Indeed. I smell a 2007 beta period, followed by a 2008 release... and that is being generous.

I'm ok with these current newsletters as long as they don't follow suit with the old ones and come out every 3-4 months. Since these newsletters simply contain roleplay info and no development information, I trust Icarus can crank them out much faster and not worry about their content as much. Occasional development info would still be appreciated though

The thought of a path "littered with porn" reminds me of Las Vegas. Anyone else been there and experienced this phenomenon? There are little call-girl cards EVERYWHERE. They look like a trading card except instead of a famous sports player, its a prostitue and her phone number. People get paid to put these things in the most obscure places. I guess that kind of litter is easier to put up with than say food wrappers and other trash...

Have to say im still crossing my fingers for a summer Beta. Few of us have been saying that for a while, so, could still happen. Anything before that would have just been very wishful thinking and dreaming on our parts anyway.

(Note, that's just a guess, a 'feeling' if you will. I have no specific reason to think the beta would be summer!)

I concur 2007... late 2007, or even so far as early 2008... is what I feel the probable release date will be. As for beta, being that beta's are usually 6 months out from the final release, unless you work for the Auto Assault crowd in which case that is more like 24 months, I would say beta would be early 2007.

 

For 2006, I would say not to expect much here. WoW still has a strangle grip on the MMORPG genre and there are a bunch of new games coming down in the post-WoW period of 2006, so I suppose from a marketing point of view 2007 would be a better year for these guys. Besides, once Auto Assault implodes from the boredom induced "Blow crap up" game-play though until the end of 2006, there will be a LOT of players FE can pick up in 2007.

I honestly doubt that Icarus gives a leaping frogs crap about wow or Auto Assult. SWG and Eve (both even being the same genre game) came out in the same year. Why would you draw the conclusion that one devolper would wait for after another companies game is already out? More logic would dictate that if they wanted to be truely competitive they would not wait for players to join another game. Once I was in SWG I was in it for 2.5 years. Why would a dev not want to compete with other companys. What you wrote makes no sense to me at all.

I totally understand the idea behind marketing. Thats exactly what I am saying. Why would they want to release their game after several other hit the market and possibily lose players because of a release date after several other, much well known, hyped and advertised games hit the market.

My guess is that they are a lot closer to release than they are saying. I almost expect one day to peek at their site and see a forum and a beta sign up that will happen maybe a month or 2 later. At the same time I don;t want them to rush but we are talking about a game thats been in dev since what 2001? I think we may see that beta sooner than next year.

Yes, I can see what you're saying. The game has been in development since 2001, however, there is a very understandable reason behind that. Good sources (very good) told me that they basically started the company ground up just for this game. It is their first. They started with a VERY small team and have only been adding people as they've needed them. Also, i think it's been maid public that they are self funded.

It's hard to speculate a release date, but based on what we've seen, I would doubt that we will see a beta sooner then later... Although, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

also just wanted to comment on how a fairly safe assumption turned into a three page forum discussion since the word porn was added

Yes I get this too... dont misunderstand. I am not upset at the time they are taking. I encourage them to take as long as they need. I would prefer that rather than deal with a crappy bug filled game just because people are putting pressure on them to kick it out too early...
