A Rogue is a great solo class in World of WarCraft but be careful what you wish for when you are looking at solo classes because when you get to the endgame Rogue's are rarely invited into Raids.
normally the ranger class is. but of course you need to do reasearch on it because they are very nerfed in some games. (beast mastery, ranged attack, wilderness healing, dagger attacks, traps)
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Any class that can heal and do damage is my favorite. Bards in EQ. Hunters in WoW. Scrappers in Coh. Personally I think Scrappers are the best solo class Ive ever played.
I generally find that theres that one class that can do it. You know THAT class.
The one that can stealth, heal, nuke, tank, and duel greatswords and shoot a bow with his feet and conjour skeletons, and breathe fire, and shoots lasers out of its eyes.

you mean YOUR rogue is rarely invited into raids.
in WoW, most endgame guilds have an over abundance of rogues and thats why it sucks for endgame.
I have played a lot of MMO's and it is usually the Caster classes that have some type of pt ability that solo the best... and that is in GENERAL... sure there are exceptions... but 5 out of the 7 i have played a lot of had pet casters as good solo set up... basically pet casters are a one man group...

I'm sure your rogue is always picked over a Priest, Warrior, Druid, or Mage (
The problem with the Original Post is that the classes may have similar names in some games but have very different functions. In general, the pet classes can solo well, unbuffed and all that crap.
Jack of all trades is usually some sort of melee that can heal.

Depends on the goal. Personally, I like to level fast so I can get the most done in the 10 minutes a day I get to play computer games :-)
So for me, the 'best' class would always be the class that levels the fastest, which means kills-the-fastest. So high DPS. Also, I do not want to be dependant on items (armor/weapons) since getting good armor and weapons implies grouping and doing raids and instances, which takes large blocks of time commitment. So high DPS that is a function of level and not items.
NOW, if you want to make friends and influence people, then you have to be something that every group needs. Every group needs a tank, and a healer. The DPS is easy to pick up, because 90% of a server is filled with people like me who want to level fast...
The opening post is asking two questions actually. The first one in the title and the second question in the actual post. That's how I took since he or she started the second question with "And" as to mean it's an additional question. So those that suggested the pet class as an answer are actually right and did answer the question the OP asked.
I agree the best type of solo classes usually tend to be pet classes no matter what game. That's kind of a standard and I've yet to see any game go against that to be honest.
Jack of all trade type classes would large depend on the game I think cause some games have that while others don't. Either with them they tend to be able to solo but be prepared to move slow and be extremely frustrated. As the phrase suggest they can do a lot but are the master of nothing basically and that is the negative aspect of them. For Everquest 1 it used to be the Bard. For Anarchy Online I think it was the Adventurer class. Not so sure about other games.

Are you asking for every solo class in every MMORPG, or the 'same' class throughout?

Best PVP Solo class is usually Rogues/Assassins characters that can move and stay invisible.
Best PVE Solo classes are usually mage class with a pet.
Best PVE grouping DPS class is Mage.
Best PVP grouping DPS class is a Mage.
Class that is most in demand by other players for groups is Healer/Buffer. And second runner up would be a tank/warrior class.
No matter what game I play it seems the above always is pretty much accurate.
I think on a broad scope, the definitive "solo class" are pet classes.

2nd would be a rogue or a hunter type anything that can either kill fast, or heal themselves.
