Damn. I'm incredibly impressed with this thread. This community has come a long way.
Most of the posters in this thread have been able to have conversation/discourse like this for over a decade.
It's more along the lines that just a few weeks ago, even the mention of blockchain would cause a ton of backlash.
This thread, most of the posters are showing a little more tolerance to the technology and that's really surprising. It shows me that people are looking into it and becoming more informed.
I get that people may still not like a lot of the monetization aspects of blockchain, but it has always been my opinion that as long as we can communicate the ways we want to see the tech used and the ways we don't instead of denying the devs completely, we might actually get somewhere.

Technology, blockchain, and one of its results, NFTs, don’t mean monetization. What however can cause confusion is the Play 2 Earn idea. Do you make money by playing? Do you earn stuff which you technically ‘own?’ It is a confusing concept by design and I can fully understand people thinking: ‘If people can make money here, who is paying for that? Because the gaming companies definitely won’t. It must be the other players then.’ This contrary to, ‘you can earn items here that actually exist.’
Besides the confusing concept there is also the tie with the whole crypto scene which is still viewed as a ponzi scheme etc. by many. It will take at least another decade to be fully embraced by the general public.
None of this however has anything to do with the actual technology and how it can be used. That said, I don’t think gaming items (except for perhaps specific genres like TCGs) or ugly computer generated art are the best ways to use NFTs.

Are you trying to make the case that the underlying tech doesn't mean monetization when every single company is tryin to sell people NFT's?
When the entire point of implementing NFTs is to sell them to make money.
I could say just because we have the technology of the wheel doesn't mean it has to roll. When in 99.9 percent of all practical applications wheels roll.

I remember how F2P would ruin gaming, which came right after the whole ‘digital only’ drama which would absolutely destroy gaming as we knew it. Now its NFTs, whatever. A good game is good, F2P or not, only digital or not, and NFTs being implemented or not.

looks like another house of merchandise to me. Ill just get a new hobby.
When I was a younger after I gave birth I took up rollerblading to slim down. I had a bad spill and I started playing console games. I changed my hobby then to gaming, do you think at 65+ I can go back to rollerblading?
Sure, I'm almost 65, been a long time runner but over the years Ive taken some hard falls, more frequently as I got older, culminating with 3 in a 5 month period last year.
I could have stopped running, my Drs and family encouraged me to but I really didn't want to, so I analyzed why it was becoming problematic.
Running in the dark, early morning hours was one, so I started carrying a flashlight and now wear a terrific headlamp to improve visibility.
My shoes have been wearing out more quickly for some reason, either manufacturers are making them cheaper (I shell out about $130 or so) or I'm just dragging my feet more as I age.
I now replace them every three months and I worked with my local running store to find an unusually designed shoe, Altra Rivera which has a broader toe box area to help with balance.
Finally, although I don't look very stylish, I run wearing roller blade elbow and wrist guards as those were the areas taking the greatest damage when I fell. (Well and my face, but a full coverage motorcycle helmet seemed impractical.)
Couple all of that with making sure I pay more attention to looking down more instead of up and out has resulted in 217 days now w/o a fall.
Point is you can keep doing more physical activities as you get older, just have to make allowances and take more precautions.
My wife still won't let me take up base jumping though ...

It gives you the illusion of ownership, that is all.
As an enterprise database solution, blockchains have huge potential.
As a consumer-facing currency? Not so much imo.
NFTs seem, to me, to be analogous to a certificate of authenticity for a digital item. But if that digital item is freely and endlessly replicable, that doesn't actually seem worth much.

First, there was the Original. Then there was the Limited Print. Now there is the NFT
In covering games here, or in writing a review, how often does the database technology actually become an important part of the review?
Does anyone besides a developer know the database engine behind New World?
I think you should simply stick to reviewing a game from the player's perspective and leave the "earning rent money" crowd to themselves.
Do that and we won't have to worry about an NFT game ever scoring above a 4.0 on this site or any other site - if you leave the fanboi lies off to the side and simply review the game for entertainment value.
To be fair, many people like a game of chance etcetera. I might not like it, but maybe many other people do.

Not really though, projects like LTO are going the decentralized way with NFT packages meaning that no one can take control from you, so it isn’t an illusion at all. The decentralized system often also means that you can't make backups. In a way being decentralized makes it very safe, but it also generates completely new types of risks since you're not allowed to save the asset and license on your own backup.

Actually, I'm not so certain that NFTs will give you 'ownership' of anything. In the case of an image-as-NFT, the NFT simply embeds a link to an image asset somewhere on the net. It doesn't give rights to that image; it doesn't convey IP property rights to that image (the artist/producer still owns that). You might think you own an image of Johnny Storm, but that doesn't make you Marvel, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, or even Carl Burgos (attributed as the person who thought of the character). That image you carefully protect can be removed from that mystery location linked by an error, or directed actions.
The image-as-NFT concept is already being used to step all over IPs, from classical artwork to comic book images. To me, it is a technology that is confusing the issue of ownership and control, rather than enforcing these concepts.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Sort of. It depends on what's in the contract of the NFT.
Some NFTs give you merchandizing rights and things like that. So for example, lets say you own a JPG NFT and you are allowed merchandizing rights of the NFT you own, you could potentially make shirts, hats, cups, etc.
Some may impose limitations on those rights too. Ownership of the token and asset also kind of transcends the game itself, and there could be allowances or limitations on what you can do with that as well.
The fact is, it's all kind of muddled, and requires you really look into what is written within the terms of that particular NFT's ownership.
So in that respect ownership goes a little farther than just the rights to use the image or item in game.

"Be water my friend" - Bruce Lee
I just don't want things to get carried away.
All I can do is hang on for the ride

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'

That is as far as I understand it, under current law anyways.
It's all a matter of trust my friend and that is in short supply these days.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
I see progress has been made. Good job taking it from the begining MMORPG.com This approach will better serve all involved.
For anyone wondering, once again no clue, no warning, no email, just ban.
Honestly all good. I was spending too much time here. At least I see it wasn't for not.
