I wouldn't sub at $2.99, but I wouldn't be offended if it was an option. The ads are atrocious on this site, but I understand you gotta pay the rent somehow.

I would pay a buck a month maybe :pleased:

$3 a YEAR maybe but $3 a month is higher than I would be willing to go for this site.

I also fear ye olde slippery slope where once a $3 per month thing is in, the site becomes completely inaccessible otherwise if you adblock, or the annoyance thing of yours becomes MUCH more annoying.
I used to pay more than $3 a month for video game magazines.

True but it is completely in control of the people that run the site as to which direction it could go. It does however seem to work fine for massivelyop where they give their subscribers/donators earlier access to their content then the gen pop which is why  if you happen to look at their page they seem behind other sites and it is completely add free other than patreon and an amazon thing.
I remember paying something like 50-60 USD a year for gaming magazines back in the day. Asking for $36 a year is completely reasonable for an ad-free experience.

I don't think I would pay to lose the adds on a website even one I frequent as much as this one. Its like a slippery slope. I may pay $50 a month for having no ads anywhere on anything, plus no spammy phone calls or people at my door =)

Actually, what is the monthly cost per user on the site?
  • TorvalTorval Member LegendaryPosts: 18,401
So I thought a bit about this and how I would be willing to support the site. I'm not interested in another recurring bill, but I would be interested in one off payments to the same effect. That is I would be more interested in buying 3, 6, or 12 month blocks of ad-free time than I would be just keeping an ongoing payment up.

I also noticed a few interesting things about advert delivery in the last few days. Since the Microsoft summer update I've been using Edge with Adblock Plus.

When I have APB enabled but allow for non-intrusive adverts I still get the still graphic/text ads - about 3 to 4 per banner block. This is probably why some people see 12 ads a page because there are three banner blocks. I think these text ads look a lot better, are less distracting, and less "intrusive" than the flash/gif based banner ads.

The site runs a lot better in both Firefox and Edge when ads are disabled/blocked. There is scripting running when adblock is disabled, and adverts are allowed, that really slows down page load and performance.

Removing Flash doesn't resolve the annoyance of animated ads because most of the ads served now seem to be animated GIFs and not Flash.

Optional $2.99/month? O.o  Good luck with that. I am sure there will be those that will pony up the monthly fee for preferred treatment (no ads, access to beta keys, give aways, etc.), I just won't be one of them. :p

    Depends.

People can already block ads for free...

BUT, if for that subscription you include:

    - Personal @mmorpg.com email.
(choosing any username, not necessarily same as forum name)

    - Subscribers only contests and giveaways.
(to avoid the 1 day old accounts getting all keys).

    - Different username colours and visual effects, possibly other avatar options too.
    (think like something awful forums)

    - Subscriber only live chat.
(so we could hang around there)

On top of my head, those would be the perks I would gladly pay to.

But 2,90 just for adblock? No.

No thanks. Between amazon prime, Google play, Hulu,  Netflix, car insurance, cell phone,  Internet, mmo of choice, etc. Id say I have enough subs in my life. Also the quality of content on the site has steadily gone down overtIme IMO.

I won't vote in the poll because neither answer applies to me.  I won't pay for an ad free website.  I don't use ad blockers.  If you add a fee for no advertisements I'm okay with that because it won't effect me.

I might decide to never frequent this site again if you decide to divide people into subscribers/donors or non-subscribers/donors with labels or different levels of access or benefits.

Will there also be a cash shop? And seeing that theres a subscription option will the said cash shop only sell cosmetic items or will there be p2w items as well?

I think these are very good and reasonable suggestions.

But most of it they can't do since they have no control over the forum-software and what they could do, they already said they won't be doing (subscriber contests, priorized key distribution etc.)

IMO one of the reasons why this website is in this sorry state is that whatever someone is suggesting, they refuse it and some weeks later have another form of advertising as their own solution.
Just look at how many people have spoken out against the design of that new website and made a plethora of suggestions for the better. Afaik NOTHING from that went into it because there were always "reasons..."

Good suggestions - maybe instead of just subscribers only giveaways, they can have also giveaways (free sponsored game keys) for everyone but block on 1st day of listing for subscribers only - otherwise they might not get view hits from the crowd who flock to game sites in search of free keys.

If you add a sub prepare yourself for all the "why are you running articles about this it isn't an mmorpg and now I am paying for content so I am justified for wondering"

I just use ublock origin, no ads anywhere. Not even in youtube videos, or on twitch. If you'd just use simple non-animated banner ads I am sure people would unblock this site. I started using adblockers once the annoying animated gif banners came out, been using it since, and its only gotten worse. I also use a cookie blocker, that blocks any cookie except what I specifically allow, then disconnect which gets rid of all the facebook/twitter/google crap that riddles pages with social media garbage I couldn't care less about.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

I like subscription options, but there is no website in existence worth $2.99/mo. It would have to be half that (at the very most) for me to consider it.

I'm not interested, but I wouldn't mind the option either.

    Why don't you have one?
We may add one. But we want to hear your thoughts first. :)
I don't see it being anything but a positive way to generate revenue. While your at it ad a tiered cost say 3 5 10 bucks with early pick on beta keys and special offers etc, plus ad a donate button.
Worst idea ever. This would turn people away, including myself.
So when it comes to actually supporting the site and making it so they don't have to rely on junk like scarlet blade and league of angels your out. heh
I agree with Nanfoodle, but for me, you're talking about more than just a subscription.  You're talking perks now.  Pay more for a better chance at beta keys, offers, etc.  So you want this site to echo MMOs now?  How about adding a cash shop, too?  Buy t-shirts, can coolers, wall decorations/posters, coffee cups, what have you?

Wait.  Those are real things.  More like forum titles, better sig space, sparkly avatar borders and the like.  Gotta be digital data only, not real life things.

No. However I wouldn't mind making the odd voluntary donation.

If the current ads on this site are supposed to make people more interested in an ad-free sub option, then they are working quite well on me.

What the hell is "Flower Knight Girl"?

I seriously cannot browse this website in the office or...well...any public place as everyone around me would think I am a weird anime loving pedofile.

    Edit: Which I am not.

Id pay for a ad free sub.

Yes, I am happy to financially support things I like, and I actively avoid adverts because I hate some corporate shit treating me like I am some fucking robotic moron.

So if I can choose to pay rather than sit through these arsehole adverts, then I'll pay and ensure my money goes directly to the content creator.

If I'm honest, you're just not worth it, stick to advertising $

Wooo, It's gunna be rough for the admin's...

We have some yes votes with stipulations that will end up costing the site even more money

and we also have some no votes that are just plain stupid and have nothing to do with the point.

    LOL good luck
