Funny but not worth flipping out about. At this point I would only be interested in how SC handles this. At this point we dont even know if the higher ups know.

If SC has a legal department then chances are they are more than aware of what is public domain and what is not, chances are they are just sitting back having a laugh and passing the popcorn around right now :p

The issue is that we're talking about someone who has taken a public domain PSD, put some text into it and licensed it. You can't own words, ask Donald Trump, he tried that already. Like I could find the same PSD, place "Guaranteed" in it and I could NOT copyright it. I could easily try selling it to someone stupid enough to buy it, but I can't copyright it.

Anyway, I was able to figure out who the "original" artist was, if anyone actually wants to add him to facebook, PM me. I'm trying to keep my Facebook to double digit friends, so I'm not really interested, but if someone actually needs to hear it from the horses mouth that he didn't create the content, let me know and I will PM you his name so you can add him to Facebook.

And unless the ORIGINAL creator of that clipart comes forth and make a claim... There can be a million companies slapping their watermark on it.

Does not give them any more right...

That all depends on whether the author/artist has asked a company to act on his behalf.

I know!!!! It's ridiculous and hilarious.

Yeah, I can post my transcript that I got finally. If you go to the site the artist has attribution on the image itself, and if you google that username it comes up with a person who is from the same country as listed on the profile on the graphics site. I'll try to post over on reddit if I remember to later, just on my way out for a bit.

So like $200 million isn't enough?  I mean are they struggling somehow and therefore need to "borrow" art?  Haven't you wackos seen more than enough of the "coming soon!" videos by now, seriously how many years of that are you going to continue to swallow?

[mod edit] I hope for all of your sakes that this vaporware releases some time before 2025, otherwise some of you whales are going to drain your kids' college funds buying "ships" you can't fly.

Great, thanks for posting that. So it seems they have a distribution license granted from the copyright holder.
So assuming he hasn't signed the rights to his artwork to another company he would have to pursue a cease and desist himself.

Putin hacked CIG and placed it there to ruin Chris Roberts.  So now CIG is going to build a wall around their office and make Putin pay for it.  Chris will make CIG great again.

Exactly!!! More than that, though, it's not his own work. The issue is that he's using something like a PSD template that might be widely available, like this here, which is from the same site, different artist, and then he's just typing some text in making use of the same filters for his text which are on the PSD file. So this is what I mean, it's not JUST an issue of copyright, it's a matter of the person who created the file can't copyright the file because it's created from another piece of licensed material (it's not original). So if I were to buy that same PSD template, I could just punch in my own text and the two images would be indistinguishable from each other. So that's where the problem arises.

BTW, the creator's name is Arkadi Bojaršinov

Perhaps that is the case, perhaps not. It strikes me as strange that a company would commit to the contractual terms of a distibution license without confirming the person they are leasing from is the owner of the original artwork, if it was so easy to slap stuff over someone else's art (or public domain art) why would they bother paying royalties when they could simply do it themselves?

Anyhow, I feel this is kind of besides the point. What matters is that CIG's artists are repeatedly taking other people's art and using it where they don't have the right to use it.
It's a shitty practice and something that they need to get a handle on.

Well the distribution site isn't liable since they aren't entering into any contract, they're simply acting as a facilitator, right? I've operated some font websites for the better part of a decade now and I have to maintain licenses for all licensed fonts that I have, which is a fucking nightmare to do (for a few thousand fonts). So it simply isn't happening with 74 million images, lol. So that's probably why they push that obligation to prove licensing to the user who submitted the content. I would say that stock graphics are so expensive simply because they aren't dealing in volume. Realistically, you could have a freelancer make an image for you more quickly and less expensively.

I don't disagree with you, though, about them stealing web graphics. As I said before, I don't necessarily think it's for the nefarious reasons that some might, but I do think it's just being lazy. It's not the first I've seen of it in a game, though. Shoot, it's not even the first time I've seen it in SC, lol. I can understand how it happens, though. An art directory says "Something like that...." pointing to the Internet and then they just take it for redesign. Just watch, I'll bet that there is something implemented on or before release which is not that far off the original.

Petty as this is (and yes, it is petty) their art department clearly needs more supervision. This shit is embarrassing... especially when they know full well that detractors will be looking at everything with a magnifying glass.
