Apparently these guys got rich off writing cheats:
Police bust 'world's biggest' video-game-cheat operation - BBC NewsUp to $200.00
per month for a subscription to a cheat site.
Evidently they were totally unaware that the community won't even pay $15 per month for a subscription.
Sheesh.

Consider mmorpg isn't as popular as shooters... probably only games like wow would have subscription cheats like that.
(Good book, BTW)

It wasn't that long ago that you went to 3rd party gold sellers to buy fully leveled characters or buy gold and that also was considered cheating. But now that WOW and others sell high level characters and sub tokens you can sell in game for gold is that no longer cheating and those players shouldn't be branded? Seems inconsistent unless you also show the same level of disgust for what is now called "whales."
This has a lot more to do with not letting 3rd parties make a profit from your IP than any feelings they may have about preserving the integrity of their games. It's just better PR when you can spin it to be all about game integrity.
You may give a shit about the integrity of the game you play but I'm not so sure Tencent does any more than doing just enough sell their game as having integrity.

It is all about supporting the game. Absolutely, 100%.
And I support that, 100%. Screw anyone that is going to pay some 3rd party hackers to beat a game they often refuse to spend money on. Screw that whole system.
In case you were wondering where I stand on that one.
The core point is:
Playing by what the Developers Set.. is not.
Case in point, using 3rd party services to get levels and gold in a manner that is not the way the Developers designed the game to be played, is cheating. Buying or using services provided directly by the Developer is Not.
Lets use an Example:
Some cheaters go to a 3rd party site to get an Aim Bot, basically turning a Action Combat game into a tab target game. This is pure and simple cheating. We all get this.. flat out bare faced cheating.
At the same time:
If the Developer opted to put in Tab Targeting, or Assisted Targeting into their game, this is not cheating, it is how the game is made.
It's that simple.
If you do not like the game the developer made, you have many options to play other games made in a way you like.
What makes no sense at all, is playing a game that you do not like the existing mechanics, and then spending money at 3rd party services to bypass playing the game as the developers intended. That is just beyond moronic at it's core.
As such, anything a Developer does, to expose the stupidity of doing something like that, I fully support.
Even if that means, they say something like "Fuck it, we got blokes blowing 200 a month just to cheat our game, the assholes, so fuck it mate, we are selling Aim Bots for 50 bucks a Pop"

If they get it from a 3rd party.. it's Cheating.
If they get it from the Developer... It's P2W.
Now you may not like either, but I hate Cheaters far more than I hate P2W, as I am of the belief that all P2W has derived from 3rd party cheaters. If people were not willing to spend money to cheat a game just to win, there would be no P2W, as such I will always have zero sympathy for anything that a Developer does to humiliate these cheaters, to drive them away from their game.

Usually the line is drawn so that bypassing what the devs set is cheating while using what the devs set is not. But it's still a question of where we draw the line.
I draw the line at stupid.
That seems to cover both of them nicely.
That way, at the very least, you can punch 'em in the arm when they cheat.
Paying 200 a month to cheat a game that you are complain about paying 15 a month to play.
That's some bullshit right there.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
