It will be interesting to see what the game looks like now. I do hope it's better than this, if they're going beta soon.
Yeah... that's kind of how it was when I tested many months ago. It's why I kind of just put it on the back burner. I get the idea that they are designing their own engine to handle massive battles so it's a slow process...
...but I'm kind of a "show me" guy... and it's about time for them to start showing me real tangible progress towards a game and not just an engine.

So, the announcement is bigger than formal announcement of beta 1. That doesn't leave many options.
1. Announcing release date
I think this is actually the most likely thing. It's definitely bigger than announcing beta, they've completed enough features so hopefully they can be confident in a date. Mark has also constantly espoused the virtues of an old-school development model....well, in an old-school dev model, beta only happens when you've basically finished the game, and release used to follow beta very quickly.
2. They've licensed their game engine
Their game engine is unique. It's one of the few that can actually handle massively multiplayer features (the other being EvE's) and it's designed for an environment that we love (fantasy). It would not surprise me if CSE white-labeled their engine and licensed it to other dev studios. It would be a great source of income for CSE without putting any pressure on feature expectations of the game. It would be even more awesome if they licensed the engine to a AAA studio, and this announcement is going to coincide with the announcement of a new AAA MMORPG that we've never heard of...... yeh, maybe that was going too far!
3. They're changing the name
I feel this is less likely given that backers voted on the name of the game, plus I don't think the name of the game is necessarily bigger than the beta announcement. But, from Mark's point of view, it might be considered bigger, especially if he won back the full DAoC name.
4. They've attracted another investor, resulting in first expansion
Attracting an investor is not a big announcement by itself. CSE have already been through this a few times so it would only be big if it prevented the cancellation of the game. I don't think we were in danger of that. However, if the investor brought enough money (and pressure) to start changing features, that is big. I like to think that Mark is wise enough not to go down the Star Citizen route and keep expanding the scope of the project, so instead I believe that he'd go down the expansion route. So, a large investor may result in CSE being confident about a first expansion and they might announce that.
5. Cancellation
Extremely unlikely, but would certainly be a bigger announcement than beta 1!
What about adding another big name developer to the team?
I do think it's their best bet.
They are focusing so much on "shiny large scale battles" that there are whole chunks of the game that look sub-par, so push the scale of the development of this title would be good news.
So it's not another case of Indie developers going through nightmares attempting to create one MMO.
And claim CU as a subscription MMO is a rather bold move for Indies.
OK, so they posted a link to the "announcement of the announcement" newsletter on MOP. The newsletter says nothing about this announcement being bigger than beta 1, so I'm now back to being convinced that this will just be the beta 1 announcement that was promised last month.

No MJ has clearly said it’s not Beta 1 but bigger than that. Beta 1 announcement will come soon though.

Ok, so if it's not a Beta 1 announcement, then I'm assuming that a release date announcement is out of the question, so @cameltosis can probably scratch his #1. I'll write a new #1 for you....

What I worry with CU is that when the beta opens people will be exposed to something similar to this:
It already got quite the backlash when posted, been from mid-2017, so what to expect from CU's beta is something I wonder.

Yeah but it's a real beta so the game should not look finished.
This is why some people need to stay away from indy games and betas. Well, except for the big developers "It's beta" but it's really just a stress test before launch.

Na, if this announcement is bigger than Beta 1, I still think an actual release date is possible.
Stuff that fucked them up has already been unfucked. I guess new staff could be a big announcement from CSE's point of view, but from our point of view I can't see it being big news unless they announce new features (which I can't see happening) or confirm a release schedule as a result of the new hires.

If if doesn't come with a projected beta and or release date its a mostly useless announcement really to say they are unstuck.

I agree since there have been people waiting for years they should at least hint when Beta is coming if this announcement isn't beta and bigger. Pretty sure it is bigger only in their minds.

Bigger than Beta is pretty subjective, and I waged MJ already regrets saying it. The Beta announcement is one of the other 2 major things coming before the end of the month, likely this or next Friday, so even if he is teasing us like I used to tease my dog when I was a kid pretending to throw her a cookie while holding it in my hand, we don't have to wait much longer.
What I worry with CU is that when the beta opens people will be exposed to something similar to this: <snip>
It already got quite the backlash when posted, been from mid-2017, so what to expect from CU's beta is something I wonder.
What I worry about is people - who may very well not be current backers of the game - clamouring to see something and when something is released bashing it for not being polished, running well, poorly optimised and so on. And if they don't put something out its a case of why so secretive, MJ will never finish the game, its been x years already, yada, yada, yada.

Honestly it’s been five years. There should be something to see at this point. The fact that we are in this position really falls back on MJ. He knows this and he knows what hyping this announcement does to expectations. Let’s see what Thursday brings

Yep.
Wouldn't it have been wonderful if some big company had come in and given them $140M. There are games that took longer even without allowing for the "pre-development time" we historically didn't know about.
Does it grate? Absolutely. Options available: walk away or hope for the best. If the latter though no one should expect miracles. Remember Darkfall eventually saw the light of day! Maybe the announcement is in regard to publishing.
So, the announcement is bigger than formal announcement of beta 1. That doesn't leave many options.
1. Announcing release date

Nope. Old school beta was actually a beta. Things were added, often in a very buggy state, frequently. Beta wasn't even feature complete. The entire realm of Hibernia was added to the DAoC beta extremely late in the process. Like, weeks before release.
Old school betas were all closed. Most people didn't even know they were going on. Even with WAR features were still being added to the (closed) beta. The whole conept of beta as an almost finished product is still a new one. But it is what most younger gamers have come to expect. Modern beta is basically marketting and maybe stress testing the servers.
Old school beta testing was actually about testing. Finding, documenting, and reporting bugs. Testing new features and providing feedback. Modern betas...not so much.
OK, so they posted a link to the "announcement of the announcement" newsletter on MOP. The newsletter says nothing about this announcement being bigger than beta 1, so I'm now back to being convinced that this will just be the beta 1 announcement that was promised last month.

Well, considering their beta is approaching 2 years behind schedule, I think that announcing that you're unfucked is a pretty big deal. Or at least it was if what @cameltosis said is legit.

Pretty much this. I really can't stand when developers make a big "hullabaloo" about some announcement and it's anticlimactic for the players. If one is going to make an announcement make it pertinent to the audience you are addressing. Also make sure you correctly assess the scope of the announcement.
For example, If you are going to announce a new team member by no means do you make an announcement that "an announcement is going to be made." Just make one announcement and move on.
