Developers are making mmorpgs easy because they "think" it appeals to everyone.

The "large majority" being mmoprg players are gone from this site, leaving all the fashion players here (BDO,ESO,FF14,SWTOR)...... Very few of the "majority" are sticking around.

It's like this:
Most of the high school senior class stopped going to school because it turned easy and boring.  The few that are sticking it out like to play football.  But second graders have taken over the high school and they want to play a simple game of kick ball.

The entire high school class that had stopped going is obviously STILL ALIVE, just not going to school.

Important:
Who is to blame here ?
- The second graders will blame the seniors.
- The high school will blame the seniors.
- The real answer is the high school....... It's imposable to prove !

So why is this impossible to prove ?....... You can't poll the second graders, their second graders.  You can't poll the high school, they don't understand the change.  You can't poll the high school class, they are no where to be found !

Since the "large majority" of real mmorpg players are gone, and no where to be found, any poll conducted would use the fashion players (BDO,ESO,FF14,SWTOR).

This is why Pantheon will be big............ The "large majority" are still alive, there just pushed to the side, millions of them.  If you see one please offer them a cup of coffee, it's cold !!!!

There may be a "large silent majority" of MMORPG players out there, but Pantheon isn't necessarily going to be the game they are looking for.

I'm waiting on "DAOC 2", others want SWG 2, or AC3, or FFXI part deux, or heck, even WOW 2, and Pantheon likely will appeal to mostly former EQ1 / Vanguard fans, and their numbers were never legion.

Younger / newer gamers (like my 25 year old son), they found their games such as LOL, Destiny 2, Overwatch, PUBG, and others, they play those newer style games by the millions

When I discuss the revival of Classic WOW, Pantheon or CU my son and his friends listen with mild interest.....then go off to play Overwatch....

Also, questionable whether Pantheon or any of these small, underfunded indie MMORPG game developers can deliver a reasonable quality game which will appeal to many gamers in this day and age.

Hasn't happened yet, but its still possible.

You crack me up... in almost each of your post, you invoke some kind of imaginary majority you'd be part of, without any proofs, numbers, reliable source, nothing.

And each time, you think I'm mean for pointing at that nonsense. Yet you do it again and again.

Maybe you need that kind of imaginary stuff to make you feel important, or at least try to make your posts feel more important than they are?

The point of this post.........." It's imposable to prove "

Actually I was waiting to see how long before you showed up.  I'm thinking Jean-Luc isn't gonna like this :)

But then if MMORPG.com changed hands, wouldn't they become the majority? And what second graders come here to post on the forums? And wouldn't the majority be WoW players, who play an MMO that is like all the other MMOs mentioned?

    IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!

It boils down to preferences.  Just because you prefer something that others don't doesn't make them wrong.  The great myth that the venerable old school games were the true MMORPGs and everything else is garbage because they don't fit the mold is rubbish.  Times change, preferences change, ppl change.  It's not a matter of wrong or right, it's a matter of what's right here, right now and enjoying the moment.  Living in the past is a curse of many.  Don't live in the mythical MMORPG garden of eden.

A lot of the older gamers are still here but have given up on 15-20 year old games. When there is nothing challenging we either pick something that is at least acceptable or quit the genre.

There is a lot of old games I really liked but I ain't going back to M59, Lineage or EQ anyways.

And yes, I back Pantheon but I easily admit I play a bit GW2 on and off, it is the only MMORPG I play at the moment, at least I enjoy it now and then.

The high school class graduated, got jobs, and founded families. One part of their lives is past.

However there are two problems here:

First problem is that you, sire, don't understand that change and refuse to admit that most of your peers don't have as much time or interest for games any more.

Second problem is that you're unable to accept change and try to find something to lay blame on.

Be careful sir, you may just find yourself sitting on a park bench during retirement watching the pigeons all day.

You put too much faith in video games to entertain you for all eternity.  Reality is, the kids of today will have very little interest in them when they get older.  It's like most things done to death, you tire of them and move along.  That's why you can't find a game that entertains you like it used to.  Common sense man.

Learn from your uneducated kickball players... try something different.  Unless pigeon watching is what you find entertaining.

I think Vrika sort of hits the nail on the head with his "first problem"

People just don't have the same amount of time to play games like they did in their youth. I know I for one fall into that category. As much as I'd like to sit around and play Fallout - Halo - Morrowind and the like for hours on end, I just don't have the time anymore

And also the younger generation today has a lot more that they can do from their handheld devices i.e. cell phones that we just didn't have when we were younger. Not only do they have the internet + limitless entertainment in their hands at all times, but it's faster and higher quality than we had

There's definitely still a market for games, and it seems like that market has just shifted to the demand of more mobile based games people can pick up and put down whenever they want. As far as sitting down for hours and playing, I think that's going to shift into VR type of gameplay which I'm super excited about

I loved Lineage 2 and Love Black Desert.

Anyone who played old school MMOs that don't understand why things the way they are now just baffles me. Think most of those type of people are living in a world of rose tinted glasses completely ignoring that those games were terrible by todays standards. If you think a majority of any player base wants to camp out for a spawn to kill it for DAYS just to have it sniped by some ass who appeared right before it spawned or sit in front of a cave to wait FOR HOURS for people to show up just so you can continue to play then you're delusional. Most of what made good stories in old school MMOs was based on the horrible ideas back then that you can't replicate since no one will play by those terrible standards now.

Somehow I think I would agree with you, if only I could understand what the OP was saying. Seeing that he talks about second graders and senior students I am guessing he's from the US, so English IS his main language, which leaves me completely baffled: either my understanding of the language isn't as good as I though, or you fellas don't speak English over there any more.

I'm in the US and I'm scratching my head at the comparison.

As others have said, people and times change.  Games have changed right along with them.  Games some of us old timers found enjoyable, the new crop of gamers don't.  The internet generation are used to getting access to everything instantly and many lack the patients it took to play and truly enjoy the old games.

I have pretty much moved on from MMORPG's.  I drop in WoW and FFXIV for a couple months each year, but that is the extent of it.  I have time, but I choose to spend it doing things with my two teen daughters which I'm raising myself.  Todays mmo's don't interest me and I have moved onto SP games which I get more depth. game play, and story in anyway.

You either adapt or move on.  I chose to move on.

Pantheon will do as good as Vanguard did.
Also to put in a real world analogy...

Vanguard was a game asked by many to come out. They wanted an EQ-esque experience of the good old times.

It was buggy at launch, but fixed later on

So...if no one played it when it was fixed...it goes like this. Ignore the car brand if its not your dream car, but its just an example :P

"Wow I was just given a highend porche! This is my dream car. But the wheels are flat and the air conditioner doesn't work"

    A. Do you throw away your dream car?

    Or

    B. do you get it fixed and then drive it when its fixed and show it off?

If you choose A, that means it wasn't really your dream car. And that is what most people chose for Vanguard.

I actually think we have many old school posters on the site, as shown when MMO recently became a ubiquitous term for any co-op game then any persistent online world.

I have to say as well that the "fashion players" are playing some of the best MMOs we have, ESO, FF14 etc. There is not a AAA old school MMO still running. So we play what we can.

Well, seeing as how the most frequent posters are ones that I've seen around here forever, I don't think the assumption is correct, we have a lot of old school gamers that have been on this site of at least a decade.

Once WoW hit it big, MMORPGs no longer served a small niche of like-minded gamer nerds, but began catering to a more mainstream audience.  That audience had different tastes, and the genre changed to accompany those tastes.

Once the genre recedes back to its original niche, you will see a change in the design philosophies to reflect this.  I believe it's clear it's already begun.

As shared world games like Destiny becone larger and larger, the MMORPG genre slides back towards the niche it originally spawned from.

Ok, I don't think I've ever used my join date for bragging rights before but if you check you will see I joined in February of 2005.  I see that that the OP joined in 2007.  So, delete5230, does that make me better than you?

And besides, aren't you the guy who was all gung-ho to play project 99 and then when you got it set up you didn't even last a week?  I mean, I bitch about the fact that I'm sure Pantheon will be too "no-life" for me but even I have a level 55 character in P99.

You talk about Pantheon like it will be the greatest thing ever but when given the chance to play the closest thing to it that exists currently.....you don't.
