I have no problem getting into VR or playing the hype game with a VR game.....but it's all about the GAME.....VR is just a tool.  There have been many gadgets over the past thirty years, but it always comes back to the golden question.

    Is the GAME any good?

I remember the Don Bluth games in the 80s.  The critical, smash hit was Dragon's Lair.....he put out a few more, and none of them were as good as Dragon's Lair.  They all followed the same format, had the same animation but they were all boring (Space Ace was just ok).

Before that, the massive boom from cartridge games in the early 80s.  Pac Man was kill of all media, and there were about a thousand WOW-Clones of Pac Man....and they all were totally inferior.

On and on through the new genres, the newest platforms, the newest gadgets....in the end it all comes down to one thing.  Is the GAME any good?

So I looked through all the VR titles, and most of they just appear to be glorified TECH demos.

    again....the short list

    Minecraft
    Elite Dangerous
    Eve Valkire
    Adr1ft

you are looking for a console title and you dont consider the fact that before consoles were aviable to actually buy from the store the titles you are wanting to see didnt exist either.

    how about this one?
    http://www.roadtovr.com/preview-vr-sports-challenge-turns-mvp-always-meant/
    or
    http://www.roadtovr.com/project-cars-v7-0-patch-brings-more-oculus-rift-enhancements/

look pretty hard hitting games to me

or the other 30 titles that have been announced here lately as part of the 'release' of Oculus

It's no secret that the industry is pushing this technology hardcore, but myself and pretty much everyone I game with are laughing at the ridiculous prices.

They're not gonna get that number much above 15% if they can't reign in their greed by about $200 bucks at least.
and I keep saying my last monitor costed me $700 and doesnt provide even remotely near the experience that VR does.

    but we shall see.

Thus far it seems like companies are very hard core about it, people on my facebook who are not gamers and not techy heads have started to talk about it. its not even out yet...the wave is strong at this point and its going to take something MAJOR to put it out. all those people that have tried it at trade shows over the  years? all the postive reviews?
I guess we just have different needs.  I spent less than $700 on all three of my monitors combined and they give me exactly the experience that I, personally, want.

I would no more spend $700 on a single monitor than I would some 1st gen tech that may completely fail to launch.

If it launches (By that, I mean not dead tech in 2 years),  when the price drops by hundreds of dollars, and when it isn't the size of a smart car strapped to my face, then I'll be happy to buy into VR.  I will not, repeat, not beta test 1st gen garbage at those prices.

I have a feeling that people are gonna look at the Oculus one day in much the same we look back on laserdisc players and chuckle.  Sure, we eventually got movies on discs, but boy did they have the format wrong.

I think not buying 1st generation is perfectly fine however, what about the modem? our family bought one of the first generation modems was that a bad choice? nope.

also, from what I have been told the CV1 of Oculus 'feels about as intrusive to your head as a baseball cap'

I'm sorry, but I've seen people wearing these things, and they seem about as intrusive as strapping a glazed ham to your face.

They can say what they want, but they're gonna have to get thinner by about 50% before I'm interested.

VR holds 0 interest for me at all for several reasons:

A; gaming headsets I avoid unless I'm actively using them for team speak voice chat etcetera.  the second they are not needed...across the room they fly.  And they are most certainly less intrusive than any VR concept.
B; the immersion argument; if a game NEEDS a helmet to be immersive it's not that great a game to begin with.  Good writing good content is where I look for immersion; gimmicks not so much.  I play games for  game play
    C. Cost by itself isn't a huge factor for me but with the prior two annoyances I feel no desire to pay for the privilege of being annoyed.

EDIT as some have said I suspect the porn industry will have more a following in VR than gaming over all ever will.

    so yeah

currently there is 176 games, 100 in the works for this year, I have played Elite Dangerous in VR and its friggin awesome although the DK kits a little limiting in resolution, minecraft and I think guitar hero.

    dont worry, they are coming
I should have specified. I meant VR ONLY games that are groundbreaking, none of which exist atm.

VR died the moment they announced those prices for Oculus

anyway, maybe they can try again in a decade just like 3D TV

A game, or a movie, or TV show, a play, a concert, or even a book - these things can all pull you in and drown out the "real" world...

    If they are good.

Don't need to wear a headset, or 3D glasses, or motion controls, or photo realistic 4K 120FPS anything.

All just a gimmick, just a show. To "dazzle" you into believing what you are seeing/experiencing is better than it actually is.

That EVE:Valkyrie game or whatever? Still not going to be as good as Tie-Fighter.

    It's all just a gimmick.
This is exactly how I feel and dont get why people out there get this.  Its all just a gimmick to get you to spend money that will not enhance your gaming at all.  You are also likely to get occipital neuralgia like I have from just wearing the head gear, at least my injury to my neck was through playing sports.

Occulus is less than the cost of an iPhone 6S.  Both are purchased for their entertainment value.

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

In '99 my Voodoo Banshee came with some shutterglasses, Quake 2 was awesome with that. Since then I have seen many 3D devices that were supposed to take over the market and change gaming forever.
    It just never happened.
I guess this technology is still far from being market ready.

I'm interested in VR just as I was interested in Google Glass, but their price point was to high for a first generation project.  Glad I didn't get one.  Same with VR, to expensive for something so speculative.  I have no problem waiting to see if this thing sinks or swims.

Eventually VR will be the norm but like 3-d TV's it hasn't really caught on. I still enjoy watching a 3-d movie from time to time but the current 3d content isn't exactly inspiring me. I think eventually VR will be the normal way to game but not for a few years.

if i could use VR right now....that would be awesome ,but nope i would need to buy a whole new PC just for it...and is a "newborn tech" ...u buy it and what u do with it ? im sure is awesome and game changing but not atm....
  • Octagon7711Octagon7711 Member LegendaryPosts: 9,000
I think the holo deck simulation stuff (AR) will win out over VR.  AR enhances what's going on around you  and VR seals you off from your environment and interactions with others in the room.

    The average person would need:

    VR headset: $700
    Brand new high-end GPU: $400
    VR games: $100+

So, before you can use this device, you're asking around $1200 from users.

And this is for unproven technology, it's perfectly possible that by december, VR gets declared a failure and you just lost $1200.

I purchase new hardware to play the games I'm interested in, and not just for the sake of owning it waiting for games to support it.

As soon as CCP supports VR on EVE I'll give it a look.
I'd come back to EVE then. And tranquility shall be no more.

There are only 2 games right now that truly great VR experiences, Elite and Eve:Valk.  That's not worth the price of entry at this point.

Once they put more titles out I'll look into buying.

I'll wait for the prices to drop a bit and more games to support it.

the pre-order of Oculus sold out in 1 hour and then they had to push the ship dates on all devices order after that hour to July.

People ARE running out to get these headsets.

    Sony? same thing...sold out

I think honestly everyone is at least "interested" but knowing what to expect from it,i am not interested in purchasing it.I am guessing i will be long dead before it's applications are actually any good or worth the purchase, right now we are not even close, likely at least 10 more years and then by that time the price will be retarded.
