EVE-Online: Top Rated and GETTING BETTER!!

The current build is called Castor, went in a couple weeks before Christmas.  Next update, called Shiva, is due Soon(tm) and will implement player-owned structures.  Mobile refineries, player built stations, and much much more.  Moreover, they are introducing an official alliance structure system, much like the corporation system, where an alliance will have officer positions, etc.  War and player altered standings are getting a massive overhaul - as of right now wars are based on corporations, but once the new alliance system goes live, wars will be declared alliance-wide.

I am a very creative guy but I have to admit, some of the solutions that the developers come up with to problems that crop up are absolutely brilliant.  The best part is that on the forums, the developers will float ideas or propositions and get extensive feedback and new ideas from the playerbase.  They are VERY interactive with their playerbase.  That to me is the most impressive thing.

I play EVE right now and love it.  I am in law school and have LOTS of work, can't powergame like many of the people I play with.  However, EVE has many different career paths --- I started out as a pirate and pvp combat specialist and it began to consume all my time.  I changed to science and research and development - this is a career easily sustainable by working adults!  VERY VERY happy about that change!!!

Today, moreover, saw the largest number of users simultaneously logged in!  Over 6,400 in the same gaming world!!  Amazing!  Keep up the good work, CCP!

    EVE ROXXOR in Graphics....

Other than that I have no comment since I've only tried it only for ~4 hours.

My first impression was that its interface was a little too complicated.

Then again EVE has some amazing talents who are working for the title. It deserves respect.

EVE.. artificially inflated by EVE players coming over here and spamming the ratings list.

You think we don't know what you're up to?

You people lose all credibility when you pull stunts like that.. and then you have the nerve to come in here and run your mouths like you did nothing screwy. I hope they disable the ratings system permanently because of people like you.

no kidding i would not be surpised if these guys giving this games good reviews were pulling a SWG and giving other games bad reviews while giving its own good reviews by the devs.....SHAME

I beta tested EVE and decided not to buy it when it was released because the game wasn't ready for release. So a few weeks ago I bought it just to see if anything was changed and today I canceled my account because, quite frankly, the game is boring. The agent missions are all the same get this here, take it there or go there and kill that type. Mining is boring. Manufacturing is boring. Skill gaining is boring. Combat is boring. Traveling is boring. AI is non existant. PvP is boring. Not to mention that I hate games where you have no direct control of your character.

I might comeback if they ever reintroduce custom color schemes for the ships. Although I doubt it. Hopefully by then I will be having fun in WoW.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the market is FUBAR'D.

To the troll posting eve sucks and went down in price and blablabla.
Why we have reached a new server RECORD yesterday then.
    Playerbase is increasing!
There's no MMORPG out there having more players. Yeah that's right.
Sure EQ and FF XI have 500k+ psubscribers but none of those have 6.4k players (soon even more) one ONE server.
Btw:i only reviewd it way back ONCE and gave it the rating it deserves, No stupid 10 for everything like a lot ppl do.

Ok, with all this who haa going on about EVE, i had to check it out for myself.

1st thing, no free monthly trial. So that kinda hurt. I just wanted to test it out but instead im paying like i've already played the game a month. (Still it's not a given that every mmorpg is willing to give away a free month's service).

Character Creation: WoW. No other game has allowed such diversification in the appearance of their character. 3D rendering tools and colour tones are just some of the features.

Learning Curve: There is a built in Tutorial that takes you through the steps of EVE Online. Very well organised touching all the major aspects of the game, with even a step by step guide on how to complete each tutorial/mission. There was only 1 mission i completed where i wasn't awarded what i was said to receive and made not of it for the devs. Otherwise its a very good tool for the "noob" to the game.

Graphics: Best I have seen to date on ANY mmorpg. What everyone says is true about this game's graphical superiority. The indepth colour schemes and textures are very well balanced accordingly with "space".

Leveling: There is no leveling treadmill of such. You Aquire a new skill either by research or purchase and then issues a "training" order. A timer then ticks over IRT (in real time) untill complete. So even when not logged into the game your still learning the skill. (Kool feature) As the level's of skill increase. so does the timer.

Gameplay: Being space you can definately find yourself a quiet spot and pick your nose if you want to, or head on over to the of the more populated mining sectors or "pirate" areas for a little more excitement. Combat is fairly simple, depending on the class of your ship and how many goodies it has. Target, Lock, Shoot.

Maping: This blew me away by far. The mapping system and automated control of destination (autopillot between systems) is just awesome. Indepth solasystem navigation and detail of routes and waypoints possible. Options to avoid hazerdous areas. They really outdid themselves here.

I'm still investigating the corperate aspect of the game (guilds), but i spoke with a lot of people that had played with the beta of EVE Online and they made the point that A LOT has changed since the beta was released and why they came back to play.

I'm enjoying the game so far. For those who did experience the beta and didn't like it, i would suggest at least taking another look at it now and see for yourself.

Overnight EVE received about 200 votes (totaling near 600 at the time), as did many other high-ranked MMORPG's. This resulted in EVE pulling a full point away from everything else. So yes, a buttload of people (or just a few with numerous accounts) came and made sure EVE would get wayyy up there by giving it 10's in all categories, and other games 0's. I know this because I was paying close attention to the list at the time, and was flabbergasted one day I logged in, at the change from the day before. EVE is not the first game this has been done to, but it is by far the biggest (numerically) stunt of those pulled so far.

This will be fixed soon, so that stunts like that aren't possible anymore, but until then, the rating system is worth diddly-squat to be honest.

/edit Way to go with the imminent changes to the rating system, admin dude. :D

  • AdminAdmin Administrator RarePosts: 5,623

That will all be changing VERY soon...like in a matter of hours :)

Our new rating system is being installed now and we are purging "fly-by" member ratings...

Considering the effort put into cleaning up the ratings system, I'm suprised a system hasn't been implemented to cleanse the forum of trolls.  Eve did in fact have 6400 players logged on at once.  If that isn't enough of an accomplishment for you guys, I don't know what is.  There are a great deal of people who enjoy the game.  If you don't like Eve, that is your own experience and opinion, and nobody can tell you what to think or feel.  Say why you don't like the game.  Don't say something inflammatory like 'THIS GAME SUCKS' or 'WORST GAME EVER'.  Its immature and makes me wonder why I even bother visiting this site.

  • heartlessheartless Member UncommonPosts: 4,993

Yes EVE did have 6400 players logged in once... and? What's the big deal? UO has more players playing it this very moment than EVE does. So does EQ and Taiwan beta of Lineage II had 14 servers last time I checked and 11 of them were full.

I don't doubt that there is a great deal of people enjoying EVE. As a matter of fact, I was one of those people until the game got boring. There are also many people who find the game boring and pointless. If you like EVE that is your own experience and opinion and nobody can tell you what to think or feel. However, that does not give you the right to spam these forums with your EVE propaganda and cheat on the polls. It's immature and makes me wonder why you even bother visiting this site.

Well, we certainly don't visit this sight for bogus ratings on mediocre games.  As for the 6400 person server population... big deal. That doesn't make the game fun. I wonder what percentage of those people are only playing because they came to this site and saw the game had a 1 point ratings lead over everything else in the field. That kind of takes the wind outa your sails doesnt it.

I played Eve in beta, and I didn't buy it. I didn't buy it because I found myself countless times wandering around my house, or reading a magazine, or cleaning, watching TV, all while playing Eve. I don't play video games to give me something to do while I watch TV. To me a video game needs to be engrossing, captivating. I need emersion into my game, and Eve in no way provided that for me.

I am glad you enjoy this game, but the ratings slant really sickens me, I can't believe the Eve developement team would stand for its fanbase misrepresenting its product.

Kudos to the MMORPG.com staff for rectifying this fraudulence.

  • vfrexvfrex Member Posts: 14

You guys are upholding a double standard.  I have a question: did you rate the game based on your opinion of it from beta?  Is that valid at this point in time?  Why should it be included in modern rankings?

" I can't believe the Eve developement team would stand for its fanbase misrepresenting its product."

You make it sound like the eve devs were in on it.  It was a group of immature eve fanbois.  I'm not supporting the actions of people artificially inflating rankings.  But I am also calling for an end to senseless flaming as well.

  • heartlessheartless Member UncommonPosts: 4,993

I actually did not rate EVE, though I beta tested it. I also just cancelled my EVE account after playing it for a few weeks again. Thus if I so choose I can rate it based on the present state of the game.

After initial release I refused to buy EVE because it was boring and so filled with bugs that it made AO's launch look stable. After hearing about the castor patch, I've decided to download the game and try it out. It was only $20, no big deal. After a few weeks of playing I have to say that the devs did a great job of fixing most of the game stopping bugs but the game is still boring, pointless and the market is FUBAR'D. You can't even have a decent fleet battle because the server starts to lag. What ever happened to being able to support hundreds of thousands of players or to the solar systems that could support atleast 1000 people?

Though my biggest gripe with EVE, by far, are the point and click controls. The game would've been so much better if the player had direct control of the ship.

actually yes...it is valid to rate the game in beta..especially towards the end.  If it is something say like SWG when nearly the whole beta population felt that it should not be put on the shelves you should rate it accordilngly.  Remember beta is the final testing before production release.  If it isn't good in beta (not speaking of bugs, but fun factor) then you can be pretty well sure its going to be a horrid game when it hits the shelves.

And besides, like it or not, people do try to "win" massively multiplayer RPGs. The rules of engagement are something like this:
    * If there is a status bar, make it grow bigger
    * If there is a number, make it higher
    * If it moves, either get a mission from it or kill it

"actually yes...it is valid to rate the game in beta..especially towards the end."

image  If you think that ratings dating back to beta are STILL valid in a game that has shifted and changed since release, especially a game that MANY people state suffered from a premature release, you are delusional.  It is NOT valid, no more valid than fanbois jumping in and rating it with 10's for the hell of it today.
