Questions from a Rookie

_Thrill__Thrill_ Member Posts: 2

Hi there, I'm trying out EVE because of all I've heard about its PvP system... and I just have a few basic questions, sorry if they've been covered before, but from searching the first few pages of this forum I didn't see anything like I was looking for.

Anyway,

One of my concerns is the fact that skills are learned in real time. Now, I'm more than willing to put in the work if the reward is great, but, if for all my work I don't really get anywhere, forget that. If I put in a reasonable amount of time, will I be able to compete with people who have been playing since release? I want to PvP, and I want my skill to be the deciding factor, not the amount of time I've played.

I know its FFA PvP, probably based around guilds (corporations?). What does this PvP consist of? I like the fact that there's full looting after kills (or so I've read). I also like the consequences... your ship blows up, that's it. A lot of work could potentially be set back there, and I like that risk :) If we play a game with no risk, where's the fun? What does this PvP consist of? Do people fight over galaxies, solar systems, asteroid belts, stuff like that?

My main worry is that I'll work hard to get my avatar geared for PvP, only to find that my ship, my skills, or what have you have no chance and I'll be stomped by the people who've been playing for years and years. Will this be the case, or will I be able to make a mark and exist in EVE's PvP world?

Thanks in advance,

Thrill.

If you put in a reasonable amount of time, and focus on the skills needed to PvP you will be able to compete with people who haev played since release easily. One thing they will be better than you though is in experience, and only time will give you that.

It is FFA PvP. Full stop. You can PvP against anyone you want (in 0.4 security systems or below). You can do this solo or in groups (called gangs) or in huge fleets. You can do this as part of a war against a guild (called a corporation ) or against groups of Corporations (Called Alliances).

There is full looting, with the proviso, that you get to loot what is not blown up during the engagement. Blowing a ship up is, of course, the main part of this, but then you can go even further and blow up the escape capsule (called a pod) thus not only blowing up the ship, but going even further and killing the player. It does hurt both financially, and in teh time it could potentially take you to recover. However there are ways to minimise this pain.

People fight over almost anything in EvE. It can be a nasty place, but balancing that it is also one of the most helpful of places. You won't fully understand this until you enter the game in all honesty. The most "hardcore" of the PvP is usually fought over by Alliances, who vie for control over a region of 0.0 space. The size of the region varies. Corps tend to fight over smaller sections of space. It is a bit complicated as the possibilities are really the extent of your power, influance, and so on.

The more you put in, the more you will get out of it. To begin with, just learn the game, and read the main forums for advice on PvP. As you settle in, join a Corp who specialise in PvP, who can show you the ropes. After a bare minimum of time (like 2 weeks) if your in the right corp you can activley take part in PvP, and be really effective in your role. This will usually be as a tackler. (think "rooting" class in other types of games, but this isn't really accurate) Most PvP these days will not involve a 1v1 scenario. It is a few ships taking on one ship (possibly a Cruiser and a few frigs taking out a Battleship) or some pirates taking out a lone hauler. Or maybe 50v50 type engagements, with all sorts of ships used. Each ship plays a role in PvP, all have their uses if you get the right skills and fit the ship correctly.

    Thanks in advance,

    Thrill.

Your welcome, I hope I have helped, but do realise that the answers I have given you barley scratch the surface of the reality. What you seem to wish to acheive is very much possible, and has been done many times, by many people. There are many ways to acheive this, some of which are in my answers above. I have no doubt you will get more replies, giving different advice. Most of the time, any other answers given have merit (note I said "most") and at the end of it all, how you go about it is up to you. This is the best thing about EvE - the freedom to acheive what you wish to acheive.

     Good luck, and fly safe.

Thank you Doug, I guess I was a little disheartened by a few posts I saw on this and other forums about the catch-up aspect.

I'm on my first day of the 14 day trial, doing the missions and training Learning skills (due to the advice of people on the Rookie channel)... and am definitely impressed with the game. Hopefully more and more will open up to me as I progress.

Just don't let training the learning skills get in the way of you doing what you want to do in the game. I remember that a lot of things are blocked to new players until they learn the skill requirements. My advice: pick something(s) easily within your grasp, train the skills needed to get started as far as requirements go, then - and only then - should you consider training the learning skills. If you start on them right away, the game will just start to fell slow before you know it, and you won't enjoy it.

If you haven't decided whether you'll be a subscriber yet, don't even worry about the learning skills. They will only remove valuable training time from the game, and you won't see their results until after your trial runs out and you're working on some high rank skills. If you think you will be subscribing, at least put them off until the second week of the trial.

I played for a while without picking up the learning skills. Now a year later, I've slowly brought them up to max and have yet to get the secondary learning skills above level three. I do not regret getting them so late, either. I have played the game and enjoyed it. Its just a matter of preference, but I feel that the Eve community makes getting those skills sound more than they are worth to new players sometimes.

Anyway, number one, enjoy the game!

I just started as well and, after playing much MMORPG's, i have to admit, this is the most complex one i've ever started. ::::04:: There are so much things to learn, such an good community which is very helpful, so many cool graphics and on top realy, realy cool PvP as well as i could see in some videos and heard from friends.

And.....it has the longest Tutorial ever! But...you need it and the ones which are willing to pass it, are "ingame" then :) You learn much things about the whole game and i have to say that this is the best Tutorial i've ever seen.

I think for old Elite / Wingcommander / X category players which are looking for an MMO, thats for sure the right place! Im looking forward to a great future.

Hope to see you there ::::14::

Whether you succeed or get stomped into the ground depends on your REAL LIFE thinking abilities and your real life knowledge of the game.

I guarantee you, a hardcore killer with 5 million SP will stomp a 38 million SP carebear into the ground like a 4 foot tall kid from the ghetto snuffing a 6 foot tall 300 pound office guy from suburban USA.

Like USA vs Vietnam, the paper tiger doesn't always win.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog.::::28::

not just the carebearer ( or u said - money maker - I dont understand why they love making ISK that much >_> - not for sale for RL CASH ! but for fitting faction mods ( go to ingame and ask - it took times to understand this ) and go deeper to complexes and earn more ISK !!!!! meh ! a 1.5 Bil BS is such a waste ...

The point it u can take any one down - even the mightiest pirates but it needs ok few months to prepares and experiences takes times .... Its 3 month now for me and at last I have my 1st killmail ^^ - over 19 ships has been lost image

The point is fight ur way out ! image

A mate of me killed his first Intys and cruisers in a simple cheap tech 1 frigate after only a month.
People that take the SP disadvantage as reason that they loose fights usually just suck in PVP. ;)

If you have a good imagination and play around with different ship setups you'll easily be able to kill players that play since day one. You just have to pick your fights. If you engage a heavy assault cruiser in a normal cruiser you will die most of the time so avid such fights.
