Looking for a juicy Hack'n'Slash

So I'm looking for a new mmorpg to indulge myself in. Preferably free to play. Nothing fancy, no 'awesome PvP', no silly stuff like a 'decent guild system' or ''stunning graphics'. I just want a game with graphics that don't annoy me, a battle system that can keep me focused, and plenty of customization to make a memorable character. Bonus points if the classes are fun to toy around with. Can be Korean, cutesy anime, whatever.

And yes, I've been through WoW.

So, just what are you looking for in the aforementioned combat system? Most MMOs use an autoattack + hotbar style like the one you saw in WOW.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

If it's going to be auto-attack, then at least I want to press some funny buttons. Do something interesting once in a while during a battle. Maybe some snazzy sfx in between. I'm not picky, as long as it can entertain me. Instead of aggravating me with the same battle sequence over and over again.

Hmm, AoC is moving comepletely away from the autoattack system, but is P2P and has all the bells and whistles you said you could do without, not to mention the 8 months till its released...

Guild Wars and Silkroad Online both manage to make combat fairly interesting. Of course, Silkroad spoils it through the endless grindfest.

Gunz Online is all about twitch conflict. Unfortunately the thing is all but run by people using bots and/or macros.

DDO's combat is great, very action orientated, no need to target someone to hit them, you can just swipe your axe, sword or whatever and hit whoever is in front of it, casters are fantastic too, no standing there waiting 2 or 3 seconds to cast a spell, virtually all spells are instant cast, you never really get the chance to stand still in battle!

I would even go as far as to say that in my opinion, DDO has the best combat of any MMO!

As for character customisation, well, it has that too, you can virtually start with a blank canvas, want a wizard specialising in necromancy, repeating crossbow, shuriken and well whatever really, you can do it in DDO, you can multiclass up to three classes, so for instance by the time you reach level 14 (the cap shortly) you could be 4 levels in wizard, 4 in fighter and 6 in ranger or however many levels of the chosen character you require. Then you have all the feats to choose from and then the skills, oh and then the enhancements (which have just been revamped and are releasing in a couple of weeks) and there will also be Dragonmarks in Module 4 I think which is April.

You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.

Remind me of that LL Cool J song Can-I-Bus, which was a diss to Canibus for dissing him and in one verse he said, "Because 99% of Canibus don't exist." Funniest verse in the whole song.

Take out Canibus and put DDO, and it's samething. DDO is so bad now that no promotes except We3ster.

That would depend on your interpretation of the word 'flopped', the dictionary says that (amongst the many definitions for the word) a 'flop' is a 'complete failure', DDO is NOT a 'failure', let alone a 'complete failure'. So your attempt to gain some sort of kudos on these boards with a less than pithy comment has 'flopped'!

Well, DDO costs money, and it may be worth it, but i'm sticking with Guild Wars >.> It has no monthly fee. Thank God.
  • RonaruudoRonaruudo Member Posts: 102

To be honest, I've been in the DDO beta.

It was the first mmo that made me nauseous. Not to mention how difficult it was to find a group. Not to mention that walking in the 'main area'  was a puke-inducing pain in the butt.

No, I got D&D books here. If I get that desperate I'll just try to find a group and play the tabletop version again.

Sorry if you get paid to convince people towards DDO, but I'm not going back there. Especially now that it costs money to play.

I cannot convince anyone to do anything, let alone, make someone's choices for them in the choosing of an MMO, only you can do that, all I can do is offer you my opinions......................

maybe you should try Diablo II with the expansion set (lord of destruction). It's not really an mmo, still, it is (in my opinion) the best hack and slash game out there. Both D2 and the expansion are like 10 euro's each so it's definitely worth a try.

Dungeon Runners is a free hack and slash, and it can be fun.  It's more for the kind of person who liked Dungeon Siege than a Diablo 2 fan, though.  Granado Espada is an Asian MMORPG which will be available soon in English, and it has some interesting features.  I go into more detail about it here (www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/117845), if you want to take a look.  If you want quick hack and slash action, that's what I play the game for.  It can be fun in that regard if you go to the right areas.  Zero character customization in terms of appearance, but I like the combat and skill system.

hack 'N' slash MMO??? i have never seen or heard of such a thing. hack 'N' slash is like dynasty warriors and samurai warriors. I guess D&D wold be the closest think since you can control your melee dmg if you want to but other then that i have no clue

  • YummydainYummydain Member Posts: 51
To tell you the truth, the whole Hack 'N Slash genre has been at a huge downfall lately. Every "good" online game, in my opinion, seems like a copy of the other. All the asian MMO games are so much of a grind that those of us that don't have the time to devote to them can't really accomplish much.

Everquest 2 is probably the closest at not having the same fight sequence over and over, though you DO have to pay for this. The economy is kinda boned right now because players are pricing low level crafted items fairly high thinking that the average player will be able to pay for these. Which they can't.. I know most people don't like EQ2 but it's been one of my favorite games the past few months. I don't currently have a subscription for the game right now because I've decided to once again try out WoW with their semi-new expansion, The Burning Crusade. The expansion turned out to be alright. I would recommend buying it if you have a higher level character on that game. I also have a subscription to Lineage II which turns out to not have changed much the past year or 2. So I don't recommend trying that out.

For something free MONTHLY, I guess Guild Wars... But the players on there are somewhat.. Immature. So I don't play very often, if at all.

Don't try Vanguard, the game is just horrid. Still many bugs they should have realized and taken care of during beta. Laggy as hell if you have 1g of ram or less. Funny thing that if you edit you .ini files it lags less.. I wonder why Sigil can't take care of that themselves.. hah.

Doubt this helped, but hey.. Whatever floats your boat.
