...who of you has actually read the books and who has read MORE than the books. Do you think it is essential for the enjoyment of the game to have at least read the books.

I have only watched the movies. I do have the books laying around, but haven't read them yet. It's not keeping me from enjoying the game at all. I think it is a good MMO experience even if you have no knowledge of Middle-Earth prior to entering it.

Ive watched all the movies, have read the hobbit, and am currently about 25% though LOTR. IMO it does help if you have read the books, to get a greater understanding of the world and to help explain things better.

Yeah I kind of guess you can play LotRO fine without knowing anything about the lore, still, if you DO know about the lore it adds a great deal to your gaming experience I'd say...

    I would agree.

The game stands on its own legs but knowing the back story and who the heck is this Strider fellow kinda enrich the experience.

not essential as i enjoy the game having only seen the films, but i imagine it would certainly enhance the game to have read the books.

I voted for having read Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit but I also started that History of Middle Earth in Twelve Volumes only it was even more boring than Lord of the Rings. I enjoyed The Hobbit and I quite liked the films, but overall, I'm underwhelmed by the franchise in genral.

    started with lotro last week

    took a male human rogue

story starts with an attack of a nazgul

i thing is a great difference if you know what it is

or if you just see some black knight playing the bad guy

especially regarding the further developement of the story

(friend gets poisoned by the nazguls knife and doesnt get help...)

    Pi*1337/100 = 42

Well, the "franchise" was a lifetime project of a british philology professor. Seriously, what would you expect? Action loaded grunts smashing each others heads? Tolkien, according to his son, never intended his stories or his work on the elven language and lore to appeal to a broad mass; it was his giant obsession, with ongoing changes and nuance-shaping from the beginning of the world right to where we leave into the fourth age... and probably beyond, hundreds of notes, essays, history texts are yet to be interpreted...

Well, I'm a fan and stuff *laughs*
