ODIN: Valhalla Rising ( G-Star 2020 )

MikehaMikeha Member EpicPosts: 9,196
ODIN: Valhalla Rising has caused some shockwaves since it was first revealed earlier this year, and it was quickly followed by a publishing agreement with Korean gaming titan Kakao Games. Together with developer Lionheart Studio, more details and elements of this Unreal Engine 4 masterpiece were revealed during the ongoing G-Star 2020 exhibition.

Looks like a survival game, but if not looks to be a cash shop asian mmo. We need some well funded studio-backed(never thought I'd want corporate suits ruining mmos, but it seems that is the only way to get them finished) mmorpgs.

It looks awesome. However, people are going to have to understand that this is a very stylized VERY high fantasy interpretation of "vikings."

But yeah, I'm there day one. We'll see if it's any good.

I'll be there too if it is not too action orientated or twitchy. That dragon whoa was so cool. Those eyes popping open on the body ... creep factor 10.

I strongly suspect the combat will be closer to Black Desert.

    Agree on the eyes thing!

There are two levels of game design, what we see visually and what is under the surface.

I have no  doubt Korean or JPN/Chn devs can make a visually nice game but I have not seen many indications of designing a good game beyond the visuals.

Then to further dampen the hopes is the "business"side of things, their goal is to make money first and deliver a quality game second albeit no different from east to west cultures.

So in trying to find a way to monetize and turn profits they will design the game accordingly. One such design revolves around longevity and cash shops, create unrealistic grinds for the sake of keeping longer subscriptions.Create grinds to encourage cash shop use but what all the designs lack is to bring us a plausible real world, true human like interaction, very poor AI and even worse a UI that sticks out like a sore thumb with screens full of markers and mini maps and icons pointing you to cash shop etc etc.

So what are the odds we get a developer that thinks along the lines of morally FAIR,WANTS to deliver a very realistic plausible world, character development not tied to cash shops, grind not just for the purpose of creating longevity for greedy reasons?

Well imo the odds are very low and why gaming has hit a near stagnant growth in diversity and creativity.Hence why already 10 years ago we started to see the term CLONES and copy cat gaming. All this does is give us new TITLES a new SKIN but in reality same old but maybe even worse than same old.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Asian vikings... females in high heels casting spells....

    Atrocious aesthetics

    "eH!"

The only thing atrocious would be not committing completely to what they set out to do.

Currently watching a youtube movie critic who is doing a short (30 minutes) video on Dracula and Bela Lugosi.

One critic at the time - "Were this story put on the screen, it would be an insult to every one of its audience."

    Another  - "Absolutely no"

There's always somebody who "doesn't get it" yet these pieces, games, in this case, have their audience.

I personally don't think it works (the corgi, the high heels, the Black Desert Wizard people running with a staff on their back) but if one just allows them to do what they set out to do there can be a rather absurd but wonderful presentation.

    I'm ok with absurd.

I'd rather have corgis and high heels than "staves on the back" which always look stupid.

I doubt the intended audience for this game will find these issues overly problematic.

Why not? It's certainly not the first time Asian games have made reference to Norse mythology, along with a broad interpretation of it. They may be more familiar with that and Nordic culture than might be assumed.

I don't expect their interpretation to be extremely close to reality, but I think whatever it turns out to be will have a strong foundation of reality to embellish upon.

Thumbnail of the video in OP. The reason is staring at you and you at it and it's not her eyes.

That's a pretty shallow scrap to dismiss the entirety of a game over.
