Yeah. I bought Wolcen day 1. I won't be repeating that error with this title.

The shut down servers on September 17th and abandoned Wolcen and gave the big FU to their fans and supporters. You would have to be delusional to support anything from this studio.

Well looks like someone understood that POE Formula ARPG without pvp does work only for POE. That myth that ARPG is made only for PVE is stupid.

They've apparently lost a ton of execs and senior people since Wolcen launched. That could be good but you have to be very skeptical with this developer. They are one of the worst at communicating in the business.

They also broke their promise of adding a final story chapter like the previous ones. They just rushed in a tiny story element mixed with the existing endgame.

I'm not sure there's much demand for what they are designing and maybe they'll pull another 180 with this new game like they did with Umbra, their original kickstarter design for Wolcen.

I bought Wolcen for a few bucks after they announced the server shut down. My expectations were in the right place and it didn't let me down (until Act 4 when it became brutally hard). It didn't exactly stand out either, but the combat was really satisfyingly meaty.

Not sure how to feel about this new twist on the genre. I don't like extraction games, but I've also never seen them applied to a PvE genre that I actually like. Surprise me.

Yes. And honestly... a no pressure offline ARPG experience is refreshing in this seasonal FOMO genre. Though Grim Dawn does it better.

    They had me at: "ExtrAction"

And by had, I mean I had myself checked out to be sure I wasn't having a stroke.

Yeah thankfully the game still works (thankful in terms of not sunsetting entirely) but servers are closed and no more updates.

PvE is all I do in ARPGs and I doubt I'm alone in that.

Why is it a bad thing that Wolcen no longer receives updates? To me it signals stability and familiarity, a much more sexy terms than seasons, ladders, changes etc.

That beggars the question. Can it be modded now?

Could it be? Probably. Is there a dedicated fanbase willing to mod it the way they modded Torchlight 2? Probably not.

I think people have been pvp'ing in ARPG's since Diablo 2.

The ARPG scene is dead enough, no need to piss on the ashes with Wolcen.

This is a silly take. ARPGs, just like MMOs tbh, are "long haul" games. There are people playing and enjoying things like Diablo 2-4, Dungeon Siege 2, Path of Exile, van Helsing, Torchlight 2, Inq: Mart, TQ + GD and even Wolcen. Not to mention Ladt Epoch, upcoming TQ2, PoE2 etc.

It's alive enough, you don't need Fortnite or Helldivers numbers.

Were you not aware of Path of Exile 2's excitement when it came out recently? ARPG scene is not dead what an honestly misguided opinion.

Everyone who started playing ARPG before TikTok. Whats the point to play an online game if there is no competitive endgame content?

So stoked for this. I was working on an extraction ARPG concept but they beat me to the prize. I am very glad to hear about it and cant wait to see it.

That’s certainly a take on it.

One could just as easily say “collaborative content.”

Didn’t Pantheon MMO already try a Pantheon extraction rpg?

I can't even follow all the twists and turns, it is like the developers were negotiating a cease fire not making a game. :)

Well you have brought up one here. Just how much time do players play the PvP on ARPG? If it is a lot less than the PvE time you have to ask "are these games not too PvP slanted?". I have always found them to be a little lacking PvE wise. But it is hard to judge these games to other RPG genre's, maybe I am just not taking into account smaller budgets.

The PVP you get varies a lot as well, but surely no one sees that as their strength? As a big PvP fan (as well as PvE) I wish it was better.

I'm in my 50's. I've been playing video games since I was 8 or so. Atari 2600, Atari 400, Commodore 64 era. I've been playing ARPGs since Rogue which is the game that spawned the term "rogue-like" although I played Angband more. Feel free to Google it.

All that "back in my day" and "get off my lawn, kid" to say I've never intentionally PvPed in an ARPG. There were little tricks you could do in Diablo 2 to get people to flag for PvP and I've had that happen. I also accidentally killed teammates in Diablo 1 because it had friendly fire. I'm not sure it counts as PvP until the part where they get mad and shoot back, though, haha.

ARPGs have and always will be about the loot hunt. That's why people play those games. End game is about min/maxing to the highest degree. PvP, if it exists in the game, is a side show. It's never balanced because the game isn't built around it. If you want PvP you go play League of Legends or Counter Strike. Those are games designed for PvP.

This is my experience as well with this genre and PVP.
