Why Tibia is the best MMORPG.

StraykoStrayko Member Posts: 56
First of all. I'd like to introduce myself to you.

My name is Wesley and I'm 17 years old.

Tibia, the game we're putting under the magnifying glass in this thread, was my first MMORPG I've ever played.

Every day, hundred thousands of people log in to play this game.

I've been playing the game with breaks for 3 years now, even though I am retired at the moment.

During some of those breaks, I've tried several other MMORPG's differing from World of Warcraft to EVE online.

In total time, I've spent around 5000 hours playing this game.

Sad? Maybe, but you might get why if you read this thread.

I suggest you read this when you feel attracted to "a new kind of MMORPG" or when you are interested in my point of view of the game "Tibia".

The skill system.

I'll tell you about the basics of Tibia now.

Tibia is a game which resembles your normal everyday MMORPG.

You can choose a class to play, kill monsters, gain experience, advance in levels and in skills.

The skills sytem is very simple, the more you fight with an axe, the more your skills in the arts of axe fighting will be. This goes for the swordfighting, clubfighting, distancefighting and fistfighting aswell.

Then there's the shielding skill, which will advance in action if your shield is equipped, and the fishing skill, which will also improve if you fish a lot.

The magic system.

Then we've got the magic system, which would be the skill system in other MMORPG's of today.

The magic system allows you to learn spells, which can be used by typing the necessary pronounciation for the spelll. Your level determines wether you are ready to learn a spell or not. If you reach the required level, you can buy the spell at the class-guildbase of your class. You can then use the spell, if your magiclevel is high enough to cast the spell. Your magic level increases when you use your manapoints, thus casting spells. Each class has a wide variety of spells, except for the knight since this class only comes with 10 spells in total.

Spells differ from spells that heal yourself slightly to spells that do devastating damage. To regain manapoints, you must eat food which will slowly recover mana or use manapotions.

Mana is a very scarce source so it is to be dealt with carefully.

The servers.

When you start the game and log into your newly created character on one of the currently 72 servers you will be stuck to that server. In total, there are 3 types of servers;

1. The PvP server; This is the most common one and allows PvP everywhere except in protection zones, this includes every town it's depot (where you can store your items) and for example houses the player has bought/is invited to.

2. The non-PvP server; There are quite some of these servers too, you might guess it already, there is no PvP allowed in any area.

3. The PvP-enforced server; You can kill everybody and even gain experience for your kills. Though your victim must be in a certain range around your level.

This is one of the devastating spells called the Ultimate Explosion. The "Hail Portal  Tibia is a message the caster put behind the pronounciation.

The pronounciation for the Ultimate Explosion is thus exevo gran mas vis.

You can see the character casting the spell reaching quite a range with this spell, however, the spell does not reach above him. This is because the protection zone honours it's name. In this case, the protection zone was a depot. I can already tell you that the amount of protection zone that's in the game lies around the 1% of the whole mapped area. This means that you're almost always vulnerable, which makes a quick solve if you have a fight.

The skull system.

Noticed the red skull above the head of the casting character?

This is what you get when you kill 3 people or more (more in this case) on one day. Normally, if you attack someone, you'll get a white skull for 1 minute, if you kill someone you will get a white skull for 15 minutes. This allows other people to kill you without getting a skull. A pretty neat system because it's very simple, but it does justify.

The red skull lasts for a month, and you won't be happy when you have one. You will lose all your equipment if you die and you can't kill anybody unjustified (without a red/white skull) because you will get banned automatically for 7 days.

The four classes.

There are four classes;

The knight, the paladin, the sorcerer and the druid.

Each class comes with their benefits, spell sets and fighting style.

- Knights are the ones closest to combat, they advance faster in melee skills and in the shielding skill. They can use a small selection of runes (I'll get to that later), they advance slowly in magic level and slowly in distance fighting. They gain more health points and capacity (the amount of weight you can carry) but less mana when they level up. These brave warriors are often the core of any fight since they can distract the enemy and block it so the flanks on the back can attack it.

- Paladins, surprisingly to you, are fighters who advance the best in the distance fighting skill and advance medium in magic level and melee, they do advance just as fast in the shielding skill as the knight does. They can create/use a medium selection of runes and gain a medium amount of health points, capacity and mana when they level up. Some say: Too good to be a knight but too bad to be a sorcerer/druid. Not that a knight is a wrong class to choose, on the contrary.

- Sorcerers are the ones who use wands and can use/create a large selection of runes. They advance faster in magic level and the slowest in melee and shielding skills. They gain a low amount of health points and capacity but a high amount of mana when they level up. They mostly have offensive spells. Some say this is the strongest class available.

- Druids are the altered twins of the sorcerers. They use rods instead of wands and can also use/create a large selection of runes. They advance faster in magic level but slightly faster in the shielding and melee skills than the sorcerer does. They also gain a low amount of health points and capacity but a high amount of mana when they level up. They mostly have healing spells. Don't underestimate the druid.

Spells.

There are two types of spells; Rune spells and instant spells, and they all have the same amount of cooldown time (exhaustion), you cannot spamm spells.

Instant spells are triggered instantly while rune spells are spells that are enclosed in... runes. Runes can be used for hunting and PvP, they are a very good source of power and healing.

Knights for example only have a light healing spell, this often doesn't heal more than 1% of the knight's health. Though there is the rune spell of the druid called ultimate healing (not to be mistaken with the instant ultimate healing spell which is cast on yourself when you use it) which they can enclose in a rune and which can be used when you reach magic level 4. This is not a very hard task to complete for a knight, and thus he relies on the ultimate healing rune created by the druid, these runes often heal 40-70% of the knight's health. Runes are a good way to make money and that's why you will see a lot of sorcerers and druids making runes all day long in front of their houses.

The guild system.

Then there's the guild system. In one sentence people join up with people who they like. People make guilds wherein they can chat, have their own guildhall to come together and maybe war with other guilds.

A guildmeeting of the Satori. They existed 4 years.

Those were the basics, now we shall get to the real part of the game;

The community.

Each game has it's own sort of people, the community is an important element in a game. Most of the games nowadays are based on fighting and fighting only. Tibia, on the other hand, is not a game based on fighting only.

There are 72 servers split up in 3 types of servers. But even these 72 servers each come with their own gameplay. Each server has it's own community, and that's what it's all about in Tibia, wether you play a PvP, non-PvP or PvP-enforced server.

Most of the communities are divided in 3 layers;

- The 1st layer, you'll see a lot of high-leveled players here, but also a lot of mid-leveled and low-leveled respected players. These players often have quite a "poo"load of cash.

- The 2nd layer, which consists mostly of mid-leveled players and low-leveled players but also some high-leveled players, they are not well known within the whole community but they just tag along with the rest of the server. They don't really interfere with any conflicts or anything and just live a normal everyday life.

- The 3rd layer, a lot of low leveled players are to be found here. Mostly the ones who just started and players who don't speak English very well, when this happens they often come in groups of 3-8 people from their own country and live pretty isolated lives. There are also a few mid-leveled players among those.

Respect and status are of major concern. If you ever get into a conflict, then you will rely on your own strength. But if people start popping up with friends, you might want to fall back on your connections. Conflicts do occur, and not too shabby either. Conflicts can involve the whole server.

This is the part where I'll explain you about each server coming with it's own gameplay. Cause not every server is peaceful and quiet, as in most other MMORPG's.

Ofcourse there are servers which are peaceful and quiet, but on PvP servers there are often conflicts about power. These conflicts pretty much always involve the whole 1st layer. People will hunt eachother down and face eachother in large scaled fights to drive the opposite group off of the server.

These people want to reign a server and often abuse their power so they can get better from it.

Some people have wars for fun, some people have wars because they could just drink eachothers blood and some people have wars because they are addicted to warfare.

Some people like to join those people, some like to oppose them, some like to live under their protection and some don't even know what's going on such a server.

But ofcourse there are different types of servers, but even on those servers lots of fun events and things can happen.

We'll proceed to the tight and fun community now!

The fun things mostly involve the people who are not interested in leveling up and all that. People don't want to stare at monsters all day, kill them, go to the next one. People like to have fun. And Tibia is the perfect way to have it! We don't need help of gamemasters to have fun and to have events, let them do their jobs and ban cheaters! We have all the possibilities to have fun, and why not make use of it? People organize events every day, that's what keeps people from getting bored and let the people have fun.

These events often involve the 2nd and the 1st layer, but some high-leveled players get sick from leveling too every now and then. I'm not saying that there are no high-leveled players who don't enjoy events, even if they took all the time of playing Tibia.

I can tell you from my 3 year experience, that people come up with the weirdest things.

I've seen big-ass parties where everybody comes together just to have a hell of a time.

I've seen zoos, where people lure all kinds of creatures to a certain area and enclose them with objects so they can't run away and ask an entrance fee to enter their zoo. I've seen dozens of restaurants and I even ran the love bar where people could meet and enjoy a glass of wine while getting to know eachother better.

Big football tournaments held each year with fantastic prizes such as these.

People make songs, incredibly popular sites have been put up for this game with news resources and a lot of other stuff. I've even started cooking with Strayko once, and tried to create a Tibian live soap series.

Maybe this will give you an idea of how big Tibia is...

These screenshots were all "pictures of the day" from the site named www.tibianews.net

If you are curious about the game I suggest you take a look there.

Now, I hope I gave you an idea what Tibia is all about. It's about friendship, community and fun. Atleast, that's what it is for me.

I'm proud that I have been a Tibian.

This is why. This is why Tibia.

Now, I hope I gave you an idea what Tibia is all about. It's about friendship, community and fun. Atleast, that's what it is for me.

I'm proud that I have been a Tibian.

This is why. This is why Tibia.

This skill/levell system is also used in World of Warcraft, as well as in Final Fantasy XI and Everquest 2. some games, such as Ultima Online, got rid of the level system and only go for the skill system. As you can see, nothing unique here.

Again, nothing special here. The fact you have to type the spell is fairly intresting, but it would be wise to simply macro it. Its been done before in games like UO and Runescape.

    The servers.

    When you start the game and log into your newly created character on one of the currently 72 servers you will be stuck to that server. In total, there are 3 types of servers;

A little correction. the PVP servers are just normal servers. the fact that, Imo, it can't be labeled PVP server is because of the fact you can actually get BANNED from the game  for pking after a certain amount of kills.

Safe zones and AOE spells. I find it difficult to find a pvp based MMO that doesn't have them.

The same system is active in Lineage 2 and ArchLord, nothing special here, moving on.

    The four classes.

    There are four classes;

Don't underestimate the druid.

cookie cutter classes, no comment is needed and it would also be unfair because this is simply what works best

Same system is avaible in Ragnarok Online and ArchLord, only diffrence is that they are gathered through quests and drops instead of player created. the fact Sorcerers and druids are making runes all day long in front of their houses gives away the H U G E amount of excitement and fun you will get from this game...

    The guild system.

Then there's the guild system. In one sentence people join up with people who they like. People make guilds wherein they can chat, have their own guildhall to come together and maybe war with other guilds.

A guildmeeting of the Satori. They existed 4 years.

never been done in other mmorpg's.....ever!

    Those were the basics, now we shall get to the real part of the game;

    Finally

    The community.

Each game has it's own sort of people, the community is an important element in a game. Most of the games nowadays are based on fighting and fighting only. Tibia, on the other hand, is not a game based on fighting only.

There are 72 servers split up in 3 types of servers. But even these 72 servers each come with their own gameplay. Each server has it's own community, and that's what it's all about in Tibia, wether you play a PvP, non-PvP or PvP-enforced server.

    Most of the communities are divided in 3 layers;

Typical standup you will find in pretty much every MMORPG's, especialy in games that have achievements through pvp such as Lineage, Lineage 2 and Ultima Online. the 3rd layer gave me a chuckle. according to Mr Tibia fan here, those of low level don't speak english very well because they are from a non-english speaking country, yes folks, the level hints the location of the player behind the character,so the next time you try to speak to a low level player, be sure to bring your swedish dictionary, and they live on top of a mountain all by themself, completely isolated from everyone else while they play Tibia.

No doubt the first thing that Mr fan will say "But gameloading, I meant our ingame life!"

sadly, Tibia is a GAME, not an online life. But what do I know, this is comming from someone who, according to Mr Fan, has no life. See the irony?

but we're getting off-topic. Yes, I know reading this is tiresome, But its about just as exciting as playing Tibia. hang in there, we're almost done!

This is exactly what happens in games like Lineage, Lineage 2, ArchLord and EVE online, and even Ultima Online, although not as heavily as the previous games mentioned. out of those games, I have the most experience with Lineage 2 so I shall use that as an example. The entire game world of Lineage 2 is build around this concept. Lineage 2 takes it a step further then Tibia does by introducing the well known Castle Siege system. Clans and alliances (an Alliance are multiple clans working together. This is not just some vocal agreement as in Tibia, its actually part of the game system). After a castle has been taken over, the clan can set the tax for the entire region (depending on which castle you take over), as well as controll over the manor system (check out the Lineage 2 site for more info on that), castles are taken over during castle sieges, and the fight takes place inside the castles, which are huge, usually involving a few hundred players.. Ofcourse, Lineage 2 offers full open pvp and quite a heavy death penalty (although not as high as Tibia, which is enough to make you want to quit the game). Castle sieges happen on set times. when castle sieges aren't happening, the exact same thing as in Tibia happens on Lineage 2, but with more depth because it also has an effect on relations during the very important castle sieges.

Mess up with one guild, and they will turn against you in next friday's Castle Siege. Help another guild out, and they might help you in the castle siege. This is why Lineage 2 has more depth then Tibia, it gives the player more control of the gameworld. ArchLord roughly works the exact same way, key diffrence is that only one person can be the ruler but in return, has even more effect on the gameworld

    We've got TBL for example.

    Bakeries.

And if people can't get it at home, why not in Tibia?

Make your own castles or whatever you want to make.

I've made ones 10 times as big as that one, but I don't have any screenshots from 'em anymore. :(

But that's not all... This game goes far, way far. People fake screenshots just for fun and capture humor in just 1 screenshot or faked screenshot.

People make songs because the company behind Tibia can't be bothered to make any music for the game., incredibly popular sites have been put up for this game with news resources and a lot of other stuff. I've even started cooking with Strayko once, and tried to create a Tibian live soap series.

Maybe this will give you an idea of how big Tibia is...

Yeah a tibian soap in the tibia national language:

    PaladinBR:"Omgz lolol, swordbabe37 u liek cheated on me wtfwtf?//?

Swordbabe37:"omgz wtfz???//? i did not cheat on u liek wtf?

PaladinBR:"WTF, rofl, u liek think i'm retarded? i saw u with s3ph1r0th! there he is, what do you have to say for urself S3ph1r0th???/?"

    S3ph1r0th:"....Swe?"

    Been to the movies?

People use spells in tibia as company names...

Coincidence? No, it's the pronounciation of the strong haste spell in Tibia.

The above 4 screenshots were all fake, except for the company called Utani Gran Hur.

These screenshots were all "pictures of the day" from the site named www.tibianews.net

If you are curious about the game I suggest you take a look there.

random things, happens in most MMO's, not really that game related.

Now, I hope I gave you an idea what Tibia is all about. It's about friendship, community and fun. Atleast, that's what it is for me.

I'm proud that I have been a Tibian.

This is why. This is why Tibia.

Strayko has been spreading the delusion that Tibia is a unique game of extremely high quality that is like no other, this post will once and for all prove him wrong. Obviously he will come in and tell me how wrong I am and more of that blabla which can be safely ignored without missing out on anything! I hope this post will convince you, the reader, to not directly jump into the game's premium fee services, but to go for a free account, see for yourself how outdated and of low quality the game is, and spend your money on a diffrent, more suited MMORPG. This shall also be my last post in this section, so the only other things you will read on will be the OP bashing everyone who doesn't agree that Tibia is the second comming.

this will be my last post here, so the rest of all posting will be done by Strayko.
  • StraykoStrayko Member Posts: 56
Fucking hell, I wrote a whole fucking post, pressed backspace and lost it.

    Anyways, basically:

The "features", I couldn't care less, they're all the same in most of the games, some are done differently here though.

I prefer most of these over others.

Can't macro 'cause there is an exhaustion time between the spells.

The servers, you can kill eachother, therefore it's pvp.

The skull system, it maintains order and is a very nice addition indeed.

Classes, they're not quite as cookie cutter as you think. They all have another role and they offer a lot of variation.

The spells, standing in front of your house making runes is fun indeed. If you have friends, which you should in Tibia.

There are so many peopel to chat with and to just loaf around with, you can also do something else while making runes.

The guild system, just showed you an example. Guilds are to be found in every MMORPG's, but Tibia's guilds do have a lot more unity. :D

Community, yeah people who are lower leveled mostly can't come around in the community, because they have bad English. Even though, nowadays, you can come around with Polish in a lot of servers.

If you don't fit in the community, you'll never get a high level, because you need friends to help you and if you get into a conflict with other people, you will likely need to communicate with them and if you can't, you'll probably be dead meat and won't stand a lot of chance.

I don't see the irony though, because obviously, you're the one bashing people on this forum, coming with arguments that have absolutely nothing to do with this game and can't possibly counter my posts.

You're just seeing the surface of this game, you need to look deeper.

About your Lineage 2 story, I've played this game for a long time and damn are you off.

An alliance in Tibia is the same as in Lineage, in Lineage the game just says you're in an alliance. You can say that yourself or put that in your guild comment in Tibia.

Castle sieges? Whoopdeedoo, been there, done that in a lot of other games (i.e. Ragnarok).

In Tibia you'll be respected or feared, you will be respected if you treat people good and feared if you treat people bad.

There's reason to fear, because if you die, you lose a lot.

If you get into a conflict in Tibia, and it can happen anytime, you might kill somebody or be killed. Mostly, this kill will be repayed by a kill.

Vengeance is sweet, people actually quit, because they get killed. Let them, if they want that.

Most people set a price for the kill on their friends or themselves using the help of their friends. Pay the price, or you'll never be able to play that server again, because if you come online and leave the safe zone you'll immediately be hunted down.

Castle Sieges in Lineage are not comparable to Tibia's wars and conflicts. They actually get fought, because of reasons.

Not just because they are just another feature of the player to enjoy.

Now I'm not the one bashing people, it's you obviously.

I'd love you to keep posting here, but on a normal way, not judging things while not even having experienced them.

I was going to post about you and me could actually have a normal discussion, heck I'd even try out most of the features in other games if you'd like me to.

Dude, you're posting all kinds of things, and you're trying to counter my points and I know exactly what you mean, it's just that you are so way off. Tiba is so much more, and that's what I'm trying to make clear here.

As I said, please keep on posting, because you're so way off. You need judge everything after you've actually experienced it.

Every experienced Tibia player would agree with what I've said in this section of the forums.

I disagree with you. Tibia is a pretty good game (eh...) but it is not the best. It is far from it.

How can you not like WoW or EVE? Only bad thing is paying to play.

Graphics are 100x better than Tibia.

People for the most part are the same. You have the jerks, the nice people, and the people who keep to themselves.

Overall, I would put Tibia at the bottom of the MMORPG list. The one things that makes Tibia fun to play is my friends that I have made.

I have made some great friends on WoW, but truth is, I am going to college next year and need to save all the money I can.

I do like your long ass list though. Very nice.

Any game that is going to be a really good MMORPG is going to be a game that you have to pay for.
  • StraykoStrayko Member Posts: 56
Well, ofcourse this is just my opinion, it doesn't apply for everybody else.

I've played WoW (Lv. 60 Tauren warrior) and EVE (hopping from trial to trial, constantly transferring my ship).

And I've played a lot of other games, to be honest EVE is one of the very few MMORPG's I haven't played seriously.

I'll stand my ground, I really think Tibia is the best MMORPG out there because it's so interactive and it has so much more possibilities than any other MMORPG. :o

And more than 70000 people pay for Tibia.

Getting banned for killing people? Sounds lame. UO had a much better system. Nearly the same rules for grey/red but if you had a red skull you just couldn't enter a town otherwise the guard would kill you.
  • StraykoStrayko Member Posts: 56
    Ya, same person.

I'm kinda trying to promote this game a bit and defend it, because so many people scold this game while it is not at all a bad game.

It's as the other user already posted, highly underrated.

It's okay to player kill once or twice or just kill bad people who are player killers you won't get banned, but if you go on a mass player killing spree like kill around 20+ people in a day that is where the GMs will ban you, the penalty for dieing in Tibia is extremely harsh, thus the reason for the ban.

Yes, I quite agree. Tibia is the best MMORPG in the world right now.

I have played EQ2, WoW, DAOC, MU, RO and many many others but didn't find something quite like or even close to Tibia.

Definitely Tibia has 10 year old 2-D graphics. True. It doesn't have as many races, classes, spells or stuff like other games.

But FUN wise. No other game come even close to the FUN provided by Tibia.

If you are looking for graphics, yes then go and play EQ2 or WoW.

But, what you expect from a game is fun, then play no other, but Tibia.

Or you can play a PVP enforced server where you can kill as much as you want.

That you can get banned for pking on PVP servers is very logical, considering that there's almost no protection zone at all.

    PvP can be done everywhere.

Being banned from any game because of PVP'ing is absolutely ridiculous.  They allow players to kill each other but then put a restriction on the amount?  Who decides who gets banned?  How many kills until they are banned?  What if a player is harassing someone so they decide to kill them repeatedly, who is at fault then?  It sounds like a retarded system.  After hearing that, I wouldn't even give this game a first look.

Played it for a short time.

Horrible game, nothing to recommend it at all.

I do recommend it, didn't state it was the best MMORPG for nothing. ;D

You probably didn't play it long enough, I can tell, because if I were to be used to 3D MMORPG's and played this game for the first time, I'd say that this game sucked aswell, I honestly admit.

But I started playing this game in the 2D age, so it was not hard to get deep into the game at all.

I still think this is the best MMORPG I've ever played.

Y'know, I do not understand any of you flamers.

"I CANT GET UP A LADDER"

"WAY TOO HARD MAN TIBIA NOOB GAME! "

Too  play Tibia, not just logging in and quitting, I'm talking about playing the game, properly! It does not involve gaining levels and begging for items.

Tibia has an entire new dimension to it. In games like WoW, nobody knows nobody. Theres way too many people on one server, and no community in the server, that nearly every single friend you made is people you needed to help you do a 3 man quest or something like that.

Hahaahahha, and while I'm at it, what are quests in WoW?

Oh! Look, he has a golden ! on top of him.

Get three skeleton bones and this stuff?

Yes! Did it! Lets get this cool reward.

    Woot 400exp!

And don't you go telling me I know nothing of WoW, cause I do, or Guild Wars, or whatever games you guys are comparing to Tibia.

I've played em all! Trust me, this ain't a joke.

OK back to what I was talking about.

No game has a community like Tibia, people know people. I have so many people I know in the game, who ain't even on my VIP list! (Buddy list, etc.)

Because you know more people, you talk to more people!

You don't have to be a level 100 to get known either. Take me for example, level 25 free account sorcerer. Yet I can safely say I am quite well known.

I am the Vinerans 3rd forum troll, the half elf on the roleplaying boards, the event maker in Vinera, the guy who never levels, the tibianews journalist!

I go under all these names and more, and I didn't have to have a high level or be a premium account or anything at all!

Also, games like WoW don't...Move, I guess is the term. In Tibia not all worlds are the same, not at all! Prices for items is one thing. Doesn't it make sense that if a server is older, things would be cheaper because there would be more of those things around?

Yet in other games prices are like..the same forever. A wee bit crazy if you ask me !

Wow, I went on for a bit longer then I expected, and I think I'll stop here, so the noobs have less to flame about.

No its not logical that u can get banned for too much pking. The people who made Tibia should be able to put a restriction on the amount without letting the person doing it then banning them. That would make a lot more sense... don't you think?

No it does not make sense the way you said.

Because I know people who got themselves a week ban or something like that for pk'ing because they were getting killed themselves, so rather then loose the exp or items, they just got a week ban instead.

Its about the community and"the freedom, in this game you have things like legends. Famous guilds, PvP skills (which actually make a difference). Since that one guy start telling about ,that the game ain't unique. I mean Tibia goes back to '97, doesn't that make it original?. I played over atleast 80+ mmorpg's, and i done tibia over six years with breaks. In the breaks i done all those simple games like your famous "W0W". I mean, if you don't add friends to your friendlist you will probably never see them again) for example. Most people also need fancy graphics to get entertained. Besides the game doesn't have a exp lock either. The highest level at the moment is if i am right, a Lv.334 Elder druid. Anyway it comes down to this, the reason not many people play this ( I mean 60,000 player online ain't much these days for a mmorpg). Is because people blow off the game before they even really tried it. Besides the words care bears is unknown in tibia. So stop flaming the game, and don't get cocky over bad graphics. And the music? trust me you don't miss it.
