Well, by the mere nature of a headstart you will be out in front of everyone else, but it seems like they are making a valid attempt to try and limit that edge:

There will be headstart servers at launch, and non-headstart servers. The headstart servers, during headstart will have the node system deactivated. Headstart is a necessary tool used that provides us the window of time to correct any errors/bugs during a live launch event that may pop up last minute. But in order to avoid the P2W aspect that it may provide we will be turning off the node system during the headstart period. Players involved in Headstart will still be able to explore the world, and play the game, but they will not be directing the course of development on those servers.

Starvault's reponse to criticism related to having a handful of players as the official "test" team for a supposed MMO: "We've just have another 10ish folk kind enough to voulenteer added tot the test team" (SIC) This explains much about the state of the game :-)
