My English teacher and I were having a discussion earlier today about if photographs limit understanding in the world. I've been wondering if they do or not because there are so many sides to look at (expressionalist, realist, etc.). But that really isn't the point of this post. During my discussion I brought up a train of thought that all art is in its own way biased towards the thoughts of the artist. In my mind any thing created by a human is biased to his or her train of thought at the time. My teacher argued otherwise saying that all art is not biased. Basing her argument on the fact that art is meant for the sole purpose that the observer determines his/her own opinion.
I'm just wondering what you guys think. Is all art biased or is it completely unbiased until the observer determines their own opinion?
I hope some day we can all put aside our racisms and prejudices and just laugh at people

I know what you're saying, and it's an interesting thought. However, I think the language you are using might be confusing the issue slightly. So we should start by clearing up the semantics...
Bias would be defined as predisposition or prejudice (bias towards) or a preference or an inclination, especially one that inhibits impartial judgment.
Therefore, the art itself cannot be biased, only the artist. A painting, song or a poem does not have its own opinions and at most could said to be an expression of the artist's bias. So really the question is "does our understanding of the word "bias" mean that all people are biased in all matters?". Some definitions include the word "unfair" before "preference", and the use of "prejudice" in the definition would suggest something a little stronger than someone just having a slight inclination one way or the other. I think it would probably be safe to say that pretty much everyone will have some bias in them about some things.
Should we then go on to say that everything created by people can display an expression of their creator's bias? A table could be an expression of it's creator's preference in table design just as a landscape painting might be an expression of an artists love of hills and trees. I'm not sure that in describing the creator having preference in these cases, we would use the word "bias".
So I would say that only if the artist is expressing something that he/she has a bias towards would the art itself be an expression of that bias.
Well, I would have to disagree on the bias thing when taking pictures for photography art. I keep a camera with me almost 24/7.
I love nature shots of insects and animals and every now and then a landscape. My pictures are usually of the unusual and rare. Take for an example, this one:
This was shot last summer while I was walking around my pool. What does this mean to you? I call this Survival. Some see it as teamwork. Some may see it as something else, maybe perverted?...LOL. To me, this was a rare shot. Look at the outline of the toad in the water, also.

I don't feel that biased is as negative a word as many people think it is. Bias is really just the interjection of one's thoughts and the omission of others. All people are biased, and art is nothing more than an extension of personal thought. Why is it that peoples written words can be biased when in fact they are only symbols that invoke emotions? Is that not what art is? Photographers view the world from their own perspective; painters paint the world that they view; writers layout their thoughts with pen and paper. It is all art and it comes from the mind. Anything that comes from the mind is perpetually flawed to views of that mind.
Outfctrl- I'm not denying arts beauty and originality i'm simply stating that all forms and samples of aft have their own bias. Just imagine someone else took a similar picture to that of the toad, lizard, and beetle. His photo is of a different bias then yours. he might have wished to view the animal orgy from a different angle. modjoe said something earlier in this thread about how art is all inevitably biased, i think he's right.
