This game is one of the best believe me! It's one of the (very) few games that has kept my interest for 3 years; no other game so far has done that for me.

And don't let all those EvE fanbois dissuade you :) They will post in their reviews of this game how EvE is so much better because it has 8k+ players. More players doesnt' mean better game :) Darkspace is action/strategy and just a lot of fun.

Try it out. And DON'T USE YOUR 5 DAY COUPON RIGHT NOW! Save it for when the free trial ends on April 4th.

Hi all,

After reading thistopic I feel like I should give you my 2$, so here it goes:

DarkSpace is way better than EVE. Sure - the graphic isn't the same as in EVE; but what the heck-

EVE is only fun untill you have a Battleship - and to affoard a BS, you need money -
and since the marked is screwed, the only way to earn money is by MINING.
And after 1 year of constant mining, it ain't fun anymore! Sure - you can kill "pirates" too, but
the way they spawn is makes it too risky.
IE: EVE Online is a expensive chat with a inbuilt screensaver.

Next: Who wrote that about 80 ships in 1 fight?
That's just BULLshit - a single system in EVE can't handle more than 50 fighting ships - if you have a good connection that is - over 50 ships, and the LAG will be too high - Ships now turning, modules taking 2 minutes to activate, WEAPONS YOU CANT ACTIVATE, and don't even mention what happens if you warp in DURING the fight - it can take more than 5 minutes before your client loads every ship and missile - and when the client FINALLY loads, you'll often end up D.E.A.D.

So no, DS is WAY better than EVE.

Regards,
CrazzlY

That was me whosaid that. They upped the server node after some of those fights. It WAS laggy but it was a 80 BS fight.

I am no fanboi really.
I wish DS only the best and might try it out again this weekend.

Still eve is no bad game. It can be fun flying ina frigate instead of mining all day. Or you do it like me: Powermining for 2 weeks and buy 2 BS. :D

Yes you can make 200 mill in 2 weeks easy. ::::40::

Maybe we'll meet up in DS sometime.
Since it has a steep learnign curve there will be a noob named Jequan asking hell a lot of questions. ::::31::

Edit: Earned 5 mill isk while i typed in that reply. ::::28::

Seems like everyone that has been promoting it so far has came from the DS community. Has anyone who knew nothing about this game before reading this thread already download it and started playing it? If so, how about some initial impressions?

So, explain the play style.

Do you click on the ship you want to attack and watch your ship do it, or are you actually piloting, aiming, and pulling the trigger??? By calling it an RTS, it seems like a point click and watch sort of thing. Is that so?

Some real detail in the explanation would help. Maybe walk us through what you as a player do when you attack another ship.

It is Realtime First Person Player controlled.. What more can i say..

You want a walkthrough? Ok, lets say you are flying an Elite Assault Dreadnought equipped with several Laser and Torpedo Batteries.

You jump into a ongoing Battle using your FTL drive, and come out at a Speed of, say, 14 gu/s that you had accellerated beforehand. You examine the Tactical situation and Manoever towards a Target, firing torpedoes appropriately and try to get behind them to use your Lasers at close range for maximum efficency. While doing that, a Supply Ship is supoprting you, trying to keep in your Fire Shadow and constantly repairing your Armor..

You cant really expect me to put all the detail in here tho, but that should give you a hint..

EDIT:
Theres a free trial, the Client is small, just check it out instead of reading Essays? :P

Most of what needs to be said has already been said (I'm never going to up my rank if Dem and sono keep saying everything ;) ). I will tell you off the bat that I'm another DS vet, and my opinion is probably biased... but I also have beta tested many of the competing games out there.

So, first off I'll say that I cannot truely compare EvE to DS, based on the fact that after a couple days of it, I just simply lost interest. Yes, I know it's changed a lot since beta, and I check out their website from time to time, but in my opinion quality vs. quantity counts... and DS has it where it counts.

I did see a post a while back on how someone couldn't reach an admin to help correct their problem after a couple days. The best way of doing that is just checking out the lobby and/or posting in the forum. It is very rare to not get a response from Grff within a couple days on any sort of registration problem. More often than not, other DS players will freely help the "all lowercase handle with yellow font". What some people may not like about the community is that we enforce a strict RoC. Usually the people that break the RoC are the ones that just log on to post porn links and see if they can get a rise from staff members. If I wanted that, I'd go to battle.net and watch the chat window for 5 minutes. The DS community is something that I find just as addictive as the game (half of my time is hanging around in the lobby talking with other players).

Now I do see some confusion when people ask if DS is an RTS. Yes, it certainly is, but don't let that fall under the RTS stereotype of overhead view with point and click interface. DS is a better representation of "real time strategy" than most others. Combat is much like what sono described above. Instead of point and click, you manually turn your ship using a yaw control, set numbers to your different weapons configurations (1 for heavy beams, 2 for torpedoes etc) so you don't run out of energy mashing the spacebar, try to outmaneuver the enemy while pounding his weak points... if you use tactics, there's a good chance you'll have a pretty good outing. Of course learning some of those moves takes time, and that's why we tell everyone DS has a steep learning curve. It may even take a couple months for you to find out what ship/faction you like the most (and with something around 45 different ships and around 100 modifications, you can see why) and what configuration suits you best. It's all part of the game, really.

Here comes the best part about DS... don't really like being owned by dreadnaughts in your tiny frigate? You can build planets up from scratch, ferry troops to enemy planets, bomb enemy planets, rearm and repair friendly ships, grab an interdictor and try to hold the enemy from attacking your position, scout enemy territory for your fleet right before a major invasion happens... there's many different viable options other than combat.

Take myself for example. I'm not really a PvP fan, so at first I thought DS would be unkind to me. Many people thought I was a horrible player because my ships damaged and kills were not very high. Not to say the combat in DS is bad, it's better than most games. There's nothing like watching an enemy dreadnaught bear down on your little destroyer, thinking he's got an easy kill... then watching him run into a minefield you laid a minute beforehand and watch the would-be attacker become paralyzed and frozen meat for any friendly ships to answer your distress call. Sure, I may be 350th on the ships damaged ranking, but all the construction points have landed me the number 65 spot on that list. Lots of times a well built planet can mean the difference between holding the enemy at bay and losing your system to an invading fleet.

Of course with every game there are problems, and one we have right now is lag. Since the patch reworked almost the entire server code, we've spent a couple weeks in laggy servers while our admins work on the problem. It's hard to accurately judge combat when your turning system won't turn for 5 seconds after you press the button... or crash into a planet because your ship is 500gu where it should be. For those of you trying it out right now, try and wait for the server code to be fixed, then judge DS... it'd be pretty understandable to hate the game because of the lag at the moment.

One last thing: on the "Links" section of the DarkSpace game, I found that you did not include our friendly community-run webpage, the DarkSpace Connection. This site has a plethora of tutorials, screenshots, news... check it out if you're interested. http://dynamic6.gamespy.com/~darkspace/site/

There's much more I could say, but I'll end with this:

DS is the ONLY MMO I have ever paid for. image

You don't point and click Diablo-style and see your ship attack automatically. You have to maneuver and fire your weapons yourself. You are always in control, and while it seems daunting at first you will learn what to do. You can even control what weapons you fire via control groups (number keys), or just make one massive alpha strike with the spacebar (everything you've got fires). Alpha strikes are FUN!

You can have a ship designed for close combat (assault ships) with lots of beam weapons and torpedoes. You can have a ship designed to fire missiles from far away, or even launch small fighter craft. You can get a ship designed solely for bombing enemy planets, or one designed to capture enemy planets (and the two of them work very well together).  And you can modify those ships if you want a different armament than the stock version (I like modifying Kluth dreadnoughts designed for close combat into missile dreads)

And if you can't target your enemy but you know he's there (due to ecm or cloak) you can manually target an area in space and try to hit him that way. You can self-detonate your torpedoes any time after firing them, same with your missiles, your bombs, or your mines. You can even self destruct if you wish; exploding ships (either from self destructing or getting blown up) damage every ship in the immediate area. You might even take an enemy with you when you explode, or possibly an ally nearby (it happens). Stations are great fun when they explode in the middle of their fleet! It's carnage. I've seen lots of death spam from one exploding station, usually teammates who didn't get out of the way in time. Lots of fun :)

I don't think there's been enough time for any new players who just heard of DS through this site to post feedback here yet. But they will soon. It's either gonna be very positive, or they will say that the game just isn't for them. Not everyone likes team-based pvp.

You REALLY, REALLY need a first-person camera mode.....REALLY. That's my only complaint so far...everything seems very intuitive so far (downloaded it a couple hours ago).

I just can't get immersed in the game from this 3rd person view....feels like I'm playing a console game or something. No feeling of "being there".

lol, I dont think I would be able to play the game in 1st person lol... just so used to 3rd person... :P

3rd person actually works better for this kind of pvp game. I remember thinking the same thing when I first played DAOC "they really need a 1st person view like I had with EQ".  And it turned out that 3rd person was better for that game. In fact, now it seems the majority of new titles are 3rd person.

You'll get used to it. And believe me, you'll certainly "be there" when you are unfortunate enough to get fired on from all sides!

• StarcrystalStarcrystal Member Posts: 11

3rd Person view is a must in this game. It makes it easier to analize the situation and to navigate beter.

For the sake of avoiding EXTREME amusement, I will not respond to but one part of your post.

"I got no prove"... "In my opinion EvE is much more better"
Okay... so... you have never played DarkSpace... you have no idea what kind of game it is or how it compares to EvE... in your words "no proof"? Yet you say EvE is much "more" better. So how, pray tell, is EvE better?

Hehe yeah give actual reasons why you think EvE is better. Simply saying you think it's better doesn't help anyone in choosing.

I've never played EvE so I can't comment on it really, but from what I've heard, EvE is a mining afk-fest. You log on, you mine for hours, and that's pretty much it. But it's only what I've heard. I'm inviting you to offer your views on EvE. Tell us how it is and why you feel it's better.

Darkspace is totally different, and my guess is anyone who enjoys EvE's gameplay will NOT enjoy Darkspace's gameplay, and vice versa (with the occasional exception).

Darkspace is based around team pvp. There's no AI to fight (cept gaifens and entities here and there), mining and credits are not a requirement, and there's not much 'afk time' (meaning things that take so much time to do that you can just go afk). Darkspace is heavily combat oriented, but combat is not required. In fact, the most important gameplay aspect is that of capturing enemy planets. That makes it sort of 'capture the flag in space', but it goes SO far beyond that.

So please, tell us where EvE differs in it's gameplay. Don't worry about graphics or anything, just the gameplay. Give us a typical EvE game session. That will help much more than the generic 'I think EvE is better because that's what I think'

• StarcrystalStarcrystal Member Posts: 11

Well ites quite simple, DS is almost entirely PvP. I should say 99.9%.

And it is true, most DS people have never laid a finger on EvE and dont like it out-right (Im one of them), as some people think, or know, that it resembles that as a mining simulator. Which in the first 2 months, ive heard it is.

And probably after mining the game may be fun cause then you can combat, but since DS requires no mining ( though atm it is if you want credits to modify your ships ) we can hop right into a ship that meets our rank and badge requirements (and resource requirements, and the fact you have a shipyard too for anything about frigate ) and go directly into combat, which you do to gain control of the planets that provide the resources and materials neccissary for the bigger ships. Which the combat is aided by supplys and the planets captured by transports. it works in a cycle.

So DS is almost  the entire opposite of EvE, which makes it so that people from EvE dont like DS and people from DS dont like EvE, Though its not an absolute, its about 90% of both games. Not that its MEANt to happen, but id be nice if there was less 'hostility' with the deragatory terms.

Also for those who dont know, DS , unlike most sim games, gives you almost entire control of your ship, from moving, to your speed, to your angle, to your weapons firing.

Palestar doesnt have the money to buy advertisements all over the web.
DS uses Sites like these, a Banner here and there and their players to advertise the game.
And just because you havent heard of it doesnt mean it cant be good ;)

Anyway, Eve is a nice game once you get beyond the whole mining for a week thing.
DarkSpace is Far better though. ::::31::

The only things wrong with this game are:

A. Lag has caused me to crash into planets...many times

B. You can't see physical damage done to your ship (i.e. holes, tiny explosions, and or pieces flying off)

C. The learning curve is, plainly put, I N S A N E!!!!!

I can't tell you how long it took me to find out how to orbit a planet. Then I found out they had a manual at the website...oh well.

D. Smaller ships are far too weak (in my opinion).

Maybe that last one wasn't a very good point. Again, oh well. Try this game. You might find another reason not to leave your house.image

The ships are currently undergoing a rebalancing process, planned for the 1.482 release to address the issues of them bieng weak and to give them a more defined role within the game. Of course they shouldn't stand a chance vs dreadnaughts and cruisers, unless they attack in large numbers. In reality, once you know the capabilities of each ship then staying alive in a combat situation gets a lot easier. The first simple rule for small ships (except Kluth) is to stay more than 250gu away from all enemy vessels. This way they don't have the ability to use their beam weapons on you. It's mostly people getting too close and going too slow that die so often.
