A few newbie questions for SL

nakasinakasi Member Posts: 11

Alright so i decided to give SL a go, and i've got a few questions.

1. What is the best* way to make money?

*Hell, tell me how to make money, even if it isn't the best way. i'm a little lost"

2. How do I turn a house deed in my inventory into an actual house?

3. For those that have played WoW/SWG.. Is there an "Auction house/Bazaar"? I've sort of noticed various things from random buildings, but i'm not seeing any stores.

Thanks in advance for answering these questions,

Cheers!

Alright so i decided to give SL a go, and i've got a few questions.

    1. What is the best* way to make money?

Using your strengths to their best advantage.   I know, that's not much of an answer, but it's the truth. image  Let me elaborate.  If you are a gamer who regularly mods games, and if you have artistic skills and skills with photoshop/paintshop pro/gimp, you may do well making clothing and "skins" to sell in game.  If you like architecture, you may like the idea of creating buildings and furniture to resell.   If you're a  programmer, you may like the thought of using the extremely robust LSL scripting language to make interactive objects like vehicles, games, security systems, etc...  If you know how to use Poser or Daz 3d or other programs capable of model animation, you can make custom animations to sell.  Or if you have a business mind, maybe real estate is your thing. Buy land low and sell high(although this requires a moderate cash investment up front to afford the land tier.)

Also if you don't really have any skills and just want to play SL as a social experience, there are games in SL like Slingo, pizza, and Tringo that pay out some nice cash when you win.  you can also sit in camping chairs, which pay you by a preset time period.  a lot of people just camp for cash, as it can be done while you sleep IRL. :P

There really are a lot of possibilities to SL, moreso than the people who have posted in the reviews for the game have shown.  You won't find another game out there that gives you as many options as SL, even the option to convert your game currency to RL money.  I have $200 in my account waiting to be cashed out, and that's just from selling halloween decorations and small things to people.  some people have been known to make enough to survive with SL as their man job.

*Hell, tell me how to make money, even if it isn't the best way. i'm a little lost"

    2. How do I turn a house deed in my inventory into an actual house?

There is no such thing as a house deed.  your inventory contains actual objects, not deeds for them.  so you can just drag an object from your inventory into the world, and poof it's there.  it's best to go to a sandbox, which is an area where people who don't own land can go and build.  to have a permanent house somewhere, you need land of your own, or you need to rent land from someone who will let you build there.  In the case of owning your own, you need to be a premium member and need to buy a spot of land.  land costs upfront, and also you need to make sure you are in the correct "tier" for land.  the more land you own, the higher your teir, which means the more you pay each month.  I for instance own 32k meters of land, which is half a sim. and I pay $125 just for that each month, in addition to the monthly fee for being a premium member(9.99 when paid monthly).

Another option is renting land. a *LOT* of people are making their money now by buying land and renting it on a weekly basis to others.  for all intents and purposes, you can do the same things on land you rent as that you own when it comes to building. there are some things you can't do such as eject people from the land or change the URL for music/video, but a lot of landowners put down objects that allow you to do that despite the fact you're not the land owner.

    3. For those that have played WoW/SWG.. Is there an "Auction
house/Bazaar"? I've sort of noticed various things from random
buildings, but i'm not seeing any stores.

unfortunately, no.  However SL contains a very robust search mechanism to allow you to find what you need.

Here's what you do:  click the search button on the bottom toolbar, and go to the "classified" tab.  type in "mall" to start and seach for it. you'll see a lot of malls, which are shops owned by one person, but rented out to many other resellers.  it's a good start.  from there, you can search for properties directly.  search is going to be your best friend for finding places.  a lot of people have their own storefronts, and there are some very large and very popular malls out there worth visiting.  it's just a matter of finding them.

Thanks in advance for answering these questions,

    Cheers!

I hope that info helps. if you have and further questions, just PM me or post a response to this thread.

I agree with the comments bodyart makes. Just wander around SL, looking at the buildings, furniture, clothes in shops, and reflect on the fact that everything you're looking at has been made by residents like yourself. If you do want to make things head to The Ivory Tower. A few hours in there and you'll become comfortable with the building tools. I found SL quite intuitive. It's just a case of approaching it in the right frame of mind. As I said elsewhere, it's not really a game, there are no set goals, and very few limits. It's in its infancy right now.

two other good way to get money is this:

    1. on the map search for 'money tree'
    2. teleport to this location and there will be a tree (DUH) and a box with donate on it. This is because money trees create money fruit to be exchange for money. These trees are run by other players like slot machince and camping chairs (see bellow) therefore they encourage you to donate to them.
    3. Right click on the donation box and click copy, a copy will appear in your inventory.
    4. Create as man y copies as you want then drag on out of your inventory to wherever. It will appear exactly the same with one difference, because the copy is yours donations go to you.
    5. This dosent get you much money but it does work.
    6. you can also hang around the money tree and look for fruit

The other way is search for 'camping chairs'. once you get a hit find an empty chair with something like 'camping chair' written in green and sit in it. you will get X no. of linden dollars over a period of X minutes. the most common ones are 3 per 10 mins. this is greate if you can stay on for a long time. but be warned it automatically logs you out after 30mins of inactivity.

Hope This Helps if you have any problems post a reply!image

There are a couple of ways to make LINDEN (money) in SL.

If you can learn to make (and sell) items like clothing, hair, jewelry etc.

One person has make tons of RL money by being very successfull buying/selling real estate, something on the order of $150,000 real US Dollars per year.

But if you're poor, not into taking the time to learn how to make things to sell, you can always work in a club, as Security, DJ, Dancer, Stripper, Escort.
