From what I understood, the war mode was put in to sort of foster World PvP. Sort of kickstart it again, make it popular and fun.
I have to say, if that was the intention, they failed. Badly.
At first, they were reporting that something everyone was concerned about was going to be addressed: griefing. They made it sound like they would put mechanics in place that would at the very least discourage players from griefing lower level players. That was apparently scrapped when lower levels were essentially immortal. But the question then becomes: why not keep them that way to higher levels? The likelihood of a lower level seeking out higher levels just to grief them (much less being able to even get to them in the higher level zones) is so insanely low that the risk seems to be fine. But as I have seen for two weeks now, there are DROVES of high level players who think it's absolutely hilarious to swoop in on a flying mount, one shot you, do a little dance, and then camp your corpse for 30 minutes. That's not going to bring in new blood to the World PvP scene. Especially not on lopsided servers where one faction has FAR more people.
In the past two weeks, there has been TWO instances of World PvP where my son and I engaged players right around our level. Once, we were outnumbered. Once, we caught one guy who attacked me right as my son got there. The rest of the DOZENS of times we were engaged, it was by top level characters one shotting us and then laughing/dancing as if it took any sort of skill whatsoever to push a single button.
Blizzard apologists have tried claiming that "War Mode isn't for leveling". That's odd....seeing as there is a 10% xp boost that disappears at top level. I have been told "that's the point to World PvP". I scoff at this. If that were "the point", half the server would have hated it from the start, and I remember the epic SS/TM battles. If overwhelming odds and force is "the point", then perhaps I have outgrown world PvP, or more accurately, perhaps it has changed and I no longer recognize what it is.....which, at this point, seems to be roving bands of sociopathic 13 year old kids who think it's hilarious to waste other people's time. And if that is the case, then war mode is a failure. Because I doubt anyone is a fan of any game wherein it is impossible to win. Imagine Fortnite......but when you drop in, the other 99 players had been playing for 10 hours, agreed to a ceasefire to kill you, had created mega bases to fort up in, and had looted all the chests on the island. Doesn't sound fun, does it?
I am hoping they make a few changes. One to make sure each shard is (as closely as they can be) even on faction population, and that lower levels are protected from the whims of higher level players. I have no problem fighting battles against larger numbers or players, as long as they are MY LEVEL. How hard would it be to phase people by level? Give like a 5 level range, kind of like they do in BGs? Just a suggestion.
Anyways, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Am I just missing the point? Is this "really just for BfA" despite starting 100 levels prior to it? Is this really the state of world PvP now? Let me know!
