Before Age of Shadows, then UO was the greatest game ever. It had A LOT of players. About 1.mil that logged in every day, this was not usual in 2000.
Then Age of Shadows came and it destroyed UO completely, at least that is was I think. The game became so.. Un Ultima Online.. It was not the same as before and it probably never will be either.
So to all of those you loved UO before AoS, lets pray that EAG makes the game better.

Was UO best before AoS or is it best now, after AoS?

hanoreth!! i say HAIL to that! but like we see in human history... nothing glorious and good last forever so what can we do. only remember the golden memoryes. and find something what might be near the same. lot new nice games coming . lets hope some of them kick as like UO in Oldsch00l!
RESPECT!

Ten Join a Day I dont say
You're probably right, sadly UO will never be the same.
Indeed, lots of new games are coming. I have only tried World of Warcraft though, but it seems to work nicely.. Although there are not so good RP-society there yet.. Things will get better

errr, UO has never hit a million users to my knowledge. If they had I think it would have made some news since EQ 1 held the record for most subs from an American MMO before WoW (which either have only ever been bested by the Lineage series I beleive to date). I don't think they ever even hit 400k subs at any given time.
UO was out far too early to get that kind of subscription base. The concept of paying a monthly fee for gaming then was ludicrous to most people.

Age of Shadows= Diablo 2 ripoff.
I must disagree.. UO got an award for the most played MMO game in 2000 or something. Then it was about 900k

Age of Shadows brought 500k players to the game, however, I still dislike the setup. Woulda been nice to get that many players from a random population burst than from a Diablo 2 expansion
But you cannot disagree that AoS changed UO completely. Its not the same UO-feeling...

I can not speak to AoS as I pretty much quit playing several months after we got Trammel. However at no point in UO history have they gotten above 250k paying subscribers. If you are including people playing on private servers you could add another possibly 100k to that but that is a high number.
At launch they had about 30-50k subs which was much more than they ever dreamed that they would have at the time and crashed the servers, and you want to talk about lag...
Still the most fun I have ever had in a MMO.
I would really like to see this press release on this before I beleive it.

I think your estimate is alittle light, maybe double it actually.

Exactly, and it's getting old. Deal with it. Don't you guys have anything else to talk about?
MmmMM, no?
If you don't like the topic anymore you really don't have to click the little link that takes you too this thread. Don't you have anything else to do then complain about the fact that you fell into the trap and came into the thread by your own doing?

Ultima Online remains the greatest MMOG of all time. Subscription numbers do not prove a games quality. You can not equate a game's subscription base to the quality of the game. Ultima Online is to the MMOG genre what The Godfather is to movies. Just because 1.5 Million people play WoW doesn't make it the greatest MMOG ever. I played WoW for 6 months and enjoyed it very much, but I played Ultima Online for almost four years. Just imagine if Ultima Online had come out today with all the latest graphics and some of it's features details tailored to today's players. It would blow the MMOG genre wide open. Unfortunately UO is a victim to the time of it's creation and will probably be overshadowed in history by EverQuest just because it had a bigger subscription base which was made possible by UO.
The key to a great MMOG is Freedom
Well said.. Well said indeed:)

Ben_71, may write a nice sentiment.
HOWEVA....you cannot deny that expansions to the game have diluted and ruined it as well as the lack of attention by the developers to bugs, 3rd party programs, scripters in the game, and placing their focus on what parts to work on next were severly on the wrong path.
I say expansions, because Samurai Empire, was not a fully developed expansion. Mondain's legacy proves they have no foresight to make Ultima ONline unique, plus I think the best criticism of Mondain's Legacy is how much it will invalidate the Expansion Lord blackthorn's Revenge.
I think Mondain's Legascy will maybe get some old players to if now start to play again, but at least try it.. But it will not draw any new players.. Thats my opinion.
