Lotro isn't anywhere near 30,000 square miles, the whole map of middle earth is. Guy who did that old visual comparison had no idea what they were doing.
yup. Its also old and out of date.
Its like someone asks what is a good modern PC that is affordable, and trolls respond with computers that were the best in 1999 or 2000 or 2001 one or even a 2010 pc setup which is still dumb.
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
Depends on how you define the measurement. Is it square miles? Is it how long it will take to run across the entire world or through all the zones (do you count portals and mounts?) Is it the emount of content in hours, and how would you even count that?
Asherons call is big, possibly the biggest world in square miles, but it ifalls a bit into the sam category as Eve with vast areas of nothing. Eq1 is up there in size, with zone sizes not many can match and there are 20 expansions of them.. If you measure in content, eq1 is definately by far the biggest. Swg probably on a 2nd or 3rd place in world size.
Whoever mentioned Eq2 need a reality check, eq2 is one of the smaller in size, certainly WoW, Eso, Gw2 beats eq2, but which of those are bigger? I am guessin WoW->Gw2->Lotro->Eso for 4th to 7th but it is more of a gut feeling.
Not counting the space part but just adding up the space on all the planets I would have to say SWTOR is vast. Before they added fast porting most of the game was spent simply traveling from point A to point B and it took forever.
I use to be impressed by large game worlds but now it seems to be the norm. Also I've seen large game worlds but not all the world was accessible, lots of passages, invisible walls, and lots of instant death oceans.

Wow has many instances how is that an open world? So do many of the others mentioned...
It's not openworld. Most of the folks who state that are newer to MMOs in general than some of us and think World of Warcraft was the first MMORPG lol. Most of them were maybe 2 when the first game considered an actual MMORPG launched xD Then there is the Minecraft guy.
This is by far one of the most depressing, humorous yet annoying threads I've read here in years lol.
Never played Asheron's call, so can't compare. But today's WoW, Darkfall are pretty big. But I would also like to add Tibia to the list. The amount of underground map is pretty insane. It can be seen here: https://tibiamaps.io/map#32368,32198,7:0
OP is wrong in his conclusion that "most of space is nothingness". Dark matter and dark energy - are everywhere.
Eve is completly instanced ..
The answer is still and will not change ..
WW2 online is ...Gameplay takes place in a single game world, which is a 1/2 scale map of Western Europe. It is the largest MMOG game world map, at over 350,000 km2 (135,136 sq mi)

In term of distance simulated in space games - 135,136 miles is miniscule.
which part of excluding space games are you not understnding .. We will try to help ..
I suppose you can compare games in square miles or some similar objective measurement. But you don't get to drive a Ferrari in Everquest. So a game where you can drive one needs to be larger.
I think a better measurement would be size in relation to a player's maximum travel speed.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Exactly travel speed is important a slow travelling speed will make smaller maps bigger.
But then, thinking about it, you can't travel instantaneously in a Ferrari. Hmmmm. This serves to illustrate how instant travel in a game like EQ kind of screws up your experience of it.

Elite: Dangerous dwarfs EvE and doesn't separate everything into small clusters via gates.
You are right- probably the winner right there
You realize the OP asks for no Space games ...
Its like someone asking ... What is the best Donut excluding Boston Cream ..?
and your answer is Boston Cream
That's because Boston Cream is the best donut!

I would say without taking fastest mount travel into account, WoW probably has the largest world. Or Darkfall with the fastest mount speed, as you have to walk everywhere and that world can take a long long time to travel across.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
the world in original Darkfall was huge... it would take forever to get anywhere before they implemented shard portals. But it was nice, relocating to grind anywhere on the map felt like an actual decision to migrate, lol.
Some of the larger worlds do have more open space with just landscape in them, that's the idea, if you like exploring you don't need a new mob and PING every five yards you travel.
MMOs were made for those of us with many different interests be it exploring, roleplaying etc. Now they are made for those with only the "streamlined" easymode interests of levelling and posing in your new fancy outfit.
