Yea, but Diablo isn't one of those games that's played for character gear progression, so whats the problem?  ;)

He passed $16k NZD yesterday without a 5 star gem, so 10k is fairly outdated.

Everytime I see outrageous numbers like these, I think to myself what I would do with all that money lol. I just can't see myself connecting with ANY game on that level.

The fact a player has been persuaded this is the right thing to do is appalling. At least he quit, others could end up in debt due to a gambling habit.

It just proves he's a retard, and then some games feed on retards (which is probably wrong).

There are many people who fall prey to making a big mistake or even get a gambling addiction, DI is rated at 17+ but we all know those who are younger will be playing. I hope this fellow serves as an example of what happens when you get that tempted.

How is it going for you anyway, when you told us what you were playing in my thread I was surprised you had time to fit this in.

I have addicted gamblers in my family and I despise it to its very core. I will never support a game that uses this vile technique to ensnare players.

I can play this game probably and never use the gambling aspects but I have to admit many games have gambling to some extent but this game is so horrible in this aspect I have to on principle (even though I lack it most times) shun it.

My dad likes to have a bet on the horses, but he has never gone overboard, in fact I first heard how silly some people were in their betting from him. They could lose the equivalent of over a £1000 to 1500  (in today's money) in one day at the races and not bat an eyelid. That said my dad who would spend about £50 at the races was still "flushing it down the toilet" according to my mum. :)

This is not accurate, and it also shows zero empathy for anyone who suffers from an addiction of any sort.

These aren't rich folks with more money than sense.  Research has shown it is people with pre-existing addicitions to either games or gambling (or previously at high risk for either addiction) being preyed upon by these monetization methods.

It's not like game designers are stumbling upon a monetization method that leverages those addictions.

They're doing it consciously and intentionally.

If you're okay with lootboxes because they only affect those people and not you, it says more about one's own worth than it does about those who suffer from an addiction being leveraged here.

Your disdain should not be for fellow gamers, but for the folks creating the monetization methods that target addicts.  For every wealthy streamer "retard," you're likely lumping in 2 or 3 times as many normal gamers with addicitions or high risk predispositions that developers have identified as ways to force money out of them.

TL;DR: it's amazingly depressing to me that folks' first instinct, when faced with a situation in which we know companies are preying upon addicts, is to try and dehumanize the addicted group instead of condemn the group knowingly trying to leverage addicts for personal gain.

I seriously doubt that Quin69 has a gambling addiction. He did this for clicks and notoriety. I have no idea how much a streamer with 670,000 followers makes that he can blow $16K NZ on a self promotion stunt like this but I bet it's plenty.

Also, my understanding is that while he was live doing this, viewers were making large donations to him so he would keep going. It'd be interesting to know how much of the $16K was new money generated by him during the stream.  Who knows? His stunt might in fact turn a profit if it hasn't already.

I suppose he's providing a public service by showing people who don't read and can't wrap their heads around the very low odds, the reality of how tough it really is to get 5/5 star gems. Those of us who read and do math already knew this but sadly we're a minority it seems.

Some of the addict blaming comments on this thread are hilarious (not in a good way) and totally beside the point. I don't think he wants or needs our sympathy. :)

He's feeding a huge quantity of money, some of it provided by idiots who watch him play a game and pay him for that, to a game/company that doesn't deserve it, just to prove what ? To get more clicks on his videos.

Dang, I hate all that generation of "useful idiots", the streamers. Talk about social leeches.

Yeah but the point you and others seem to be missing is that on a scale of 1-100 of being "part of the problem" he might be a 10 compared to the Blizzards of the world that are close to 100.

Yet when the subject of predatory, abusive monetization that preys on the vulnerable is raised many here and elsewhere are quick to hand wave it away because they're playing it their way and they're having fun. That crowd IMO is also in the 90+ range at being "part of the problem" and are the real useful idiots in this shit show.

Seems to me it's a problem of education, and probably of mental health too. Maybe our education systems should do their job, and inform people about this starting when they are very young ?

Or just forbid that kind of cash shop. Like states forbid drugs. And while you're at it, forbid casinos too, and any kind of random-based games involving money. I personally don't mind what Belgium and Netherlands have done in Europe, forbid loot boxes.

I'm sick of these societies who blame others for the weakness of some mentally unstable people. Nobody holds a gun on the head of the guys who waste their money on such futile crap, it's just a video game, if those people play it and pay for it, it's THEIR doing. It's not very different from those people who dig their own grave with their teeth, eating fat and salty fast food crap every day, how do you stop them ?

Note that I don't approve companies abusing this situation, and Blizzard is the latest offender on this, comforting my decision to never give them a cent ever again.

And no, sorry, the people who play those games as true "F2P", never giving them a cent, are NOT part of the problem. If only people like them were playing those games, this monetization system would already have disappeared. The people making that system viable are those who are paying, the "whales" being the worse offenders.

I completely agree with you (I should specify: about the specific streamer and those supporting his continued spending here), but trying to convince all of those disparate individuals to stop their behavior seems, to me, a lot like herding cats when there's cohesive teams of individuals working together to poke holes in your cat stable's walls and coax the cats out using treats.

And again, it covers only a relatively small portion of the folks who drop serious money on these systems.  Streamers alone are not going to keep D:I afloat.

We've gotten to the point where a developer added gambling in an actual casino to their virtual game world, and we think it's okay simply because they force you to buy in-game currency to gamble with for in-game items, as if that isn't going to condition a teenager at all.

If you are in the game, as a whale, a dolphin or a remora (*) you are playing your part in the aquarium that is DI. Could the game exist without one of these three, maybe the dolphins as they were late comers as far as I can work out?

Nonsense. A "pay2win" game can perfectly exists without your "remora". It only needs those who are paying. The others are so far behind anyway that the pay to winners don't play with them.

That's not invalid as an argument, but its hard to gauge how much the whales feel they need a wider population. Lets say there are 400 whales, if that's was the population would they want to stay in it?

Well, the best solution is your solution anyway. Don't play any game, so you can't be wrong, and it doesn't stop you from commenting on any of them anyway ;)

People who pay absolutely nothing can't be part of the problem. Specially in a game like Diablo, where the number of players in the world is irrelevant.

Nonsense. If we leave aside the addicts who got to that point through their own weakness and its exploitation by game companies, the purpose of most whales in an online game is to satisfy their need for external validation. If you removed all the F2P players and left only the whales, then a) they would leave, as the multiplayer component would break down; b) they would leave, because there would be nobody left to fawn over them standing in the middle of the busiest place in the game showing off their bought goodies.

The whales need F2P players - both as admirers (they need applause for buying whatever high status that particular game offers) and to let them do group content. At the very least to act as a living breathing background animating the world, which otherwise would be just an empty game, not far from any regular single player game (and thus defeating the purpose of playing a multiplayer game in the first place). Otherwise there would be no purpose to their whaling in online games.
