Is it open beta where anybody can play or is it closed to a select few? and if it is open where will we sign up at?

it will be basically a stress test, so it will be open. You can sign up for beta right now at their main website www.dnl.net
they might have a new sign up for stress test when it comes out, i am unsure. Just have to check everyday to see if the stress test comes up
its not a open beta, its a game all its own. the stress test is something different and has nothing to do with sog. the devs have said that sog (the release in november) will be a full game and anybody can download and play.

Yes, he is right it is the actual game. Well, the beginning part of it at least where what you do there is branch off into the full blown game that launches in April 06 or anytime they want to release it. Its pretty crazy as they are going to want us to pay just to play part of a game.
I don't know about that, I love this game and all but, I'm not sure if I'm "in love" with this game meaning it all depends on how much they want us gamers to pay.

SoG is free to play its a prelude not beta, beta will be taking place at teh same time to test features before put into SoG.

I have been waiting for DnL for well over a year. Here is what I belive to be the truth.
Dark and Light will be released in April 2006. The games own timeline will be starting at aprox year 9000
Settlers of Ganareth is a free intro to the world of DnL and will run for six months, up to the release of DnL. It's game timeline starts at aprox 8880.
SoG is suposed to be a standalone intro to the game DnL but most belive it is actually just a fancy way of stress testing the DnL game/servers.
The clever bit is that SoG will also create the history for DnL.
We are being tempted with concepts such as areas being named after the first explorers of the world. Certain high achievers names becoming part of the game history.
Towns etc at DnL release will be as they were built by the SoG players.
NOTE - like all betas, your SoG characters will be wiped before DnL goes live.
Bottom line is that one of the most anticipated MMORPG's for some time will have a six month free for all intro. Go here to join in

But the characters that we used during SoG will they be part of the DnL stroy-line forever? What i'm saying is that if Ken Shiero, me just so happens to be a big part of SoG will I read about myself in-game?

Settlers of Ganareth - Answers to your questions

As promised, here are the first answers to your questions. New series of answers will come depending on your new questions. Some of your questions are still being answered.
Clarification on Settlers of Ganareth (SoG)
SoG is free and everyone can access it.
The key that you will be able to buy will give you access to Dark and Light in April 2006, you won't need to pay again at that time. Moreover, this key will grant you exclusive bonuses in Dark and Light, but also in Settlers of Ganareth.
Announcements to come
From now till the month of November, you will get details on :
What will remain of your Settlers character's life in Dark and Light
The number of keys that will be available
The devchat that will enable you to ask questions to the Dark and Light devteam by yourself, especially on classes and races available in SoG
The possibilities offered by the Dark and Light keys
How will I get SoG ?
It will be available by download only, this way everyone will be able to access it easily.
How will I buy my DnL key ?
By credit card or debit card and through Internet only, we are studying new methods of payments right now.
Crafting
Taking into consideration the timeline in which you will evolve in SoG, you will have to discover the beginnings of crafting. You will start, for example, by extracting crystals or wood. Crafting will get more and more complex as you discover this art.
Pets
You will be able to use pets in SoG, and they will be able to use magic.
Quests
Some quests will immediately be available to you as you enter Settlers of Ganareth ; they will allow you to dig deeply in the world's story and culture. Events ingame will influence your quests from time to time.
Open Stress Test
The Open Stress Test is still scheduled and more information on this matter will soon be given to you. SoG and the open stress test have nothing in common (conditions of access, content, dates...)
Evolution of SoG's content
Settlers of Ganareth will evolve technically during its six months of "life", through content and functionality patches.
Closed Beta and NDA
The closed beta will go on after the release of SoG since we will have a lot of new content and functionalities to test. The NDA will therefore not be lifted for the moment.
Modem required
Even though you will be able to play SoG with a 56k modem, the performance of the game will be limited. A broadband connexion is our technical minimum.
Starting zone in Settlers of Ganareth
Dark and Light characters will start in a tutorial zone where they will get their basic teachings before carrying on with their "life" by leaving Al-Drifa.

Are there restrictions or privileges buying DnL Keys? (beta testers, guilds, etc)
There are no restrictions, everyone will be able to buy keys until they are gone.
Is SoG an open beta?
No SoG is a game by itself - a prelude to DnL. You will not be beta testers, and you will not be asked to sign an NDA or do bug reporting. Settlers of Ganareth is our way of saying "Thanks for all your support and enthusiasm".
What is the date of release for SoG, and when can we expect a detailed feature list?
Many of the detailed features and the release date will be announced in the beginning of November.
How many characters will you have per account?
Three (3) at this time.
What will be the size of the software download for SoG?
1Gb, more or less.
Will there be religions?
Yes, Alchemic Dream will explain how it will be managed in the near future. Each religion will have its own hierarchy and players will be able to run every rank within their religion.
Will Alchemic Dream will be in SoG for live events?
Live events will be run from the first day of Settlers of Ganareth, and will give you the chance to influence the story. They may even enable you to change the outcome of prophecies! You will also help people to discover new knowledge, and to help them evolve.
Do you have to pre-order a DnL key to play SoG?
No, SoG is free for anyone to access. The DnL pre-order key will provide you exclusive bonuses in SoG and DnL.
Will DnL have legends about what happened in SoG?
Yes, there will be historical and personal traces of lives lived in SoG.
Will we be able to build fortresses?
Yes players will be able to place and build the first fortresses themselves, and defend them!
Will there be a SoG game manual?
Yes, there will be an electronic manual available.
How will you keep the players interested in SoG during those 6 months?
By adding new features and new gameplay as they become ready, through testing in the closed beta.
Will there be technical support in SoG?
Yes, Alchemic Dream will provide technical support for SoG players.
Will there be both Social XP and Fighting XP systems in SoG?
Yes, both will be implemented.
Will SoG be translated into more than one language?
Yes.
Will there be a special SoG forum?
No.
Will character names be blocked, filtered or limited?
No special characters will be allowed, and Game Masters will address names that do not respect game guidelines.

How will we be able to download SoG?
It is a Peer to Peer download, accessible with BitTorrent technology.
Guilds:
Guilds can be formed in SoG. Here is a short list of features:
Membership Management
Rank Management
Guild NPCs and Quests will be available
Managing the guild hierarchy (for example, you can create an "anarchy" model guild)
Messages of the day (MotD) for the guild and for specific ranks
Common bank account linked with ranks for authorizations. Its history and bank account can be viewed.
In a future patch: ownership of guild fortresses
Technical and Player Support:
We will provide the same level of support in SoG as we plan to in Dark and Light. There will be no difference in level of service.
Building villages:
This feature will be integrated during the course of SoG.
Information about purchasing DnL pre-order Keys:
Community members will receive an email around November explaining to them what to do to buy a key, and when to they can do so. If you still don't have an account on the site, you should think about creating one. Also be sure to have an up-to-date email address in your profile (via the User CP in the Forums). We will be offering keys to the DnL community first, as a thank you for showing support.
Kingdoms available and size of the world:
In 8881 you will only be able to travel in the Kingdom of Al-Drifa and the two realms near it. Dragoon still controls the others, but the war continues and you may see its troops trying to gain territory... or loose it if you fight well. Those 3 kingdoms represent around 5,000 square kilometers, or 3,000 square miles (including water), representing 1/8th of the entire Dark and Light map.
PvP and PvE in SoG:
Fighting betwwen Dark and Light factions will be possible as soon as you leave the Kingdom of Al Drifa. You will also fight against monsters of course.
Housing:
The housing system will not be available at the start of SoG, but should be integrated in a patch after.
SoG Server:
SoG will be hosted on a unique server.
Settlers of Ganareth lifespan:
SoG will end when Dark and Light starts, so you will no longer able to play SoG when DnL releases.
SoG account lifespan:
If you create an account in SoG the first day of release, you will be able to play until the release of Dark and Light. Your account will not be limited in number of days or months.
Exploration in SoG:
Exploration skills and the SxP system will be in SoG.
Characters on the same account:
You will be able to create both Dark and Light characters on the same account. For the moment there will be no restrictions on switching from one to the other.
Pets:
You can train and use pets that are not mounts, in addition to mountable ones. Basically, every monster of Dark and Light can be trained as a pet if you have the appropriate skill to do so.
Character creation:
When you create your character you will be able to modify your physical appearance. Details such skin color, hair style, facial hair, tattoos and piercings will be available.
Closed beta application during SoG:
We will continue our closed beta invitations during SoG.
Patches and characters:
When patches are applied in SoG, even BIG ones, your characters will not be erased, unless there is no other technical option available. It is something we are trying very hard to avoid.
Burning SoG to DvD:
You will be able to burn SoG to a DVD (due to size requirements), and will be able to share with a person who has, for example, a 56k internet connection.
