Did you play Fallout 4?
If you didn't I can understand you having fun with this, but if you did I just don't know how you wouldn't compare it to 4 and feel like this is something much less than that.
Nope. I've said in the past that I think it could just be a matter of expectations. It's my first Fallout game.
That said... 3 of the others in my group are Fallout fans.
I also think it helps that we have a pre-made group to play with. I can see how it would be less fun to try and solo it, but that's true in most games like this.
You should pick up and play 4 when you're done with 76. If you like 76, trust me, you'll love 4.
I enjoyed FO4. Played it for about 100 hours, but I prefer FO76.

Could be the multiplayer part is what interests him so Fallout 4 didn't have that but in that case any other survival games might provide the same satisfaction just a different skin and with lesser bugs to boot.

Well @Slapshot1188 's comment above has given me pause. I have been saying for months that every major studio converting all their major IPs to be online multiplayer, the so-called "games as a service" movement, was something they wanted for obvious MT reasons and that we, the gamers, didn't want that. Maybe I was wrong?

Not sure if any survival games are actually bug free.
To me though it’s not just a survival game. There are quests, although mostly acted out via holo tape... they tell a story, or series of stories which I find refreshing. I am also enjoying the Warhammer like Public Quests which pop up.
My main gameplay complaint to this point would be the limited base building. I’d really love to be able to combine and make a big group hideout/CAMP with upgrades etc...
Right now I have a basic, decent sized house with one of each crafting station (excluding the power armor one), 5 turrets, a water purifier, a bed, a stash, fencing around one side that gets attacked by mutants, 4 small generators and some basic crops and I am at the limit of what I can build.
We will see what the next few patches paring.

No wonder they were afraid to put it on Steam. They would have faced an avalanche of refund requests they cannot refuse because of Steam's policy on refunds. Bunch of thieves.
If you had any confidence in your product you should allow refunds.

I dont think there is one right answer. I hope these online multiplayer games do not replace single player ones but supplement them. I also still support regular CRPGs.. my library is full of them and I just Kickstarted 2 more. I just never really get into them any more. The only one I really got into for the past few years was the original remastered Bards Tale. Other than that I’ve played games like D:OS 1&2 with my friends. Same for Grimdawn. The ideal game for me would be a rich CRPG that allowed 4-5 other players to join.

14 days to cancel and return purchases made outside shops (online, by phone or mail order)
In the EU you have the right to return these purchases within 14 days for a full refund. You can do so for any reason – even if you simply changed your mind.
Doesnt matter if they they want it or not if you are EU citizen then they got no other choice.
False. That provision does not apply to online content once you've connected to the service, or sealed digital content once you've broken its seal.
Basically it's right to refund for physical items, but not for software, music or movies.
I'd have to double check but I'm pretty sure U.S. consumer protection laws make refunds within a certain period of time mandatory for any business that operates in the states. Even an 'as is' policy can be challenged and won if the policy was shown to be unjust or unfair. Most businesses get around it by making arbitration mandatory first, and making sure the arbitrator leans towards the business and not the consumer, or they never go with that arbitrator again. Most people don't want to go through the hassle and just take the loss.
Hulray is actually right in regards to EU with their provisions extending to virtual goods as well (although this was amended within recent years). Unfortunately US laws currently exempt virtual goods.

I think it's more a matter of what's important about the franchise that got some folks into it. You and I enjoy the characters and NPC factions littering the wasteland, along the the events (scripted or otherwise) that come along with them. But we both really like that hand-crafted narrative content too.
If you're one of those players who largely ignored the missions/quests because you enjoy more finding and turning all those map POIs from black to white and exploring what's inside... Well, Fallout 76 lets you do that with buddies and you don't really lose anything else other than slo-mo VATS.
Shouldn't be able to return software period. Once you've opened it and played it, that's it. It's yours.
I see people do this crap at restaurants too. They eat like 75% of the plate, and then complain they didn't like the food and want a refund. The chef cooked it. You ate most of it. No refund.
Man... I am certainly not aligned with the vast majority of gamers on this one. I'm actually having a ton of fun with the game.

This is another example of gamers being the problem today not developers. You have a guy bragging he played the game for hours and then requested a refund.
I really dont understand what they were thinking with 76. Fallout4 was already really rough due to the age of the engine and gameplay being like that of an asset flip on steam...just clunky and without much thought, VATS was the savior to the fact that mobs were just not meant to be shot at, and melee is clunky as hell...i mean mobs meant to be shot at keep a distance and move differently they dont rush you and stick to your face making it hard to even melee.
Dont even get me started on the zero thought put into the UI in a live enviroment with no pause.
Bethesda should not put out another game MMO until they get themselves a modern engine and UI set up, and program enemy AI to perform in a fun manner given the combat put in game.
I mean they took out the NPC's and decision making / faction interaction which is 75% of a bethesda game. I really have no idea how 76 even made it out of pre alpha in house testing. Maybe they thought it would be a co-op survival game so no one would care?
I will say, a game broken from the ground up should be refunded without question. Regardless with how long the player tried to enjoy it. Bethesda is better than this and should give anyone a no questions asked refund until its fixed (dont fix it spin it off as a player hosted survival game like ARK and put a pause in)
Besthesda needs to man up and get a modern game engine that isnt unity and go back to making great games. 76 makes me VERY worried about their future work.

"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
It took them literally 26 minutes from my request for them to do a refund and the representative was really friendly. Must have just got lucky because Bethesda customer service usually isn't really good at all.
I see a lot of people saying the game is "broken" or that they have "issues" while playing. I would like to know some specifics. I play on PC and have not seem more then one extremely minor issue in well over 20 hours of play. As best I can see, the game is far better then FO4 was at release and just as much if not more fun.

I love the game, It has tons of bugs. I play on PS4 though, and the consoles are generally better in terms of bugs than the PC.
Server disconnects are still happening.. less common, but still happening.
I've had one instance where I walked into a town, the entire town went black. I could see everything outside of the town, but the town itself was pitch black, and I don't mean like it was night time, I mean everything from the ground to the items, you couldn't tell one from the other, it was black, like endless space.
I have had several issues of enemies disappearing after killing them, can't loot them, they're just gone.
I have screenshots of crazy warping or character models.
I've been stuck in a group - but not, once. Where I was in a group with friends, lost connection, logged in and it said I was still in the group, but I couldn't hear them, and couldn't leave the group. Restarting the game wouldn't kick me from the group either. I couldn't reinvite them.. had to wait for them to kick me from the group.
I've seen enemies stuck in the terrain more times than I can count, and once I was stuck in the terrain myself.
and I've experienced plenty more of them... but I also have more than 80 hours in game at this point. Still enjoying it, and it seems like more of my friends have picked it up over the past week, so I have more people to play with.
Don't know how many people are refunding nor do I care, from my point of view the people I want to play with are there, so I'm good.
It's hard to feel sorry for the people who want to have a refund when all the signs were there that it was gonna be a bad game to begin with. Impulse buying and joining the hype train sucks. It's best to listen to all the reviews and, wait and see how it plays out after a few weeks after release.
People also claim these games can be patched up. Can we really blame the consumer instead of the company that released the game in a state people are flocking to ask for refunds of the amount they paid. Come on surely they bear some responsibility but does it abrogate their rights?
However changing your refund policy because you're having to refund too many returns is so dodgy it might actually mean that they released the game fully knowing how shitty it was.
No Man's Sky was released on Steam and they suffered from many refunds because people found that there was no multiplayer as was advertised by the creator on a whimsical video. At least they released it on steam so that people could actually get a refund unlike Bethesda here who decided to control the refunds themselves. A prescient move or a calculated one?
I don't agree with Bethesda's change of policy, but I have NO sympathy for early buyers, sight unseen.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Look it is my honest opinion that developers are not taking responsibility for their fuckups. They are trying to slink about and mince their way into profits with minimal effort. This is an example of that and I think players should punish them so that these practices will not be rewarded.
Unfortunately the Fallout name alone is enough to make people buy the game. Perhaps if more scorn is heaped on them for this disgraceful refusal to refund the loss of profit will make a difference even if the tarnishing of the name of the franchise does not.
Sorry for the run-on replies here
How do players STOP this "buy first/refund later" habit they've gotten into? NO ONE made them buy FO76. Where is the player's own fiscal responsibility?
Please don't think I'm all for releasing shitty games. I'm not. But when "we consumers" support the practice (paid beta/early access) time and time and time yet again, why should companies change?
Players made a bad decision. LEARN from it. And yes, Bethesda should be held responsible, but they didn't force anyone to buy their game.

Bethesda has hopefully learned a valuable lesson: stay in your own lane. There's a reason Zenimax made Zenimax Online Studios for ESO instead of letting Bethesda Game Studios do it. Hopefully, Howard and Hines get reigned in by the Zenimax board after this.
I disagree. Howard and Hines are the people who made Bethesda (and Zenimax). They are the creatives. Without them there would be no Bethesda since they almost went bust before releasing Morrowind (Howard), which was a huge success. If anything they should be given more freedom to do what they like. It's Zenimax that lay the rules, not Bethesda. Zenimax told Bethesda that the market craved Survival games, so it 'recommended' that they make one. Same for Blizzard/Activision which told Blizzard Entertainment to make a Diablo Mobile game, because marketing said there was a big market, and they needed to get into that market.
No, this stinker, smells too much of marketing ploy, something all big corporations are guilty of, and something I keep complaining about.
Big decisions are taken by bean counters these days, I don't think that's the way to go for gaming companies.

Don't you think that marketing has become very savvy and sophisticated and has to some extent broken down the caution many consumers might otherwise have practised. Do you think companies have not spent large sums of money in eroding that caution and are reaping the benefits of those schemes. Shouldn't they also be made to pay up when they mislead by their own representations which in many cases they have done so while in full possession of knowledge the consumers aren't privy to. Yet you hold the consumer at a higher degree of prudence while forgiving the greedy developer. (I don't mean you @AlBQuirky personally the 'you' is a collective reference, please don't mind me and I apologize for picking your post but I am not going to be arsed to look for the other posts)
I also find it very disconcerting that the blame seems to be portioned out quite inequitably weighing more on the consumer's responsibilities and likewise waiving the responsibility of the developer by simply referencing to the research the buyer should have done. While simultaneously arguing for the reduction in the protection of the consumer and reducing their options and rewarding the developer who are producing rubbish with a very disingenuous "no one forced them to buy the game".
I recall the early efforts my husband and I encountered while being locked in a room with a hungry promoter for time shared holidays in the early 90's that feverishly tried to promote the urgency of locking the price down after having had us for over 90 minutes. We bought it.
If you are of the opinion that asking for a refund isn't a valid option I am at a loss to be honest. This isn't the old days where companies aren't employing huge amounts of money trying to mislead you into buying their products while wilfully glossing over the actual problems they are having in their games by simultaneously promising fixes in the future that may never materialize. In those circumstances getting a refund should be a guaranteed redress. That several people are arguing otherwise seems to be in my opinion a reflection of how far down the rabbit hole we have all fallen.
Man... I am certainly not aligned with the vast majority of gamers on this one. I'm actually having a ton of fun with the game.

Here class is a clear example of what is wrong with video games. It's not developers or games it's people like this.
Stocks dropping have nothing to do with a bunch of grow ass babies crying about video games. Tech stocks have been taking a beating. These companies are still selling MILLIONS OF GAMES while a few loser bitch and moan nonstop on the internet.
MILLIONS buying games>A few grown ass losers crying on the internet.
Even if they miss their sales target. You are still the minority and you are still the problem in video games today.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR

"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
From critical reviews and user experiences, the game is literally an Early Access title that would be sold on Steam for $30-40 max without the IP.
Hate to say it, but brand loyalty has become a detriment to consumers.
