I don't understand why they entered the alley int he first place, were they fleeing something? The article reads like they started after the first paragraph that got left out...

According to the linked article that area is just a popular night life area. Seems like it just got too much traffic due to the celebrations in the area.

Terrible to hear about, your heart does go out to the families.

Generally speaking, if you find yourself in a large crowd (this one was huge), stay in the most open area, don't stay or try to go through tightly enclosed spaces. Which is obviously far easier to say than always do.

Sometimes once you realise it's too late and you get pushed even if you want to turn back. Crowds are always dangerous and can turn deadly.

Especially disturbing are the reports I read of people hearing or seeing some others yelling to "push, push" from behind.

One woman said she saw 5 or 6 young men pushing the crowd.

    Whatever were those idiots thinking?

Then again, I'm reminded of the videos of Japanese train "pushers" who are paid to shove as many passengers on to a subway so am wondering if the same goes in South Korea perhaps, so pushing is not uncommon in some situations?

Crazy tragedy and sad for all involved, not sure I understand canceling an MMO event because of it though.

I think people expect such crowds to be difficult to navigate so pushing forward is how you get through. Though does sound like stupid behaviour it was a night out, lots of drinking and so on, they probably thought it was a lark!

Companies feel too much of a need to do something, send that virtue signal but they have done more than that here. However, what they should have done is organise an official in game "candle lit" vigil for those lost. Get some devs online, pick the right setting and time. That would have meant far more, whether for servers worldwide I would not be sure, but probably those too. Still, it is better to do what they have done, rather than just a tweet.

If you truly need to know "why", there you go.....but either way, are they not worthy of the understanding they requested!? Maybe some employees were present, or family members there of.....¯\_(ツ)_/¯

it's not just a small alley, it's an elevated small alley, all you need is someone falling from the top before people will fall like a domino, especially when it's crowded.
