The best approach is to wait it out for 2 to 3 months if they dpnt go p2w and things are healthy then you jump in and dont lose anything. If it sucks or a cash grab, then you waited it out.
That is my approach. I am also playing an MMOnive played since 2009, entropia universe, so im good.
You'll play an online casino disguised as an MMO but you won't throw $26 at Archeage? I spent my fair share of time in Entropia and that was one of the most expensive games I've ever played.
Entropia is the shittiest game out there . . . Unless you are a semi-gambling addict like myself with money to burn.
I also meant that i am scratching my MMO itch as well. I did get my mmo itch rekindled with 1 month of wow classic, hit level 11, died once, deleted my char and moved on . . .

I've got in twice and got to level 35 already. The game can just kick you to desktop after a few hours of gameplay and put you at the back end of a 4500+ queue that takes between 1-2 hrs though.
It's better now since it's nighttime over here. About an 800 queue only on 1 server, 30 minute wait. I decided to have an early sleep and play off peak instead.
This is on a weekday as well, when everyone is at work, school, uni or whatever... weekend should be fun.
I waited in queue for 2 hours or so but took too long making a character I guess (it only took me like 3 minutes), because it decided not to let me complete character creation. Looked it up and it has to do with some timeout thing if you don't log in within like 10 seconds of getting out of queue. Maybe it's fixed now but I wasn't trying to wait another 2 hours at like 11pm yesterday.

That 10 second thing isn't true at all. The selection screen timer is about 10 minutes. Things just go wrong when loads of people are slamming it at once.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
One day, a well known MMO will launch that does not have log in issues, players will then come to the forums and social media to complain about how it just does not have the feel of a proper launch and the magic is just not the same.
