Well, I voted for non-descriptive ambient for a few reasons. One being, I don't want the bgm to distract me from the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, i love rock, but I just don't think it would set the mood of the environment, same goes for techno. (Also, i just dont like techno )
With non-descriptive ambient, I'm assuming it could change for when enganged in combat, or when in a ruined civilization, or an outpost, basically fit any situation.
I went with ambient too because I think that there should be music (travelling music, combat music, etc) like darkaster said, but I don't think it should take your focus off the game. Just some simple music that describes the mood would be best.
Waiting For: something good
Games Tried: SWTOR, Star Trek Online, EQ, EQ2, Earth and Beyond, Planetside, Lineage 2, Eve Online, WoW, City of Heroes, City of Villians, Auto Assault, Fallen Earth
Star Wars: Galaxies - Ibra Olasi (Valcyn Server) [Dead, screw you SOE]
I put a vote in for goth. It was actually a struggle for me between that and techno, as I feel both styles would be most suitable to a post-apocalyptic setting. Although, I would only like to see music playing while 1) in a vehicle, or 2) in a bar/club/etc.. 3) or wearing some type of headset (in-game of course )

Yeh I said in another thread it would be really cool if you could find rare discs or records and built a player, songs and music from the fallen earth, which when you play people in the area can hear, and there are lots of different records and they are rare. would be cool.
I also would love to be able to build a guitar and sit strumming it on the porch of my desert-shack, dont know if this is even being thought about, but i can dream. :P
I picked techno cuz it really adds some energy when im in a dangerous situation and playing a game... thats prolly just me. I need some fast paced music when i need to get moving. and some slower paced stuff when i need to relax.. maybe im just wierd but....
Music cd idea
I am suprised no-one said industrial music. 90's era industrial would be perfect the more mechanical sounding the better, none of the synth-pop crap that tries to pass itself off of as industrial today.
But I would vote for ambient over specific styles of music.
Current Games:
What kind of industrial do you mean, enzyme? Something along the lines of VNV Nation or Funker Vogt, but without lyrics, I assume? I think that might work well for investigating underground bases, or other technology based settings, but for wandering somewhat aimlessly in the desert, I'd prefer something subtle and nondescript.
