Good luck on #3. Heck I just started Fallout 76 because I got it on sale for $10. Literally within the first 15 minutes of the game at level 3 when I'm still figuring out the UI, how to use the map and whatnot I get this level 66 jackwagon jumping around in my face running circles around me and hitting me with a club. He couldn't do anything because PvP doesn't enable until level 5, but I was like "well F this" and logged out. I went and signed up for the subscription so I could launch a private server and have been playing it as a single player game since.
Simple rule of humanity: you remove accountability and add anonymity to any situation and a significant percentage of people will turn into assholes. Not everyone or even most, but for sure enough that you will experience it first hand.

Fallout 76 is much better with the subscription, the extra storage / junk scrapbox are worth it by themselves.
Public servers are good when you want to run a public event like Fasnacht with other folks and also once you build up some caps to check out the player vendor shops for recipes etc you may be missing.
My problem is most mmorpgs today are just carbon copies of each other, they are soulless, have no sense of community and such anymore as most of these mmorpg are too soloable. I've mostly given up on the genre. I understand casuals are where the money is these days, but they have ruined mmorpgs as a genre as the games cater to them now. I miss old ff11, like way back when lv 75 was the cap and there was no trusts etc. People had to work together to get places in that game, it had a nice community and such. They don't make mmorpgs like that anymore.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
I went back and played EQ1 after a very long layoff......I enjoyed it for awhile, but one constant remained: it takes FOREVER to do anything....In 2025 you pretty much have to box, so by the time you load all your group and get them to where you want to go, alot of time has passed, usually at least an hour just to get started.....Most of hte post-WoW MMOs dont thrill me at all....I realize they looked at games like EQ and tried to remedy the time sinks, but like others have said they had no soul and felt more like entertainment than a game.
Best way to play MMO/MMORPGS imho is to rotate them with 4 Players CO-OP. I play WoW Classic till I get bored then I rotate between Helldivers 2/Vermintide/Darktide until theres something to do in WoW again.
I find myself more fatigued by the comments sections of social media platforms related to MMOs than by the gameplay itself, with the exception of discussions here or on Reddit, or similar thoughtful spaces. Many of the editorials and news articles on other MMO-focused websites increasingly resemble sensationalist gossip tabloids, offering little in the way of meaningful insights into development, theory crafting, or the actual gaming experience.
Community and playing with others where it is fun really makes a difference. Fly safe//
People may not want to admit this but mmorpgs have become more cosmetic focused over the past 101-15 years, so the will to push 'hard content' has less and less meaning behind it. In most cased you never 'need' what that content has right away, so only a handful will attempt/clear it within that patch while the rest decide later to do it or something less recent. Given how many mmorpgs are designed that way, many casual players play less because they end up having 'more' to do later when they decide to play. So I wouldn't really say its 'burnout' so much as there's no 'rush' to play many mmorpgs anymore. Without urgency, people dont really have a 'drive' to play. And no, FOMO isn't urgency, its just poor development design.
Find a mmorpg you like and look for the community inside of the game; ignore the forums, ignore social media, ignore reddit, ignore youtube; you WILL NOT FIND community in these spaces.
They will be on a Discord though, that is the exception.

It's been a few years since I last played but far as I know PVP in FO76 is totally opt in only, at least last time I played anyways.

I think the only helpful suggestions for me is #2, where I would go back to EVE and pick back up where I left off over 8 years ago, at least for two or 3 of my 6 accounts. But for that to be appealing I'll need to find something very different to do, like become a pirate or mercenary.
#4 might also be good as I'm considering taking up UWO once they complete their latest patch / reset.
Of course, also considering wrapping up my current District Zero overhaul mod on 7Days2Die and starting over on a different one called Rebirth.
Heck, I'm retired now, why not do all 3?
Whoops, also in the middle of playing Wasteland 3, 80 hours in and a long way to go.

i jump around alot...started out with eq, eq 2, wow, daoc, aoc, etc.... I think i have played ever good mmorg out there. Currently im playing Pantheon, Throne and liberty and new world. I enjoy these for now. Looking forward to Dune?? maybe... I just need the escape form real life and do not have a lot of time ( have a family ) to invest in raiding. Thinking about going back to Lord of the rings online....
I play FO 76, first time I logged in, after a couple hours some guy waved at me and then prodeeded to give me all kinds of gear, as far as I know you cant even PvP unless you opt in, but at higher levels a good bit of the content can be pretty hard and alot of fun.
In the begining of December I decided to return to WoW and the War Within. alot of the same old WoW stuff, which is ok but one aspect I like becuase its really challenging is Delves, yes you have to go a tier slightly higher then your IL but they finally made some content that you may actually die, and the solo dungeons where you have all NPC team is cool to becuase you can actually explore a dungeon and not just run thru at top speed not even noticing what the dungeon is all about

I played again for a few months last Spring / summer and i am sure when i get the itch i will jump back again but you are dead on, no non consensual PVP.
Of course on a public server there is no opting out of general ass-hattery but that's few and far between
Played MMOs since UO, and recently just got burned out of the experience. I did all of the above for a long time. EQ TLPS, WoW Classic, EQ2 Origins, etc .... the nostalgia was good but the time commitment is just to much anymore.
D4/POE2/Single player games hit the itch nowadays... and I don't miss MMOs

Everything takes ages. That mangy rat in Sneed's Galliway's Outpost never spawned after 5 sewer rats and one hour later. I just got fed up. I then recalled the hours no sorry days I spent camping one mob. Hmm one tuned to 3 months. I cannot do it any more and you know what I loved the game but I do not want to spend time like that any more. It's not about the graphics or UI it is the sheer amount of time I will lose when I can play so many other games in my huge backlog on Steam and my JRPG wishlist. I think I have to finally lay Everquest to rest.
