En Masse Entertainment has informed its Closers community that EU and NA servers will be merging into a single world server. The merger process is slated to begin on January 29th at 4:00 pm Pacific / 7:00 pm Eastern and will last approximately ten hours. To help players prepare, devs have posted a Q&A with helpful information about what needs to be done ahead of the merge process.

I don't think this game has ever been thriving, or been seen as thriving.

Oh, I thought all the Closers players had already moved to the Code Closers server. Thanks for the news.

Why they ever bothered publishing this in the west is beyond me

Never mind the west.  Why did they publish it anywhere at all?  How did someone think it was a good idea to make moving around painful in a game with action combat predicated on moving around a lot?

Of course, considering how much of the game they didn't bother to translate into English, it probably didn't cost them much to add an English language version.

It's honestly a good game, I wish that the game was more popular than it is. It's a lot better than you give it credit for, and the fact that the dialogue has subtle differences based on the character you use is amazing, showing how the NPCs react to the different personalities.
As far as the combat, it does take some getting used to, but once you've got it, it's a blast to fight your way through large groups of enemies, and the boss battles do get better as you go further into the game. I'd say it's one of the best side-scrolling MMOs I've played. I'd love an open-world game based on the Closers world, or maybe a peek into the pasts of some of the older characters. I hope that the game doesn't shut down any time soon, it's definitely a game that worth looking into. As for how there are parts of the game that still haven't been translated yet, they probably just wanted to get the characters themselves in before bringing in the rest of the game.

All right then, I have to ask:  how many side-scrolling MMOs have you played?

    Also, welcome to the forums.

Oh it costs a lot more than people realize - all of the below have costs associated with it:

Well En Masse (the western publisher) had to do the following:

    1. Pay for the publishing rights (this is money you have to give upfront - it's usually at least a million dollars, can be a lot more depending on game popularity/projected sales)

    2. Host the game - which means allocating servers - including world servers, databases, backend metrics and channel communication servers etc... when it comes to online games - the back end server setup is usually pretty hefty.

    3. Integrate the game with En Masse platform (this is where you register for En Masse account and get entitlements to play Closers, also this is where all cash shop purchases go through).

    4. Setup client/patch distribution CDNs - not sure what En Masse uses these days - be it Akamai, highwinds or something else - there's still cost associated

    5. Setup internal channels for server updates - hopefully En Masse has some kind of automation to push server updates instead of having a ton of staff to do code updates sent from Korea manually

    6. Localization work - before the launch, and also localization for patches post launch

    7. ETL data warehousing / BI reporting - metrics and reports about the game including reporting that goes back to Korea on how the game is selling etc...

    8. Game support - both in game (missing items, accidentally deleted characters etc...) to billing issues (accidental double purchases etc...), this also includes fraud charge investigation and refunds

    9. Operations work - server operations (moves, server OS patches, break fix etc..), DBA work for all database related stuff, network operations/security (network gear/firewall setup, access lists lockdown and general network hardening) etc...

    10. Marketing - yep - this alone can cost a lot

And there is more - there's a TON of work and cost associated in bringing an online game from Asia to west

If I was a betting man - En Masse spent anywhere from 1mil to 5mil to make it happen - I doubt they made that money back - which goes back to my question...

Why do this in the first place?
