Hero Online Dev Chat

I participated in the Xfire Hero Online developer chat on
Wed. Here is my recap of the session.

I rewrote many of the questions due to them being hard to understand. The answers are paraphrased because they repeated themselves often.

There were 2 GMs present Geno and Scott.

Q: When will Faction Wars be released?

A: Faction Wars are still in beta. The stress testing has
gone normally. They have a good idea of what things they want to change but
have not set a date yet.

Q: Will there be a spam filter?

A: They are aware of these problems and there are plans that
they are currently working on.

Q: Did any parts of the game not turn out as envisioned?

A: They feel that the bounty system is too easy to take
advantage of. Two players can cooperate to commit suicide and split the gold.

Q: Do they think they can compete with WoW? What sets Hero
Online apart?

A: They do not intend to compete with WoW. Their game is set
apart by the fighting and animation style.

Q: What is combat like? Is there auto-attack?

A: Both auto and single attack exist. This can be toggled
with F.

Q: Will there be more in game events?

A: They are working on the current story/guide events. It is
taking a while to judge winners in the contests.

Q: Will there be an official guide to strengthening and
composing items?

A: They praised the current player created guides and
indicate that there are a few guides being worked on in house.

Q: Is the game solo or party oriented?

A: They believe that partying is part of making social
connections and networking. Partying is preferred and is a must for taking down
the 12 demons.

Q: Will there be further customization options or new classes
available?

A: Customization is being worked on. Most new items will be
made available as premium items. No new classes have been announced.

Q: Describe your game to non-MMoers

A: The game is set in ancient China. In the game you learn and
master a style of martial arts. You choose a house for faction vs faction
competition. Players can participate in love storylines, random quests, and the
main storyline that focuses on the 12 demons.

Q: Will there be a Chinese New Year event?

A: It is possible. They seemed to like the idea.

Q: What will you be doing about bots?

A: They are on the lookout and are doing their best.

Q: Can you give us a hint to the future plans for the game?

A: What you have seen is just the tip of the iceberg. There
are many new and exciting things to come.

Q: Many players feel that blacksmith failure is a problem,
will there be a way to learn your chance of success percentage?

A: They are aware of the blacksmith problem and are often
frustrated by it themselves. They have no plans to show success chance but
there will be an item that keeps the original item from being destroyed.

Q: Will there ever be WASD movement?

A: They say that out of a poll of 100,000 people only 300
wanted WASD movement. Note: They did not say if this poll was held in the U.S. or Korea.

Q: Will they be adding quests or maps?

A: Yes

Q: Will there be a revamp of the second job skill for
warrior?

A: They are aware of the problems with the warrior class. It
is being looked at but there is no date set.

Q: Were they influenced by any movies, like Crouching Tiger
Hidden Dragon?

A: They were not so much influenced by the movies as by the
moves in the movies.

Q: Is the current level cap permanent? Will there be an
endgame advancement system available like EQ’s AA system? Is it possible that
there could be lateral advancement or a remort available?

A: 100 is a hard level cap. Remorting is a possibility for
the future. “How would the game be affected if one were to plateau then move
beyond that? What kind of power could you obtain then?”

Q: What was their main art style inspiration?

A: They were influenced by ancient Chinese battles. (I think
they misunderstood the question)

Q: Why do we start with weapons that we cannot use?

A: So you can see the H2H combat animation no matter what
class.

Q: Can strengthen fail even with 3 items?

A: Yes it can always fail.

Q: When will new content be available?

A: No date ha been set.

Q: How do fortune boxes work?

A: They are a game of chance. You can sell them for a set
price or risk gold for a bigger reward.

Q: How long has Hero Online been in development?

A: The game has been out in Korea for about a year and a half.
As Korea
develops updates they will translate them.

Q: Will something be done to even up the war effort so that
the sides are even?

A: Perhaps an item that would allow you to switch sides.
Downside is that all the players might switch to the winning faction.

Q: What is the typical translation time for a Korean game?

A: There is no typical time.

Q: Will people who do not buy premium items be unable to
compete?

A: No but they will level slower. The tavern items are PvE
centric not PvP.

Q: What is involved in the translation process?

A: They keep the dialogue and story as close as possible but
the names are not changed.

Q: When bugs are reported what do you do?

A: They investigate the bugs and make a bug report back to
the devs in Korea.

Q: What is the expanded inventory screen for?

A: This is for items that are worn above your armor. They
add to your stats, especially resists and HP/Chi.

Q: Is there a player ranking system?

A: No but there is a guild ranking system.

Q: Are there level limits on PvP?

A: In the main PvP areas, like Mudo, you are not attackable
under level 20. Faction Wars does contain 41-59 and 60+ areas.

Q: Can you extract from wild drop items?

A: No.

Q: Could you limit the number on one side in Faction Wars to
prevent the other side from becoming outnumbered?

A: This is a good suggestion they will send it to Korea.

Q: Do mounts have a 4th evolve?

A: There are many new things that will be implemented soon.
You never know.

Q: When will dueling be implemented?

A: The dueling button in closed beta was a translation
error. There are no plans for dueling.

Q: Will Faction Wars be weekly?

A: Yes. If they had their way they would be every few hours.

Q: Are there plans to include DirectX 10 or a 64 bit OS?

A: No

Q: Are there plans for new pets?

A: Yes but no date.

Q: Will there be a system for guild alliances and an
alliance chat channel?

A: There is a system in the works that will allow for an
umbrella faction.

Q: Will there be a web based character profile system?

A: There are no plans for this. Many people want their
builds to be secret.

Q: Will Hero Online always be free?

A: Yes

Does anyone give a crap about Hero Online ?

No, in fact people who have played it seem to want a refund.

It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

I play Hero for like 2 hours a week, then it's boring me again. But the quests are great!

This is so much BS, its obvious they cannot/will not code it in fear of increasing bot problems. Also I really doubt 100k people actually voted but instead used how many registered accounts there are.

Do they still have giant blinking text (that cannot be removed) from premium users spamming?

Sorry I didn't realize there was a Hero Online specific forum (not on the main tree to the left) when I posted this. I reposted it there. I only played Hero Online after being invited to the chat to get ready for it so I have no comment on if people care about it.

I will remember not to offend you with news about MMOs that are in open beta on this open beta forum on MMORPG.com again.

You didn't offend anyone. People just don't like the game because of it's lack of creativity, is all. Also, the movement systems, the battle systems, and lack of strategy, make the game for children.
