I do not exactly know what you mean.. so i'll interpret it my way
I believe a person's beliefs are not those which he truly thinks are correct, just those a character expresses. Therefore, a person can say something completely different to the public than what he truly thinks is right (i think we have a word for that.. politics ). I know i myself do sometimes go along with the general opinion on things, just to make sure i don't somehow make myself noticed.
I think words and beliefs don't really define you. I think your actions do.
