What makes it a "Living World" according to Steam's description?
Seemed anything but when I tried the game.
I'm having a hard time accepting this game as a Sandbox despite claims that it is. I've always felt that the defining feature of a sand box was that almost everything decent in the game was player crafted and traded through a player driven economy.

You can't have a publisher driven economy based sandbox. It just doesn't work, even if you put a formal "Sandbox" label on the box.

BDO and Bless have both been advertised as sandboxes, but that doesnt make it so. I remember when ESO was coming out it was also being advertised as a Sandpark, a combination of a theme park and Sandbox, now its clearly a smooth theme park game.

A sandbox is literally a box with sand in it for a kid to play however he likes, the only rules that limit him is that he remains in the box and can only play with the tools that his mom and dad provide for him, outside of that he is limited by his imagination. This is to define the analogy at-least how I perceive it.

Minecraft is obviously a sandbox but not a mmorpg. Trove could be considered a voxel based sandbox. Eve is probably the best example of a good sandbox. Archage has a great amount of sandbox qualities but with the theme park quest grind as a weak layer to guide new peeps into the game, so id call it a good sand-park game.

Black-desert to me is open world pvp (or maybe pve now)focused game. It has some sandbox qualities but has to many rules that limits it. Such as no trading, a economy based on a pricing capped market. Those last two things really kill the idea of it being a sandbox,as the economy really isn't in the players control. It also limits their imagination on ways to fit in to that economy, which is usually the drive of any mmorpg sandbox. PVP can be a factor into a good sandbox, as it helps define the trade routes player create and provides more way for clans or guild to react to the environment and themselves. Good examples of this is EVE, Archage, Albion, etc.

I know this has become off subject from the original OP but i see the discussion about Sandboxes and what makes a game a sandbox all the time so.... my 2 cents.

If at first you don’t succeed, call it version 1.0

I thought BDO was worth the $5 just for the character builder.   The gameplay  doesn't fit my preferences, but was kinda nice just to see the animations and such.  Not going to put another penny into it most probably.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

BDO is not like other mmo`s the combat is great but it looks to me like you level to level 50 and then grind for better gear so not like the normal mmo games but its cheap now.
    its PVP focussed not pve.

If BDO are as you call it PVP focused, how come there are so much PVE to do?

If a game has rules, restrictions, instancing then it is not a true sandbox.

So, with that being pointed out, BDO has instanced housing, BDO has sex restricted classes, BDO has class specific gear, BDO has no PvP until you complete the level 50 quest.

I could probably find a lot more about BDO that is not sandbox, but I do believe BDO qualifies as being called a Sandpark, which is a term invented a looooong time ago for the very reason of people claiming certain MMOs as sandbox when it was obvious they weren't.
Then is Ryzom not a sandbox MMO either? In Ryzom there are many restrictions.

Or EVE? EVE introduced solo instances in their recent expansion, is it not a sandbox MMO anymore? Also in EVE also if you aren't in a large corp/alliance, you are restricted from having any influence in nullsec, you are restricted from making a large empire.

But guess cause EVE now has instances, its no longer a sandbox by your definition

The big things that make me think of sandboxes are games where:
    • Character progression is non-linear.
    • You can build your own character instead of being locked by selecting a class that determines most things.
    • There are non-combat classes
    • The game economy rely on crafters and traders.
    • Players can influence the game world.

Let me know about games that focus on those things instead of trolling a thread with nonsense arguments on why a game is a sandbox.
