Cost of MMO Question

BestinnaBestinna Member UncommonPosts: 190
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much it would cost to make pre-alpha demo videos like the ones Ashes of Creation has?

The cost for combat skills, models, trees etc. etc. functional enough to get in-game solo player to record some gameplay. (with graphics and mechanics exactly like these)

I see two ways to answer this.  If you mean making just the video after you've already made the game, that costs next to nothing.  That doesn't look like fancy effects made custom just for the video, but only moving the camera around in the game world.

If you mean making enough of a game from scratch to make that video, that's probably also pretty cheap.  If you've only created 0.2% of your game world, you can readily make a video that shows off that 0.2% while not showing anything from the other 99.8%.  Making 0.2% of a game world isn't that expensive.

Notice also what the video doesn't show.  There are no mobs, no combat, no players, no UI, no crafting, no network code, and none of a whole lot of other essential game mechanics.  It shows some artwork and that's it.  They've presumably done some work that isn't shown in that video, but if the goal is getting just far enough along to be able to create that video, that's not very far.
