Marvel Universe Online: The coh/cov killer?

I just saw a little trailer on Marvel Universe Online and it didnt really give to much details, but it does mention something about having control of one of the characters from the Marvel Universe.  Im not sure if anyone else heard any information, but what do you guys think, you think that it will topple coh/cov?  Not sure whos developing it but Marvel is a huge name so im sure its going to get alot of backing.

No, it won't topple CoH/V.  If you play as an Actual Marvel Character that would be really really lame.  How many Wolverines would be too many?  People like CoH/V because you can create your very own hero or villian and play it out.  You do see some people here and there trying to mimic certain Marvel and Dark Horse characters, but thats just a few fanboys and girls.  I seriously doubt you would see a huge flux in numbers on the game.  People are getting tired of WoW and coming back to the game so that should say something.

Seeing as the creators of City of Heroes and City of Villains will be working on Marvel, it makes me wonder if the company realizes that their games have already hit their peak and with the not to far gone lawsuit they had going against them from Marvel that it is time to jump ship and work on something with a larger fanbase.

As a new player in CoH, I am disappointed to see Cryptic involved.  Coming from a large corporation, these types of ironies and conflicts of interest should not be overlooked.  I guess we will see if CoH goes stale or if it continues to improve.

Well the game hit its peak a long time ago, plus this Marvel game is not gonna be out for a long time.

Nah, its boring to play as someone elses super hero. Plus there are dozens of other games you get to do that. Marvel Ultimate Alliance anyone?  (Plus if Cryptic was smart, they would still make the game slightly worse then their games )

if you have to pick an already established superhero then I can see it going nowhere.

The way I see it either:

    A. Cryptic really thinks that only Marvel fans will play MUO

    B. MUO will be so next gen/x-box-y that only 133T computer dudes will be able to play it, thus leaving the lower end computer market to CoH/V

    C. CoH/V is loosing money, and Cryptic has taken on this to fund their pet project.

Anyway you slant it, Cryptic is awsome. Rather than be slain by their competition, they've become their compitition. CRYPTIC FTW!!!

I'm rather confused by this move from Cryptic. The MMO sub-genre of superheroes only appeals to so many people, and either Cryptic has no idea what they're doing, or they're trying to turn Marvel Universe into CoH 2.0 and topple the original. In any case, it makes no sense. I don't see a lot of good coming from this, but then again, I'm a pessimist.

How is Criptic losing money with 171k players???? same number EQ2 have and much more than many other games.

Their prime time befour CoV was 162.922 players, city of vilanis hit stores and they got 194k players, now they are stable with 171k,this is bad?after 3 years they are losing money with more costumers?

    I dont think so.

Other way nervax, CCP, and many other smaler companies wold be bancrupted.

NCsoft had financial problems because Auto Assaut.Btw Lineage2 only have 83.221 players in EU/US so CoX is more profitable than this game to NCsoft America.

BTW people, correct me if I'm wrong. It doesn't say what kind of an MMO it's going to be. It could very well be an action mmorpg which falls under the mmofps genre and doesnt necessarily compete with CoV aka mmorpgs.

All I saw on the news story was MMO.

They are useing the Cryptic engine, so it cant stray to far from COx with a marvel skin.

I guess this defines the next gen Superhero MMO fight: DC/SOE vs Marvel/cryptic/MS

Let the posturing of fanbois and haters begin!!!

The method there using is genius and as old as time. By making another product similar to another they already have there expanding a genre and maintaining control. The new product expand exposure to the Hero Genre and hopefully it makes other companies want to make competiting products. Seen it done several times by other companies and it works. In anycase we wont know tell later how it goes.

To all those who think this game is going to be comprised of you picking an existing character and playing as him/her:

I think this game will be similar to SWG in the sense that you may be in an old universe, but you are a new person yourself, and you get to interact with superheroes from Marvel, and travel to their cities and such.  I'd imagine you'd still get to create your own character, and maybe you can even use some different powers seeing as some may have been copywritten?

    This is just speculation though...

Hmm While I will probably check out this MMO when/if it ever come out, Cryptic's move is surprising.  Cannibalizing your own system is not normally a way to Increase your base.

This is the eventual end of COH. Cryptic developed COH and now it's doing MUO. What this means is that basically, MUO = COH 2.

I presume they will continue to support it the way that SOE supports EQ 1, but all the effort in creating lots of "new stuff" will be shifted bit by bit into their MUO development, and COH will just be "maintained", with perhaps the occasional small content publish to keep people interested.

A great example of this is the boxed expansion for 2007, which was announced... and then rescinded. My guess is, they decided it would be wiser to just use their dev resources to work MUO, not build a massive expansion for what will by then be a 3 year old game.

You and me both, Ill prob get the game to late and be stuck with aquaman.  There were some good details in your posts but it just seems to unrealistic to have ppl playing all the same characters.  Like others, I think it will just clone Coh/Cov with all the marvel elements.  Im thinking all the superheroes will just be npcs ingame.

All these "The (current MMO) killer!" threads that people make are retarded.

Also, Marvel Universe will likely be somewhat gimped.

I highly doubt they'll actually let players be any of the famous superheroes like X-men, Spiderman, or what have you. Because everyone will want to be the same few guys, and nobody can be trusted not to be Wolverine and not run around acting like a 'tard.

If anything, the Marvel heroes will likely be standing around as NPCs who give you missions, which is retarded. Rather than go help people, the fantastic four are going to stand around and drink coffee while they tell noob heroes to go handle it.

I dont think this game will be much different than CoH.I think Cryptic will just repackage CoH into a marvel setting.

That said, if they dont.If they actaully make a decent game this time.It could be very cool.

What i'd like to see them do is a powers/skill based game that uses a point buy system and lets the players REALLY design their own hero.Where players arent limited by lame classes.

And that the Marvel heroes will be fighting along side the players.

So that Player A will get a mission in some way, and that mission will be to fight alongside a marvel hero/group of marvel heroes to stop a marvel villains evil plan.

Like that old marvel comic that each issue was a team-up of 2 or more heroes.

Oh and make it more action oriented.Iron man didnt need to stop moving and stand still everytime he used his repulsers. The players shouldnt have to either.
