    Good luck in your hunt!

    Hi Kjemper

He he, well I know I can't expect a brilliant game for free, but at least one wich is better than runescape *grins*

But I might as well lower my standards a bit. The game don't have to appeal long time for me, just so we can have a fun weekend or two here in the summer time.

A weekend with a fun game, where we can group together, do some quests, kill some mobs and around dinner time go outside and BBQ and perhabs play a bit of football on the grassfield (I have to be a good example and also do a bit of outdoors activity's)

    He he Epeen,

Affraid they learn it in school, at least in Denmark. All their friends play's the game and to not be outside the group, the kid's start to play also.

So I'm affraid it's to late to keep the innocent in the relation to mmorpg's

My thinking actually was that instead of them spending time on a lousy game like runescape, they could at least play a descent game.

But when I think about my nephew in Copenhagen, they all play WoW there at the age of 10. I guess their parents are a bit richer. But at least their parents put some restrictions on the game time, so they only play one or two hours at a time.

But I can remember when I played DAoC. Damn was my time messed up....I did even put my alarm clock to ring at 05.00 to make a raid *grins*. Ohh do I remember the flaming on the forums

    Yours Sincerely,

Maybe Maple Story, Albatross 18, Gunbound, Lunia, Space Cowboy, Anarchy Online, or GoonZu Online would be fun to play with your nephews.  One thing to take into consideration about Runescape is that the character progression system is alot better then most free games.  Most free games use a very very generic class system with a tank, healer, mage, and archer to choose from; sometimes you cannot even choose the gender.  Also the armor progression and skill system is highly linear.  The games I mentioned either have a different gameplay style or has a descent character progression system.

If you really want to impress your nephews, get them each a copy of Guild Wars: Nightfall and play that with them.  One good thing is that its only a 1 time fee.

Edit-  Err I agree with many of the above posters.  MMOs at a young age may be damaging since it is a little addictive.  Having your nephews doing athletic activities helps promote a healthy and fit lifestyle.  It helps boost motabolism that will keep them skinny and fit into thier 20s.  Doing things like taking them to the park, participating in Cub Scouts, or going paintballing are some good activities for adolescents.

i agree with cleffy the ones he mentioned are quite nice. i find myself sometimes playing space cowboys lol. very good action paced mmorpg. with alot of pvp. which might appeal to their inner demon haha. jk but try it if not that then try rappelz or i heard that shadowbane went free to play as well. great game that one is, and also MU online is free now as well. but theres nothing like testing them out and trying them :) see what they like the best then play that one.

Try dungeon runners, its basically built for what your doing and its free.  Its a rather easy game so kids shouldnt really have a problem playing it, and you can teleport to people in your group as well incase they die.  Though if they find a rare item they will have to pay 5$ a month to use it.

Theres a video for it, its a hack and slash diablo 2 type game and all the combat is instanced.

    Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will try and see if I can find one.

And CleffyII, I fully agree. A healthy life styles is alwayes best. Hence the outdoors football, which I love and I know they have started trainning also.

Lucky, my nephews have alot of outdoors activity's too, since their parents control their gaming and try to push them outdoor.

Just hope that I can be as "stricks" when I get children myself in a year and two (yes the lady, has actually asked me about it. Here I was sitting and enjoying a nice supper and suddenly she blows out the questions about baby's. Damn that was difficult to get out of, but to my luck, my backcrawling skill was high enough to avoid it.....for now) *Grins*

Haha, those alarm clock raids could create a lot of flaming back then :)  Personally I would never bother waking up in the middle of the night for a raid. But I took part in a few late night raids (you know, getting bored running around so doing something interesting) :D

    What side did you play?

    Hi there SpiritRaiser,

I did play on Excalibur under the flags of Midgard (well we Danes are proud of our root, when we did conquer most of England/Albion in the old days ).

Hope I one day find the same fealing I had when I played DAoC. Great guild, great society and the happy fealing of exploring and slow leveling. Now a day's its most about leveling fast im affraid and not exploring so much.

Think I did most of the quests in Midgard with my char....oh that was the good old day's im my youth, where my arm was still strong and I had teeth *grins*

I would not let any young kid that I care about near a free MMO. Free MMO's are loaded with foul mouthed racist kids who show off what great parents they have by the way they behave. Look into a system game for them, or play a pay to play MMO.

I may give Dungeon Runners a try.  It's a fairly simple hack and slash game, but in small doses it is a ton of fun.

try knight online? i don't play it right now, but i used to for some time. its really worth trying and theres a lot of people playing it. i really recommend knight online if you looking for a completely free game if you have not tried it yet. give it a try its really good for being a free game.

The question you have to ask yourself is, how old do you to be when they move out?  Being a few years younger definitely has some advantages.  At 31, I have a 2.5 year old now, I want the next one ASAP.  First, for the above reason, and second, I want to see my children get married and perhaps have grandchildren to spoil with drumsets for revenge.

As far as what free MMO to suggest?  You could show them an old school MUD.  www.medievia.com is what I used to play, and still play today.  They may or may not like it though as it is all text based, though it does have some nice color.  It's free and VERY in depth.

Plus, they will get to see a world that most younger people will never experience.  And who knows how much longer MUDs have before they all become extinct.
