Faction Points..?

in Guild Wars
Sorry if this is a dumb question....I fought in an arena for the first
time yesterday and got Faction points, redeemable at a Priest of
Balthazar...what are these points used for, and where can I find a
priest? (I haven't passed the Shiverpeaks yet).

    Battle Isle has priests, points are for unlocking skills, item-bonuses (& heroes if you have Nightfall) for pvp-use.

    As said above you can use faction to unlock skills, heroes, item mods and runes. Such that when you make a pvp character you can use all those things you have unlocked. If you are not interested in pvp you can still use the unlocked skills on your heroes, so there is still a reason to unlock skills.

    Do you mean, I can use the unlocked skills on my heroes (Nightfall
    type), or my main character? Also, can I do PVP with my role playing
    character?

    Yes.. your heroes and pvp chars can use unlocked skills (your pve chars have to buy/get skills by doing a quest etc.).
    With pvp char you can only pvp with pve you can do anything. =]
