Can online game sellers be trusted?

Talking about these corps that have websites only and no retail outlets.  NOT talking about Target, Walmart, GameStop, Toys-R-Us, or even Amazon or Steam, etc.  Pointing to less known/establised sites like GamersGate.  Rumor has it that website retailers have maybe 100 legit copies but the rest are stolen codes.  What do you think?  Are these sites safe or to risky?

    I've used sites like GOG and Humble Bundle for years and wouldn't use a site unless it's been around for awhile no matter how good the deals looked.
