    ! - WoW
    2 - ESO
    3 - GW2
    4 - Lineage 2
5 - Hard to say, but probably Aion, Tera or BDO

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

I guess that'd depend on where, specifically, you're talking about. In the West, I'm pretty sure it's still WoW by a fair margin, which is about to become larger in August. As of January this year, Lineage 1 is still the most popular game in KR. I don't know where the metrics for China and Japan can be found.

WoW still has the most players based on what I've read on the internet. From what I've seen personally a couple of months ago, you won't see many people out in the open world if that's what you're looking for.

ESO always has a lot of people on everywhere when I play, but it's a mega-server, so I don't know how many people actually play the game.

GW2 is always very busy when I log in, but I think that depends on the server. My characters are on Blackgate.

I don't play it, but it seems like a lot of people are into BDO right now.

FFXIV seems to have a solid pop from what I've read and from what I saw the last time I logged on about 3-4 months ago.

ESO in the west lol, really!  and WOW in the east lmfao.

Just look up Dungeon Fighter and then Drakensang Online for the west.  You also might want to take a look at Runescape.

In order (This is of course NA):

    1. WOW
    2. FFXIV
    3. ESO
    4. GW2
    5. Choose half a dozen games that have basically the same sufferable population for this spot and beyond

One thing's for sure: those games are carbon copies of each other.  It's unfortunate, but this genre seems stale now.  Loyalty to a game isn't as high as it used to be, so I don't blame the devs for going for the fast buck.  But then again, that is a bit self-fulfilling.

I agree with WoW being number one because their number are all over the place but where do people get numbers for the others, especially ESO as they don't share their numbers.

Perhaps the Op post should of stated he meant the west because WOW is not in the lead and ESO is far from the lead. Now if you are talking about subscription then WOW is tops.

The op should of been more specific because it's not cut and dry.

    After looking at a few websites that do their best to keep track of such things, I found several surprises.  If you look at worldwide numbers (and several companies don't list active players, so these are estimates, but the ratings were consistent across several sites);

    1 - WoW
    2 - FFXIV
    3 - GW2
    4 - ESO
    5 - SW:TOR

I did not expect FFXIV and SWTOR to be top 5 most populated games, even if you factor in world wide players.  SWTOR is probably because of The Force Awakens and the upcoming Rogue One.

    #1 = this site's hype meter. Totally P2W too =P
Trolling, being trolled, getting banned, yelling at mods, getting perma banned, making new accounts, and still trolling this site since 2004 =D

I'll save you some time and tell you that nobody can answer this question because none of them give active player numbers.  They only give misleading numbers that are mostly made up of people who haven't played for years.

The only thing anyone knows is the undisputed market leader is wow, nothing else is even 1/4 the size.

    That's because they aren't, it's misreported numbers.

Lineage is 1 ... by far

Eve, because they have balls to show concurrent users 24/7 even during times of low activity.

    That list looks very plausible.

I would find it hard to believe that in the west the top 5 aren't:

    WoW
    SWTOR
    ESO
    GW2
    FFXIV

WoW is #1 for certain.  The others are in any order.  I cant imagine any other game even close to those, save for launch periods.

Worldwide?  I don't care.  The east is a much different market than the west.

Why is WoW no1 for certain? WoW has 3.5mil subscribers but the majority of those are in the east, so only looking at 1 - 1.5 mil players in the west. ESO sold 1.5mil copies on console in the first month of release (compared to estimated 700k pc sales in first year) so it is plausible that ESO can be beating WoW in the west these days. Obviously I can't know for certain, just saying that WoWs superiority is not guaranteed.

I would, on the other hand, be very surprised if SW:TOR is still in the top 5. That game dipped below 500k subscribers within a few months of launch and continued to bleed players until F2P. That stabilised the playerbase and increased earnings, but that was also 3 years ago now. I would be extremely surprised if that game had 250k+ active players any more.

To be fair, I don't think I could come up with a list of most populated MMOs in the west. Whilst I think WoW and ESO are safe bets, I'm sure there are MMOs that aren't even on my radar that are still popular, or MMO-Lite games that continue to do well (like runescape).

Sounds about right in the west and Japan (if you count south Korea Lineage get in place 2 and if you only count the west FFXIV will get down a few places, a lot of it's players are japanese).

But your numbers certainly are not worldwide, Lineage have over 3 million players and is P2P like Wow (source: NC Soft). And there are several Chinese MMOs who might have huge numbers, as well as some Japan only MMOs we never count on western sites. Not sure exactly how large those games are though but one would think the top Chinese game at least should be in the top 5, they do have many MMO players after all.

Even Wow will be far smaller if you only count westerners but it will still be number one, just not by so much.

Isn't it traditional for someone to start quoting X-Fire numbers in a thread like this ?
