Could they make a last contact event, close the game down and let some other company do Star Trek right?

Take a look at the population in game, who is spending money (whales). Star Trek Shows help the game, but hardly anyone stays longer than a few weeks. The problem is there is no real measure of player activity that most subs will admit to being true. Using the Steam metric is a guaranteed way to get down-voted to oblivion. Even though it's a decent indicator of how well STO is perceived initially, the problems of the game speak for itself and too many game sites say the same things in their reviews.

Just by the nature of MMOs, (even with new content release) I can promise that the player base is at an "all time low". It's not low enough that SOME people can't run content and that's all that really matters. The new content has also helped bring in new players but they rarely sub or stay.

I agree, the inability to run content later in game is a glaring issue. As you said, their are spikes at times, but no one stays for long. I have found the mobile games offer a better ST feel than the this game.

I tried the game recently.  I guess I didn't really give it a fair shake.  I got so bored during the ground combat intro that I quit.  Never made it to ship combat, which might be much better.

I played a few months back and this game is a turd plain and simple.  I can't believe that many people liked the game.  Makes me wonder and questions Steam's rating.  Metacritic's seems more along what I would expect.  When I played there were very few people around and it just didn't feel like Star Trek to me.  It gets boring quickly.

See I thought it had a decent Star Trek vibe, but the game play was just boring.  It's rare that I don't even make it through a MMO's tutorial.

Ground combat is really a weak spot, even in shooter mode it's slow and wonky. I used to send the team ahead, that's why they're redshirts :)

Space is better, but not in the tutorial, it has just the basics and fairly short. As you advance in ranks and experiment the different ships and weapons, seek what's best for your style, that's fun.

Interesting notion though, and made me thinking, but I don't remember any, personally. I mean games where I stopped during the tutorial. Maybe my tolerance of boredom is higher...
Since tutorial is kinda the handshake, the first impression, it has to be good enough to peak the interest. STO's was pretty long, and when they revamped the progression curve and traiting, they've shortened the tutorial too.
Apparently there's still work to do with it  :)

ed: as a coincidence the "other" site (MOP) just had a STO article, and:
"All of the tutorials (and even the Dominion scenario) involve some ground combat. Everything you’ve heard is true. Ground combat is, as multiple sources have told me, “a hot mess.” I don’t think clunky is an adequate descriptor. "
So, you ain't alone on that one, Mighty...

Space combat is better and as you experiment with the different ships like said above can be a lot of fun when you find your ship.
I really enjoy the research aspect and my favorite ship class is the defiant tactical escort.
the ground combat is truly terrible.

How much of the game is spent with ground combat?  I only do PvE.

Oh no!! Don't down vote me! Whatever shall I do in life if I am down voted by the internets!??

Dude...you down Steam reviews then post Metacritic and Angry Joe? ROFL. Seriously? #irony. Steam reviews are unforgiving as they come, the fact it is not even mixed tells me that "It would seem many disagree....", EXACTLY what I posted. Many do, in fact, disagree with you.

So you can come at me with your crybaby shit all you want, I posted a fact and provided evidence as to why "it would seem many disagree". Just because it does not follow your agenda does not make it less true.

Sounds like you're the one crying about things now, just saying. He provided alternatives and you start the finger pointing and accusations, but yeah the other guy is the problem.

He came at me because he didn't like the FACT I posted. Bunch of crybabies on these forums, little kids who can't stand someone disagreeing with them. Take your buddy and go hug it out, you'll get through this.

I don't know why everyone is being so extra over this game lol. It's old and not worth raging over.

While it's not the best MMO, it's OK to play through once for the story, then it becomes dull. Others use it as place to hang out in and socialize from what I have seen in game. No one takes it as serious as some of you folks seem to lol.

I started playing this more last summer during the summer event; which isn't bad for an ingame event, lots of  of competitive stuff to do, races are fun. For my time I got a t6 ship, hit FA ect.  I still play when these events come up for the hell of it. You don't need to be a whale to play it.  I think I spent $20 + another $10 for a charity event that gave me several t6 ships. They do plenty of events that give stuff away as well, plus you can convert all the Dilithium into Z to buy cash shop stuff. Honestly you could play this game just fine without spending a dime.

How much of the game is spent with ground combat?  I only do PvE.
70-80% space / 20-30% ground?   Some missions will have you do stuff in space and then either beam down to the planet or beam over and board a ship.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

That seems aabout right, on the higher end, so game is around 30% ground if you PvE (and skip the ground pvp modes).

    But.
"game spent with ground combat", that's a whole different topic, and basically it's up to you. Ground is often used for story elements of a mission chain, investigating something, etc. without combat.
Also, now you can skip missions from the storyline, it you like - and you don't mind missing some story snippets.

With all that in mind, for the "spent with combat" part I'd say very minimal on your story progression through the admirality (level to cap :) ) and zero at the endgame if you only partake the space activities.

ed: if you do events (endgame of before), there might be some ground "combat" but mostly just for the show, 1-2 shots all, since it's an event afterall. Can be a nuissance, but on the other end, you get free ships and other goodies for it :)  and they're fun, like the summer festival on Risa what Tiller mentioned.
