Google Web Accelerator -- really works!

SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

If you haven't already downloaded this program, you have got to try it out. Just having it running with firefox, I've saved "27.1 seconds" just while my casual surfing in about 10 minutes. It's truly a great program, and it really does work! that's the best part of course

it's obviously just a simple program you download and run, while it's running you can check on its status on your system tray, it works with either internet explorer or firefox (probably more also, I'm not sure) and it does save you time.

Don't believe me? Try it yourself!

You can download it from http://www.originnow.com it's on the "Hosted Downloads" section, number 1. Go ahead, download it, I guarantee you won't regret it!

Yeah, right now my isp is having some "troubles" and im getting around 10kbs, with this accelerator im getting speeds as which I would get without any "troubles." The only problem is alot of people are flaming this accelerator in other fourms because it was made by google and they have a repuation with creating Gmail. Anyways I saved 3.9 minutes with my horrible ISP. I would be intrested in how long you all save in about 10 minutes.

I'll check it out later. I might download it from Google itself.

well that'd be a good idea, but they don't host it anymore. It is on Origin Now though.

They took the link down from their site. Right now they say that they have reached the max number of users. So Google will maybe let another acouple hundred in each day, but if you can't download it from them, here is where you can get it. This morning it was open for about 2-3 minutes before it filled up. I hear they are opening it little by little, but it still works even if you don't download it directly from google.

Yea, I was told by a friend to get it from the download page of google.com itself also

but unfortunately I made it there a few seconds after they had taken that page down (stopped letting people download it)

so I just went ahead and got it from origin now image

Must have been a large line for the download, everyone must have pounced on the download and suprised google or something of that nature because apparently it closed pretty fast. Bandwith problems is my guess but I seriously doubt that google would have bandwith problems.

Right now my time saved is at about 52 minutes. I used it about 2 hours, because I had a recent power outage and that left me motionless for about 5 hours. Anyways, does anyone know if that timer is correct or if its just a random number, right now if it was real, I would be giddy on how much time I saved.

I just downloaded this a while ago and it does work. Thanks for the tip! I was getting really annoyed with firefox, but now this has made it better. :)

  • ChopesChopes Member Posts: 297

Another thing that might help you out with firefox is about:config along with the Google Web Accelerator, I will look up for the post that was made in a few hours as I am currently having some internet/computer problems.

Happened to me as well, I think you have to restart your browser, not sure on that one. What browser are you using, and does it "feel" like it is working?

I am trying to reason with myself. Is 6 minutes saved really worth 300 megs of cache?

You can always delete the catch every now and then as I do. I was thinking about playing around with the source code and seeing if I can do anything about that lol.

    Important: Google Web Accelerator Threat!

Some of you may have noticed this:
    http://webaccelerator.google.com/

Its googles "great" new idea, erm not! Basically it stores your webpages, caches them, but also decides to screw up majorly. Have a look here:

There are no usernames, so I have no idea what that article is talking about. Also I belive that Google has no business trying to steal information about you, that have no use for it, and I really dont mind if they do save this information to make a profit. I am a large fan of gmail as well, which too was said in the begining to have large security risks because it saves certain information etc. etc. Still I love my Gmail, and I am loving my Google Web Accelerator.

People have hyped up the extremity of this problem a lot. Sure it exists, but in the smallest of forms, and what does it really matter? Are you enjoying google's free stuff? (yes, that includes the freakin' search engine). What does it matter? is it DIRECTLY affecting you?

It's overhyped to try to discredit google, don't pay attention to it.

  • ChopesChopes Member Posts: 297

I agree with Serien completely on this subject. I am getting great results from my Web Accelerator that google has provided, for that, I am willing to pay any price. Yes you heard me right ANY price. If google started a system in which you needed to pay to use their services, I would be first on their list to pay whatever price they asked for, as I am sure many other Google lovers would as well.

I have found one weakness with the system. You cannot go to Windows Update while using it. Furthermore, if you try, IE locks up. I had to Ctrl-Alt-Delete IE. I hope they fix this problem, either that, or allow us to choose which browser to install it to. I only use IE for Windows Update or a bastard web page that refuses to cooperate with Firefox.

If it dosen't affect you then great. I was just informing some of the people here about the negitive effects of using google web accelerator.

By the way I am by no means anti-google or whatever I just thought some people may find that interesting.
