Intel counters AMD's new CPUs by offering new bins of old CPUs

Behold, the Core i9-9900KS:

https://techreport.com/news/3466538/intel-announces-core-i9-9900ks-special-edition-cpu/

To me, it looks like this basically formalizes what motherboard vendors have been doing with the Core i9-9900K.

If that's not enough for you, there's also the Core i9-9990XE:

https://www.anandtech.com/show/14980/the-intel-core-i9-9990xe-review

That offers 14 cores, with all core turbo up to 5 GHz.  For comparison, the rest of the Sky Lake-X lineup only had single-core turbo up to 4.5 GHz, and even the refresh, Cascade Lake-X, doesn't have single-core turbo exceed 4.8 GHz.

That's not exactly going to fend off the latest challenge from AMD.  But they could be interesting products to people who care only about high performance, and not about power consumption, price tags, or reliability.

So, essentially, bragging rights?   Company chest puffing, while a boon to a small group of folks who really like to push the envelope?

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Seems like those people who like pushing the envelope would already own a 9900K (or other CPU) and have overclocked it.

This is for people who want someone else to push the envelope for them and are willing to pay for the bragging rights.

Anyone else is either jumping to Ryzen or waiting for Comet Lake, or as this article calls it, Panic Lake

Still going to be building a 3600x/3700x or so come black friday.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

With the sunsetting of Win7 I may finally have to retire my trusty overclocked 3570k from many years ago.   I have tried to upgrade the system to win10 twice but it just fails.   It's a shame because it can still literally run any game I want at acceptable frame rates (1920x1080).  Maybe these new bins will push some prices down a bit...

I'd like my next one to last me 7 years like the 3570 did :)

I’m probably too old and set in my ways to try a new OS. Everything works great on it though. 16GB RAM, 1060 videocard, 2 SSDs.  I’m thinking I will just keep it going until games officially drop Win7 support.
