There is a difference between 64bit precision and 64bit computations. It has to do with seeing an object millions of miles away and also seeing your hand right in front of you at the same time without getting everything all messed up looking. There are various ways of doing this but the way CIG claimed to have done it was indeed revolutionary for gaming. Hence you can walk all over millions of planets without ever seeing a loadscreen. And that little dot in the sky is an actual planet and not just a picture of one.
Normally you would see the dot but it would not actually be the real planet but just an image of it. With 64 bit precision you are actually looking at the living real planet at its current state.
