How many are not actually "playing":

ValiumSummerValiumSummer Member Posts: 1,008

I'm wonderin how many people might just be keeping thier account(s) active and logging on only to train thier character(s).

For this I have to give Kudos to CCP, because this is the only game to my knowledge that allows you to trian offline which as a by product keeps suscription numbers higher.    I know for a fact I would have cancelled a couple weeks ago were it not for the chance that I might get the itch to play it again.

I just log on every other day or so to check skill trains.   My plan is to start playing again when winter approaches (my hours usually get cut from 60+ hours per week for the summer months to about 24-30 for the winter).  Or to cancel by then if I don't feel the urge or found a new addiction.

This is one of eve's best points. If you need to take a break you can with out falling behind. You don't need to be hard core to keep up. And as for logging in every two days to check on a skill well I'm lovingg that fact that some skills require a month because at the moment I dont have time to play so I set cruse lancher 5 to train (33days) and when I get back into the game I'm be able to use some very nice T2 cruise launchers. Yarrrr!!

It is an incredible "win win" both for CCP and for the player.    CCP gets the loot of the monthly subscription and you aren't even putting any stress on thier server.    You on the other hand can train while you are on the family trip to Florida.

Any other game you might cancel for a month or two (or more) or not buy a game card etc.

training doesnt stop if you canccel your account, it keaps going (untill you nead to change skills).

so you could put BS lvl 5 on, let you account run out, then reactivate it ain 1-2 months time wiht BS lvl 5 fully train up

I generally take a formal "break" from EVE once every several months ... 2 or 3 times a year ... for about 3-4 weeks usually.  I find it helps recharge my batteries, and give me some perspective (I've been playing since March 2004), and makes me a more valuable corp director when I return.  One of those breaks is usually over the summer, when we notice fewer people playing EVE (and games in general).  EVE's system facilitates this, you are correct, but as pointed out elsewhere in this thread, you can actually suspend your subscription and your character will finish training the skill they were set to train, whether that ends after the sub period ends or not.  So it's not necessary to maintain your sub if you can train something that takes a long time (a favourite for this is Battleship to level 5, which with good learning skills still takes 40-50 days to train).

The best addiction is when you have your ***** avatar who has gathered 350k RP without winning any T2 and each month you hope that you will win at the lottery and you just can't cancel because there is a little tiny voice in your head saying "what if you win on the next month, after all more RPs more chances..."

That's like Casinos, you always say "ok, this will be the last try but I'm sure I'm gonna win the jackpot on this one"

Those CCP boys must be laughing their bollocks off at people like you, how does it feel to be giving them money for free?

Just imagine the charities that could benefit from $15 a month...

Ummmm... nobody asked you to call them stupid.  People can pay and play anyway the choose.  Please go shove your right thumb up your ass and your left one in your mouth... they way, you're busy, can't type, and can't speak.  Win win for everybody... like Eve's skill tree!

My best friend does it.  He's into CoV atm (don't ask... I honestly can't explain why), but wants to fly a Carrier in Eve.  So, he's training to the Carrier while playing CoV.  He figures, by the time he's bored with CoV... he'll be able to fly the Carrier.  Personally, I think its moot to train to a skill you won't e able to use until you get the money/minerals to actually buy/build the ship, but... at least he'll have the skills to do what he wants.

We can agree to disagree, or we can bicker constantly... either way, I'm right.

I never called him stupid, but you have to admit giving a company money for nothing is pretty stupid, or maybe you are also too far gone to see that...

They're training skills.  They're still playing the game.  They're just not staying on.  Do you need it simpler?

Under that reasoning, if I go and play any other game than EVE all the time, I'm wasting money. At least in EVE I progress even when I want to take a break. If I were to take a break from WoW for a few weeks, and still want to play later, I wouldn't be advancing at all. So who is the stupid one?

I never keep a subscription active for a game I don't play. This one is no exception. The focus point is in my main. If I delete it, I won't be back. If I just can the account, the options are open. If I come back and my main isn't there, I won't stay.

It is good that we can train offline. CCP have some good features in this game, this is one of them. It's just not my intention to pay for something I don't play and skilling up isn't playing.

Name another MMOG with a massive playerbase whose devs are still humble enough that theyll take AN HOUR of their time at e3 to have a beer with you, one of 150000 subscribers, just because you asked.

I've seen suggestions I and my buddies made for new content implemented. I've seen players balance concerns addressed and corrected. I've seen Devs joining in on humour and trends on the forums.

The reason we don't mind paying CCP $15 a month even when we are on holiday is that they arnt some faceless SOE beauros, they (not just the devs, but the accountants, the managers) play the game and they care.

CCP is by far and wide, the greatest gaming company out there.  Despite those that will argue, there is no argument.  Thusly, people have no problem paying the $15 a month.  Why?  Cause it's only $15 and it's going to friends instead of the "Blizzard/SOE Response Machine."

Keeping my account active allows me to continue training my character.  I'm not paying the company money for "nothing".

I recently donated $150 to the national breast cancer foundation.

I don't get allowance.   I get a paycheck.   15 bucks is no big thang.   I have 4 accounts that I'm training if you want to get technical.

    Any other questions?

Only empire space players do this to a large degree. In 0.0 space people tend to be more active

To a larger degree I agree with you, but sometimes things get slow even in 0.0. Right now my alliance isn't fighting anyone and the pirates are running pretty thin so I signed up for a free 14 day trial to autoassault. Hopefully by the end the trial things will pick back up and it will be business as usual. I really like the fact though that I can go play and enjoy something else, and not have my progression affected one bit. Not having to grind is a wonderful thing. Eve's dynamic skill system lets me step back without loosing any ground at all.

Offline training in EVE is an awesome feature for both the player and CCP.

As with most games I occasionaly take breaks from EVE Online.  It seems about every 4-6 weeks I'll take a 1-2 week break.  I've done this with almost every MMO I've played.   In EVE I am able to progress my characters skills during these breaks away from the game.

The time spent ingame is to further your assets and aquisition.  Sure, you can be offline for months and have decent skills although if you're not playing the game you're not going to be able to outfit your ships let alon buy them.

Just imagine the charities that could benefit from $15 a month...

I do donate $15 a month to a charity, I call it EVE Online, and the charity is the CCP Beer Fund. I think its a worthwhile endeavor, keep the devs drunk and they will be less likely to nerf something.

Sure you can train skills and not play but at some point oyu need too make isk to buy those expensive skills which some cost a couples millions and more , so at some point you DO need to play the game to buy more skills to train up .

I have a feeling alot of peoples just try hate Eve because it has high ranking on this site , they just try and find a flaw or anything let just accept that eve is well made game by a highly respected company  now .

  • belonnabelonna Member Posts: 67
