Do's and Don't's of Valheim

Just a little "do" and "don't" thread... Try to keep them at one per post.

When gaining a new material or metal, don't upgrade your weapons and armor first. Upgrade your mining tools! To level 2.
You will save a lot of time gathering the ore needed to upgrade your equipment afterwards.

Yep! I always craft the tools before anything else. They are what provide you the resources anyway.

Not sure it classifies as a "don't", but don't throw seeds. For me personally, I got a very unforgiving world. As such, any convenience I can get is great. One such convenience is pine seeds.

Sure, you can make a portal back and forth, but you can also plant an abundance of them by your base and get core wood whenever needed.

To save on stone don't stand below and use your hoe to raise the ground. Stand up top and it will raise the whole height you need in one go.

When you get attacked by a wraith while leaving Swamp after mining iron and fully loading up your ship with it, do not go to your ship and try to run away from it. Stay on the shore, kill it and only then go to your ship and depart.

Losing around 140 units of iron is a painful lesson :D.

Same goes for plains. Goblins can swim, same for those big fur things. Also goblins throw spears... They can easily mob and destroy your ship mid journey.

    Ooo Nice thread.

Okay I saw this guy do this but you can take smaller floor tile and using shift to adjust the height put it just above a chest and you can place a chest above the chest below and stack chests as much as you want.

Both berries from meadows + black forest can be combined in Queen's Jam, which is as good as meat.

Don't stay in your fortress or base house during a Troll invasion. Get out and have them chase you instead. They'll do far less damage to your buildings and perimeter fencing.

Make sure you buff up and eat your good food first so you'll have enough stamina to actually run. Trolls are fast out in the open.

Do you have too stay within the perimeter of the red circle or can you leave it?

So for the event to end you don't have to stay within that perimeter of that red circle and engage the mobs. You can run away from the red area and the event can still tick away the timer or will the timer stop if you leave that area. It makes the area you have to kite the trolls rather limited if you have to stay within those limits.

You have to get aggro kite them away, same with skeletons, they will continue breaking your stuff unless you give them something else to focus on, that being you. Eventually they will get bored and leave.

Though myself my main base being small I just sit inside with my repair hammer and repair the walls they hit til they get bored and leave.

The last two shaking events I had troll armor on and was crouched inside a closed building and they just stood around confused one of their legs even clipped through the wall. It was like they didnt know what to do,  they didnt break anything either and eventually left.

I think it was because they couldn't see me as was a building with a roof and I had sneak armor on which reduces detection by 25%.

I am trying to practice killing trolls. I am at the edge of the Black Forest now trying to upgrade my workbench. Going to build another house there so if I die getting core wood I can get my corpse back easily.  I will pepper the whole world with my tiny houses.

I have to practice with the bow. I am so bad at it.

Hard to miss a troll though ;)

Make a few fire arrows, they help since they also apply a DOT while you run away from the big bad ugly guy.

And use the terrain, run around rocks and trees.

Also, if you craft the bronze shield (or higher), you can parry their attacks if you time it right and stun them. You will need some stamina to kill them without kiting, but its doable.

However, one thing I noticed is that the troll that is bare handed, if he does the overhead smash with both hands, I couldn't parry that attack (at least with my bronze shield+3). So avoid that attack.

Melee is totally out for me I can guarantee I will get hit by every one of the troll's attack. I cannot time parry and block for shit. Kiting I can do. I have quadkited in Everquest but I had J boots on so does not really count for much. Plus I did it only a couple of times and then died and lost more experience than I gained so I gave up quadkiting. I decided AOE groups was the 'Sauce'.

Its not easy, as if you time it wrongly you get hit. Still, a bronze shield or higher can block the whole hit if needs be. Only that overhead smash I wasn't able to block/parry.

Don't just pick raspberries, shrooms, dandelion and thistles and run off...mark it on your map. They respawn at the same place so it's handy to have a large run as these are all used for late game food meals for HP and healing/stam pots. Pick up all those yellow shrooms from crypts they are needed too!

If you mark all the ones around your main base you can run around with zero inventory and fill it all up rather quickly. Quite handy!

Kill every serpent you run across, their meat floats and is needed for top HP meals same for lox.

Not sure about the berries - just near my main base, I have a little ruined villages where you had fields of raspberries, they never respawned (yet).
