And before anyone posts some nonsense about "Don't look at it" can we, as a society, maybe make a line where we allow certain things but don't have to shove it in other people's faces?

I don't care what you pleasure yourself with on your own time - just leave me out of it.
The thing is, while I agree with you in spirit, there are places that have very diverse populations, and sometimes the things you are seeing that you don't want to see are what's left from the stuff they ARE leaving out.

I mean, maybe if you are living in Utah or Montana you might find a more homogenous society but walk down Times Square in New York and you'll find something else (though it's much more family friendly now.)

The thing is, these ads rarely register with me. They are like yellow wallpaper or beige walls. However, I can easily imagine images that would cause me to say "hmmm, that's probably inappropriate."

I guess everyone has "their limit" so to speak.

What if part of our pleasure is making sure you're part of it?

I mean that would be weird... but I'm not here to judge.

As the title says, I'm disgusted with the soft-core porn cartoons on the MMORPG home page. Young girls with gigantic boobs spilling out of their clothes. Short-short skirts. Skin tight swimsuits. I'm sure there are plenty of other websites for those who like to look at these types of pictures.

Is there any way to turn them off?
I use ad blocker. I always white listed this site till some of the ads got out of hand and the day I clicked on one of the sketchy ads and my virus protector went bonkers. I was done with white listing this site. Funny this is the site I would love to white list most. If they were more selective about the ads. I would change that setting again.

I think drawing the line at child-porn is a good place to start.
There is no 'diverse' population where that is acceptable.  Period.

We aren't talking about "omg..they're showing people of color" on MMORPG.com.

I think several solid moral arguments could be made but I'm not even getting riled up on that level.  Again, it is more the "Wow, tits and underwear... I gotta buy that title nowmindset of the developer/ad agency.  I hope they all die in a fire.

like I said in a previous post in this thread, I'm not so sure that's what you are looking at.

You think these images are "child porn" because you are informed by your culture.

AS I mentioned, I had a Japanese girlfriend and basically pointed out some gamer art where they looked "western" and asked her if she saw a western person or someone from the east and she assured me that they looked completely eastern to her.

Reason being is that, as I said before, "cute and youth" play a big part in their culture as well as having "wide eyed" faces for certain expressions.

This is not to say that they don't have issues with very questionable things but I wonder if I showed these images to someone in Japan or Korea and asked if these looked like children or adults if they would say "of course they are adults."

    Good discussion.

So cultural sensitivity goes one way then?

    Not really what I'm saying.

And honestly, part of what you wrote depends on how you look at work from other cultures.

For example, there are people who absolutely will not watch movies with subtitles. They want to hear the dialogue in their own language. And while that's understandable, listening to the inflexion of someone speaking in their own language informs far more of what is going on in the scene as opposed to having a completely different person say the dialogue as a voiceover.

I've seen so many foreign films at this point (my buddies and I have been doing a bad movie night for over 12 years at this point, every week, and most of it is foreign like Giallo or Jess Franco films, etc) that when I listen to both English voiceover and the original tongue I can tell they are completely different in delivery and intent.

I say that because there are people who are fine taking another country's content as is and not altering it to fit their own culture.

So some Japanese company might just make their games and create their marketing and thinking "we really hope they think this is cool."

I don't see it as they are trying to force stuff down our throats or that they expect us to be culturally sensitive. I see it as "this is the product" if you like it great.

However, if you are the type of person who thinks that literature or movies, or games from other cultures should change for another demographic then you might not really see it that way.

I personally would never want that as the whole idea, for me, is that it IS work from another culture, it is something different with a completely different sensibility and that is part of the draw.

If any company wants to change things in order to make their product more palatable to another demographic then "great" for those who want it. And some do. But some don't, they just make their product and hope those interested will like it.

Same, I avoid this website when my kids are lurking around me.  Or if anyone else that thinks I'm an adult is near.

Before that we'd have to do away with the absurd characterization of anything shown on this site as child porn. Anything restricted should be done on the basis of what it is, rather than a hyperbolic contrivance of what it isn't.

Many moral arguments could be made, but none solid expressed from such a nonsensical foundation.

I'm sorry the developers in this case, and perhaps Japanese culture at large, doesn't understand child porn.  For all the fine things they bring to the world, on the child porn point they are unequivocally wrong.

The one that doesn't understand child porn is clearly yourself, as is evidenced to your application of the descriptor to anything on this site.

You're clearly not in a position to make  unequivocal statements about it.

Child porn??? Where in hell did that come from. You know the real problem is with the people who look at anime and connect children to it.

BTW, while I think age alone is a pretty poor standard (gotta use something) according two the Wiki article at least two of the girls are jailbait: SoulWorker - Wikipedia

Apparently, none of them old enough to drink, and certainly too young to be shopping at Discount Stripper Wearhouse.

    So yeah, child-porn.
I love the outrage, but, gonna just say this comes across as a very generic Anime style plot and storyline.

I mean no diss, but this could have been a blub for RWBY's cast, all things said an done.

So are you objecting to the concept that anime is porn or that anime depicts children in it?

How you got that from his statement is so far out there, it is crazy ridiculous.

No animus to you personally, Sorvath.

No worries, it's not an issue.

I just don't think that it's child porn. I think this is how they depict adults/young adults within a certain type of fashion(I don't know the characters in this particular game) and because there is more there than what we think it is.

Just quickly looking up lolita girls I get an article depicting Harajuku Girls which encompasses a lot of "cute" lolita styles.

There you can see quite a few women dressing up as young children or dressing in a variety of lolita fashions (there are many sub genres of lolita fashion - who knew?)

And here is the link to quite a long article that does shed some light on these particular Japanese Cultural fads.

    One notable paragraph:

It is generally agreed that cuteness is used as sort of a cultural Prozac in Japan’s brutally rigid society.8 Brian J. McVeigh, scholar of East Asian studies at the University of Ari-zona, explains, “Cuteness is used to soften up the vertical society, to soften power relations and present authority without being threatening”.

It just seems that there is so much going on there that a westerner adopting a very rigid reaction to it and saying downright "it's child porn" really isn't understanding what's going on there.

This is not to say people have to like it but other than "real" child porn (which we have in the west  - sadly) I don't think that's what we are looking at. But without proper context and only using western eyes, it feels like a knee jerk reaction (understandably so)

edit: I'd like to add this quote as well:

"Unlike in much of the West, where adulthood is seen as a period of freedom, in Japan adulthood is viewed by many young people as a gloomy period of heavy burdens. According to Sharon Kinsella, the majority of Japanese teenagers ex-pect their adult life to be a period of restricted freedom and a time of adult responsibility to family, company, and societal obligations."

My Japanese Girlfriend told me that once you are in the working world you are expected to live for the company. Not only that but if the company says you will move hours away and work at another office for several years you do it.

And you are expected to work well toward midnight.

I asked her if people just left work at 5 pm like we do and her response was "well, if you had an entry level job or were a temp you could. Otherwise you're looked down upon."

It's also the reason she told me "that's why I'm here (US) and not there."

So clearly there is a worship of "youth" in relation to freedom.
